I need to write a rhetorical analysis of a TED Talk and I honestly don’t know what I’m doing. I picked Brené Brown’s talk on vulnerability, which I love, but I have no idea how to write about it academically. Am I supposed to count how many times she says “connection” or something?

Haha, not quite — but you’re on the right track! You’re looking for specific rhetorical tools the speaker uses to make their message resonate. It could be a story, a metaphor, repetition, or even humor. I used this article to help guide my breakdown: rhetorical devices. It shows you how to spot those techniques and explain their purpose, which is exactly what most professors want in these essays.

Totally. Once I realized it’s less about what is being said and more about how, it all clicked. I did mine on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and found tons of pathos and subtle repetition that I hadn’t noticed before. It made writing the paper way more interesting too — kind of like cracking a code.
