I cant speak from personal experience yet, as im still to actually own a NEC system (activly looking), but if you enjoy shooters its definetly worth it, it has a ton of good well recieved shooters on it. It also has some j-rpg or zelda-style adventure games people like to rave about. Bonk seems popular as well. Id pick one up at a fair price if i were you. Just make sure you either get it region modded, or get an adapter so you can play japanese cards on it.

The general opinion is to just buy a Japanese Turbo Duo, because the North American hardware and games are expensive. The NEC PC Engine was more popular than the 8-bit Famicom (NES) in Japan for several years, and its CD add-on is the only really successful console add-on ever. The Sega CD and Jaguar CD were pretty much failures, but the PC Engine’s CD was wildly popular. The NES was slow to come to North America, and during the height of its popularity in America, the PC Engine was huge in Japan. Then when it was released as the Turbografx 16 domestically, only a few people actually owned one, it seems. I knew only two guys in high school who owned one.
Japanese HuCard games are easy to come by, as are the CD-ROM games. There were several versions of this system made, with different CD driver cards released (CD-ROM, Super CD-ROM, Arcade, etc). Your best bet is to get a Japanese Duo, Duo-R (sleek white) or the Duo-RX (just like the R, but has more buttons on the controller). The Duo is an all-in-one design, so you don’t need to get the CD driver cards since the built-in OS can handle them all (except for the Arcade CD games, but don’t worry about those since they are few).

Actually you shouldnt consider a japanese DUO at all, unless you know for a fact it has had all caps replaced. The DUO is notorious for having cap failures. Go with the DUO-R or RX only to be on the safe side. The DUO and the DUO-R/RX are two different machines.
Keep a look out for doujindance on ebay. He sells refurbished, region and rgb (and sometimes s-video) modded units at a fair up-price compared to ordinary units on ebay. you pay $30-60 more for a unit with a new laser, resoldered I/O’s and the region and video mods, not to mention he cleans off all the yellowing really well from what ive seen so far. Im saving up for one of those, hopefully before the end of the year.

I think you’d be safe if you look out for doujindance’s offerings on ebay. Especially when he posts the ones with s-video mods.. he sells them for around $260 + shipping, but to be honest, he puts a lot of care into both cleaning off the yellowing, and refurbishing and replacing components to make sure it will run well for years to come. Just search for “pc engine rgb” and his stuff will show if he has anything listed. then just look for the ones with s-video too, if you want something better than composite, and have no means of displaying the rgb signals.. Or find a converter or something.

Good point. Last year I had my friend who graduated from DeVry with an EET to replace the capacitors in my Duo because the internal game save memory had stopped working. It works fine now, though. I did know that the R systems were different than the original Duo, but I thought that the hardware was scaled down and perhaps not as sturdy. Good to know.
Also, I forgot to point out that while the game cards are not region compatible, the CD games are region-free, unlike the Sega CD. So, you can buy the English language version of Ys Books I and II or Vasteel to play on your Japanese Duo, if you so desired.

Yeah you are correct. The cd-media is region free, i was talking about the cards. Perhaps i shouldve clarified better.

I just actually placed an order for a core grafx system and some loose games and a 6 button controller, via Rakuten in japan.. Unless they wanna charge me a ridiculous amount in shipping ill proceed once i get the shipping estimation. it ended up on the cheaper side, especially compared to ebay, so even if it sets back the Duo-r a while, i can enjoy some of the loose carts i already have, and try out some accesories ive gotten, like the hori arcade stick. I will still get that duo-r eventually, and can sell this to recover the money by then.

Its like a hub for shops, never used it before. Awaiting shipping estimation from the actual shop. Unless its something expensive that i didnt estimate through their general shipping cost guide, ill pay the shop when i get it. See how things goes. Sadly, paypal is not available.

I had a Turbografx 16 back in the day. There were several fun games for it but mostly shooters as others have said. It held on for alot longer than I thought it would have. The only real stand out games that come to mind are the Bonk games, Legendary Axe, & Keith Courage. I know there are more but those are the only ones that come to mind at the top of my head.
Not a fanboy, just a gamer...every system has its gems!!

The japanese shop finally sent a shipping qoute the other day, and after my confirmation, they finally charged me for the system and games. I will soon finally own a PC-E system, if not yet the one i really prefer. The system ill be owning untill i can afford to upgrade to the DUO-R, is the Core Grafx. So ill at least get composite out of it without mods.
