I found an interesting Yahoo article here describing today’s video game environment. Discuss.

I think it is wildly off the mark.  Yahoo typically likes to prop up the mobileGames Market which I do not believe can replace console gaming.

That said, if this industry does finally go under due to their general incompetence and reliance on a diminishing demographic then I think that mobilegaming will get the credit for the collapse.

Also GTA will not sell mor ethan COD.  I wil be shocked if it does.  The expectation is 11 million.

Impressive, but nowhere near the cultural games like COD and Mario Bros.

Looking at the sales of the last generation and handhelds, I don’t think it’s dying.  You could say it’s evolving.  I think many casual gamers will forgo buying new consoles and just play the little games on their phones.  The industry is changing, but I wouldn’t say it’s dying.

Currently looking for the following SNES games:

Chrono Trigger

EarthBound

Final Fantasy II (Final Fantasy IV)

Secret of Mana

Illusion of Gaia

Super Castlevania IV

Super Mario RPG

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

 Zombies Ate My Neighbors

TMNT IV

Contra III

I agree, I don’t think that it is dying at all, there’s always going to be a drought and there’s always going to be a game that everyone looks forward to playing. I think that games are too integrated to fail at this point. Look how commercial and successful call of duty is for instance.

The industry is at an interesting crossroads where a new Triple A game has to pretty much sell several million copies just to turn a profit.  Publishers have naturally become very risk averse. At the same time, games are getting cheaper and cheaper and often drop in price within a month or two of release.

On the other hand, digital distribution has made it so that just about anyone can get a game out there on Steam, XBox Live, iTunes, etc.

I don’t think the industry is going anywhere, but I also don’t think the current model will go on much longer.

Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown

I personally hope the games do not go down the road of direct download. if physical copies get abandoned then I definitely will not purchase any next generation system.

Human population is increasing, the game industry is changing/evolving/degenerating whatever you want to use to describe it but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if all physical copies are discontinued within the next 10 years to compensate for the influx of the digital, on-demand generation. The question of time, space, waste management/environment, DLC and above all continual corporate profit should put paid to any notion of physical copies in the future. I don’t think the industry is dying, it’s just changing into something that I don’t like. The best thing that could happen is perhaps another crash….

The industry is arguably flirting with another crash.  I personally don’t think there will be an outright crash, though I think a shift to digital distribution is inevitable.

It’ll probably be the generation after Xbox 720 / Wii-U / PS4 where things are 100% digital though.

I’m of the opinion that Steam, for the most part, got digital right.  Very nice interface and games can be had for quite cheap during the sales (and reasonable prices throughout the rest of the year).  If the SteamBox comes to fruition, it may be my (modern) console of choice going forward.

All that being said, I despise games that need a constant internet connection to work.

yes, I shouldn’t have to pay for Internet just to play my system or games.

Plus we all suffer temporary internet outages from time to time.  Videogames are usually the best way to pass the time during said outages.

Yes. Now it’s dying.

And good riddance! They are going to get everything they deserve.

I don’t think it’s dying at all but it is definitely going through some growing pains right now and it will evolve. Into what? I dunno but after watching Microsoft’s XBOX One reveal yesterday I can say that I think they are going down the wrong path and if they think that gamers are going to blindly follow them, they will be in for a rude awakening.

Microsoft have now put me off this new gen of consoles. Imposing some bulls*** rules and regulations only to do a complete U-turn once they finally get it through their arrogant, empty heads that customers will not stand for it. Evidently they now have no faith even in their own marketing and development any more. So what we are left with is a slightly updated 360 that costs a lot more. The only bonus I can find is that software (on discs) has been announced will be region-free, though Id wait because they’re liable to change that too.

I think the industry is due not to die but have even more companies collapse under the strain of unnecessarily huge budgets and expectations. If your game has to sell 5 million copies to break even there is something wrong with the picture.

Also I can’t believe that people who were so outraged over the initial reveal of the XBox One are willing to forgive them after pulling the 180 on it. If you don’t think MS will try this crap next-gen you are kidding yourself.

Well to their credit, they DID go back on that, but the plan has poisoned the well.

That said, The Game industries decline is not unusual. EVERYTHING is down! Why should gaming be any different? To expect gaming to be ascendant when even FOOD!! is down is ludicrous.
