Make it heard all you want. layoffs isnt exclusive to the gaming industry and you are ignorant to believe so. Its part of your beloved capitalism and its ever growing need and greed for corporate profits, nothing else. Those “facts” you mention are manufactured to fool people into thinking the layoffs are necessary, and not revolt against corporate greed on a meaningful scale. Just wait though, that revolt is growing and is coming.

Yes, disinterest is the true enemy, but not in gaming. Mostly in US politics and policies that affect the whole world due to US being the only superpower at the moment, collaborating with China on a business-level, and being in their pocket financially. The disinterest as an enemy you speak of, is why US now fulfill the 10 steps to become a dictatorship, and that trickles down into every level and type of living. That disinterest is spawned with manufactured news, facts and such, designed to created that disinterest. People talk of a global economical recession, yet the banks have never made larger profits than today. You of all people should be able to look THOSE facts up. This has nothing to do with people being annoyed with updates or newer consoles being computers, it has to do with manipulation from the highest level.

Did you know that with a “new” law, if Obama simply says you are a terrorist, without anything to back that up, you ARE a terrorist, by law? The ignorance of, and disinterest to fight the taking away of liberties and democracy in the US is what affects everything, especially corporate greed, since that is what US and US politics thrives on, especially since Reagan.

If we keep on this path, we wont be around to BE retro gamers at all.

Check out this documentary, you may not see the connection to gaming, but this actually affects every way of life in the US (including gaming), and outside, considering the pull US has across the world. You will hopefully understand what im talking about, even if you disagree, which hopefully you wont. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1294790/

Some people think America is headed for another Civil War.  Most people don’t think it will happen, but most people don’t foresee the fall of the empires they live in.  I’m not so sure myself.

Currently looking for the following SNES games:

Chrono Trigger

EarthBound

Final Fantasy II (Final Fantasy IV)

Secret of Mana

Illusion of Gaia

Super Castlevania IV

Super Mario RPG

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

 Zombies Ate My Neighbors

TMNT IV

Contra III

I know that the UK is a cesspool of decadence, debauchery and degenerates. It’s leaders and people in authority are corrupt beyond belief and have a sponge for a backbone when it comes to negotiating anything with Europe, US, China, India etc.

How the once mighty have fallen cry

The state of gaming and everything else is in one way or another connected to corporate greed. Its part of the capitalist system, and the empires who needs it to survive. That is why we see layoffs and companies going under. It has very little to do with anything else.

fascinating discussion that has stemmed from this!

Not that I never said explicitly that ONLY gaming is having these issues.  That would be untrue.  Every American industry is stagnant or down except for Oil and Gas which is booming.  My point was to illustrate that the macro-economic trends that are plunging the economy downward do not favor gaming.  Nobody really needs games.  There are much cheaper alternatives in economic bad times, so they are one of the worst affected.

On a Geopolitical front, China could have us by the balls, but this economy has affected them worse than us.  If they were to cash in their chits than their economy would be destroyed alongside ours.  It’s so dangerous it is safe.  That is why they do not cash it.  China also has major problems such as a surging population connected to a shrinking Landmass.  Most of China is desert and tundra, and the only areas that support mass-habitation are the rivers and oceanfronts.  China is also currently being undercut by countries that are now cheaper than China in labor costs.  this has resulted in millions of migrant young men going place to place just to find work.  So China does not have the means to capitalize.

Russia and Saudi Arabia have had massive success in Using Oil to grow a new middle and upper class, but it is so fragile.  The United states will eventually emulate them to avoid the economic turmoil, and begin tapping our own reserves.  It will happen regardless of politics and environmentalists because we really have no choice.  Who will be the losers of the great oil boom? Saudi Arabia and Russia. Since production of oil is up, they must lower their production or risk prices plummeting. And it is not going to be easy to bring fracking to places like Saudi Arabia or Russia. Russia is so frozen. And fracking takes a ton of water and infrastructure which I doubt Saudi Arabia can emulate.

Then you have Puget Sound, which is showing us the way to produce energy free of oil and Natural Gas.  I expect the new model to be to utilize renewable resources at home, and import Natural Gas and Oil to the rest of the world.

We’ll see if I am right in 30 years or so.  This is just a prediction and things can change so fast.

Union companies pioneer layoffs in Sweden, even before the risk capitalists etc demand it. Dont kid yourself that they dont do that in the US also. The Unions is toothless because people dont participate in that work themselves. they expect someone else to do it. The disinterest you mentioned earlier. They also have the tendency to become friends with the enemy, the union leaders, and seduced by their friend’s lifestyles. Many so called “red block” politicians and union heads go to work for the private sector as board members, private consultants etc once their political career is over.

Hell, even the new leader of the Socialdemocrats in Sweden, Stefan Löfvén was head of the metal and industrial union in sweden, and he invited lowered workhours, lowered pay and layoffs back in 2008, even before the “market” demanded it. There are a few unions who still fight back, but they are few and not powerful enough to affect the centralized union organisation in sweden, LO. (basically all workers unions are part of LO). Löfvén is so far right even the right wing parties in sweden are surprised.

So yeah, companies that are in unions lay off for profit just like any other. Volvo, Saab, Ericsson, some of the biggest companies active in sweden does this all the time. it is ALWAYS true, because thats the fundamental truth of capitalism, which both your and my country is sworn to. Profitability above anything else. Some even go so far as to say without the alure of profits, progress would never be made. Then i ask people do define progress, and they thing it means success, economical success.. Another documentary to watch would then be Surviving Progress: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1462014/. Because its killing us off, along with the planet as a whole.

And by the way, this is not off topic at all. Its monumentally about profit, and profit is the main reason behind Digital releases, vs Physical. Look at it from a bigger perspective and you’ll see that too.

Part of the reason why Unions may appear toothless is the advent of labor laws, which make mandatory the many of the things that Unions have been fighting for.  It makes the Union seem unnecessary and many workers wish we could go Non-Union because it appears that all they are accomplishing is taking their money every week.

You do not feel that way if you fear for your job(Ex:  Layoffs.)  A fearful employee is a less-productive employee.  You speak of an economy in which workers are an easily replaceable commodity, yet I have experienced the opposite.  It takes much money and time to train an employee to do the job right and well. I am not saying that all companies are like this, as far too many are not.  But my opinion is that most companies are after the short-term, since they are beholden to shareholders who often ARE short-term investors.

Perhaps the investor model should be looked at?

I had this whole response typed out and i was about to press “Submit Reply”, but i just erased it all because you are from a completely different planet. This is not even a difference in opinion anymore. You just have no idea about these things, how they actually work outside a business school. Im done, forever.

It’s still civil!  You should see our old debates!  And Grimm is correct that this is a n Ideological brick wall.  It is very much like putting a christian and an Athiest in a room to debate religion.

What it does and what I hope everyone gets from this exchange is a perspective that you may not already have.  Both of these perspectives are rather deeper than your average debate on a gaming forum goes!

Looking forward to some Roundtable guy’s. Although I’m definitely not as up on my economics as you folks, the older I get the more I see Communism as a viable option. I’m also becoming more right-wing. Strange.. but these are disturbing times in GB.

Difficult to have a conversation with yourself…..

Do you perhaps have any input as to what you have read?  Questions, comments, ect?

I would love to keep this going, but at the moment there is nothing to say….
