I’ve been wanting to make this thread for a while now, so here it is. Just post your reviews of any non-Super NES games. Length doesn’t matter.

Alright. A few months ago, I decided to go to the HD gaming land to see what I’ve been missing out on all these years (I pretty much stuck with the Wii for years). I did play quite a few 360/PS3 games before such as MK9 & the COD series every now & then though.

Saints Row 1 – I have mixed feelings toward this game. On one hand, it does what a clone of a series should do & improve some things over the original (GTA). In this case, you still keep all of your weapons even if you get busted or killed & the story pacing is generally better. Not only that, but unlike San Andreas, you can hold health-restoring items for later consumption. Also, character customization in this game has many more options than in GTA: San Andreas.

On the other hand, the game introduces some flaws of its own such as most stores being closed at night & the lack of an aiming system (you can’t lock on to enemies unlike in San Andreas). The physics can also be a little annoying from time to time. If you get hit by a car, you’ll end up flopping around like a fish & it takes quite a while to get back up on your feet. Honestly, I’m not sure how well this game holds up today since I’ve never played the later Saints Row games aside from a tiny part of SR2.

Gears of War – I’ve only played the campaign mode so I won’t be talking about the multiplayer mode in this game at all. Anyways, the game is pretty good, but it kinda ends abruptly. The cover system in this game feels really fun to use. For a game that utilizes mainly browns, grays, & other dull, earthly colors, the developers manage to do a good job creating a war-torn, depressing landscape. I haven’t played any other 7th gen 3rd person shooters other than this Vanquish, & Gears 2 so I’m not entirely sure how well the gameplay mechanics hold up compared to the other games of the genre, but on their own, they seem pretty fine. I haven’t tried the co-op mode yet though. The only part of the game that I didn’t like was the driving section in which you had to alternate between driving & firing.

Vanquish – Probably one of the few HD games that I’ve really liked. The game feels so much more fluid than in Gears of War. You can slide around the map, allowing you to dodge enemy fire more easily, get to another place faster, or flank an enemy’s position. The melee combat feels really satisfying as you punch down enemies. However, after you perform either maneuver, you have to wait a little while before you can use them again. I really like the hectic feel of the levels as they really make you feel like you’re in an actual war with many troops on both sides firing at each other & all the bullets whizzing by. There’s just one major problem though:

There’s no multiplayer. AT ALL. How can you have a 2010 3rd-person shooter without multiplayer of any sort?

Sonic Generations – I have mixed feelings about this game. On one hand, it feels like a fun thrill ride & many of the levels from the older games in the series seem to have been given a breath of fresh air. A lot of the levels are simply beautiful to look at, especially the ones from the older games & a lot of the remixes do the original music justice.

On the other hand, there’s a few flaws that really kept this game from being better. Every time Classic or Modern Sonic gets hit, it takes a while to get back up. Modern Sonic doesn’t seem to control very well at all except in the 2D portions. Last, but not least, it sucks that there’s only 9 zones in this game. With it being an anniversary game for Sonic, I kinda expected at least a few more. There’s like, 4 bosses in the game, one of which you can only fight once you get all 7 chaos emeralds.

Blazblue: Continuum Shift – I played a bit of this game before. It’s pretty much a spiritual successor to the Guilty Gear series. Like in GG, it pretty much centers around combos & intricate gameplay mechanics. Also similar to GG, some characters don’t just have their own special moves, but also have their own unique gameplay mechanics. For example, Bang Shishigami has a limited number of nails that are needed for some special moves. Once they are all used up, Bang cannot perform those moves anymore until the round or match ends. Carl Clover has an automaton that assists him in battle. The automaton can move & attack, but unless commanded to do something, it’ll be hunched over & won’t do anything. All characters each have a finishing move called an “Astral Heat” that they can only do if they have their super gauge filled up all the way & their opponent has low health; they’re pretty hard to perform, but it’s satisfying to succesfully pull one off as they look so impressive.

The game itself looks BEAUTIFUL in a HD display & the soundtrack is kick ass. This is a great 2D fighter overall, but there’s just one problem…

THE FUCKING DLC! It’s $7 each to get a DLC character (they are Makoto Nanaya, Valkenhayn, & Platinum the Trinity) for a total of $21! Oh yeah, there’s also DLC of alternate colors that you have to pay for. Well, at least there’s a later edition of the game that includes the DLC characters & maybe the alt. colors. (Continuum Shift Extend).

He wrote a lengthy review of “Final Fantasy XIII”, but it’s gone for some reason.

You have GOT to be shitting me………………

Note to all writers , THIS is why you do EVERYTHING you write in Word or Wordpad first, and then save it.

I will “re-write” it (thats the trouble with this kind of thing; You spend so much time tooling it that you cannot replicate it)

But that’s not going to happen today. Damn………………….

Part 2 of Mark’s adventures in HD gaming land!:

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance – It’s pretty much a spinoff of the MGS series that puts a bigger focus on combat, but still has plenty of parts that encourage the use of stealth. It’s pretty much a DMC-type beat em’ up that focuses on combos. From what I’ve played so far, the story somewhat takes a backseat compared to the other games in the series, but the cutscenes combined would still take about 2-3 hours to go through.

The combat is pretty entertaining, but one thing that really brings it down is that blocking is a little too complicated. Instead of just pressing a button to do so, you have to do a light attack & then press the control stick in the direction of the attack. You’ll have to constantly input this motion for each enemy attack. I’m not sure why the developers couldn’t just make it so that you can block by pressing a button as opposed to all this.

I will say that the DLC (as usual) is BULLSHIT. First off, a lot of the armors (if not all) are paid DLC at $2 each and 1 at $3, totaling $11 (there’s 5 DLC armors). Then there’s the downloadable VR missions, which happen to be EXCLUSIVE DLC to the PS3, which I can’t even get anyways since I only have access to a 360 (technically my brother’s, but still.) Last, but not least, there’s DLC for Jetstream Sam & Bladewolf in which you can play as both of them in their own exclusive missions. Jetstream Sam costs about $10 & Bladewolf costs about $7.

Total cost for all DLC is about $31. Honestly, you’re better off spending that same amount of money on something else. Hell, you can get the MGS HD Collection for probably the same amount. In fact, there’s probably DLC for other games that has more bang for your buck than the DLC for this game.

Gears of War 2 & 3 – These 2 games manage to be just as fun as the first one. I’m not sure if this was in the 1st game, but I really hate how if you take too much damage, your character will fall down & have to be revived, which is annoying if your teammates are distracted by other stuff going on. Introduced in the 2nd game are chainsaw duels, which will start if both opponents go at each other with their chainsaw lancers revving up. Once begun, you must press B rapidly to overpower your opponent & kill him with your chainsaw. These duels are pretty fun, but can get annoying if a lot of enemies have chainsaw lancers.

Introduced in the 3rd game are ride armors. They can take a lot of damage before they are destroyed & there’s 2 kinds. The Loader Ride Armor is mainly used for carrying heavy items, but you can use its right arm to punch enemies if you’re not carrying anything. The Silverback Ride Armor uses a turret as well as a rocket launcher that’s very powerful & can kill enemies quickly. It can also use a stomp attack for enemies that are close enough. It can even deploy shields for allies close enough.

Like the 1st game, I’ve only played the campaign modes for 2 & 3 so I don’t know how good the multiplayer is. I heard there’s DLC for the 3rd game’s campaign mode called Raam’s Shadow, but at $15, I can’t help but feel that it’s going to be a rip-off. Please tell me that there’s a version for each game that has all the DLC included.
