I haven’t yet. It’s getting rave reviews. If it’s on sale on Black Friday, I’ll pick it up then.

The new Smash Brothers will sell but only to the Nintendo audience. This is not a game that is going to make people buy the Wii U. I think the  Carzy Nintendo Fan already has a Wii U by now. Also being available on the much more lucrative 3DS market is really going to take the wind out of SmashU’s sales as well.

I bought Melee (which I liked) and Brawl (which I barely played). I’m going skip this Smash Brothers. To those who buy it and play it forever, wonderful. But to someone like me, this game gets old after a couple of hours. Although, Melee kept my interest more somehow.

Someone need to tell Nintendo that they are watering down the game with all these garbage characters. Who the fuck was demanding Wii Fit Trainer and Animal Crossing Guy?!? DOES ANYONE LIKE FUCKING BOWSER JR?!?!???What a garbage character… Why all these garbage characters instead of focusing on interesting locales and weapons?

I don’t care for the Mii fighters in Smash. Throwing in Miis into Smash is like throwing in the 1960s Batman into a modern Batman game (or into M.A.S.H.). It’s absurd and breaks the cohesion. Smash does have universe cohesion in that it is Nintendo fictional escapism. We really need an option to disable Miis when playing.

And as for amiibos…………..

I already DESPISE these things! What does Amiibo have to do with being inclusive to ages 5-95? Nintendo is really shitting up their franchises by forcing these ‘new business models’. Game companies made the same mistake last generation when they went to HD. Did Nintendo learn from it? No. They just think they are so brilliant, so smart, that only they can do it correctly.

2d Mario – Messed up because they want to introduce DLC.

Starfox – Messed up because it is Episodic Based.

Wii Sports Wii U – Messed up because it is digital and split into buying each sport separately or subscription. Really? Subscription for Wii Sports!!!??????

Smash – Messed up with Amiibos.

Amiibos need to die in fire. Adults are not going to be buying little figurines. This is TOTALLY ANTI-WII mentality going on with it.

1 – Holy s**t it’s Mongunzoo! Welcome back!

2 – I have bought the new Smash Bros game last weekend. I had not really played any other Smash game since the first one (mostly because I basically skipped the GC and the Wii systems). The game is fun. It offers quite a lot of variety (SOOOOO many game modes) to keep things fresh a bit longer.

I agree that some characters aren’t really necessary to the game. Although some new ones are quite fun to play with (I’m thinking about Duck Hunt)!

As for the Mii fighters, I don’t believe you can use them online. Custom characters seem to be limited to local matches. Same goes with amiibos.. I don’t think they make any difference when playing online. I know I will surely not buy any of these toys. I hated them ever since I heard about them. The only reason why I would buy one is to keep it sealed and sell it in 20 years.. but then again I don’t think I will do this.

I won’t lie, I bought my Wii U partly because I wanted to play the upcoming Smash game and DKC: Tropical Freeze (which turned out to be worse than DKC Returns in my opinion). I will also add that I was a bit dissapointed when I played Smash. This is probably due to the fact that this game has been over hyped for the past 2 years or so.

Actually, the only Wii U game that really surprised me was Mario Kart 8. I had not played any version after the N64 one and man, it’s so good! That being said, Smash isn’t a BAD game, it’s simply not as special or original as I thought it would be. In the end, it’s a good Smash game, I would even say it’s a pretty damn good one.. But that’s about it.

PS: What about the 8-player matches you ask? Extremely chaotic! This isn’t Bomberman, what were they thinking !

Welcome back Mong!  As usual, I disagree with a lot of what you had to say.

I think that Smash Wii U will end up becoming a moderate system seller.  There’s been around 8 – 9 million Wii Us sold so far.  It’s fair to assume that a good chunk of those consoles belong to Nintendo diehards, but some must be children, casual fans, etc.  Let’s estimate that 6 million Wii Us belong to hardcore Nintendo fans.  When looking at the sales of past Smash Bros (7 million for Melee, 8 million for brawl) and the hype surrounding Smash Wii U, it’s not too much of a stretch to assume that Smash will end up selling a couple million Wii Us.  Not bad, but not enough to get Nintendo back to where they need to be.

I’ll give you that Miis are kinda lame as characters, but they don’t at all break the universe cohesion.  Miis have always been video game characters, have become iconic to Nintendo and don’t at all seem out of place in a Smash game.  It’s also a big stretch to argue that the Smash universe has “cohesion”.  The first N64 game kinda sorta did, but ever since then they’ve just been adding more and more random crap to things.  It really doesn’t make much sense and it doesn’t have to.  Fighting games don’t really need cohesion to be great (see Marvel vs. Capcom or SoulCalibur’s guest characters for proof of this).

Speaking of Marvel vs. Cacpom, that series has also proved that not all characters in a fighting game need to be strong for it to be a great game.  It also proved that the more characters the better in these “party” style fighters.

As for Amiibos, I think they’re a brilliant idea.  Yes, adults won’t be buying figurines (for themselves anyways), but they’re not for adults; they’re for kids.  Skylanders has already proven there’s a huge market for toys that interact with video games.  Nintendo would be fools to not go after this, considering that their stable of characters is the strongest in the industry, bar none.  If kids want to collect Spyro and some random monsters, you can bet they’ll be interested in collecting Mario and Pikachu.  To Nintendo’s credit, they didn’t make Amiibos central to the game, they’re essentially optional (which may hurt sales).  Still, I expect they’ll sell boat loads.

On topic: I haven’t tried Smash Wii U myself, since I don’t have a Wii U yet (I just recently got a 2DS, so I’m a little behind on the latest gen).  For what it’s worth though, Smash and Mario Kart 8 are making it VERY tempting for me to pick one up.

I bought Mario Kart 8 for 35 bucks and Super Smash Bros for $38 in the madness that is Black Friday. If anyone reading this has a Wii U and Smash Bros, I challenge you to a match!

Got it from Best Buy. The deal was to purchase one game for full price and the 2nd game would be 40% off plus an additional 20% off for Rewards customers. So I got Bayonetta 2 and Smash Bros. for a total of $76.

So it was like getting each game for $38 each.

Apparently some analysts think Nintendo will make $1 billion off of US Amiibo sales.  Seems pretty suspect to me.

Assuming Nintendo makes $10 off of each Amiibo (an extremely generous assumption), they’d have to sell 100 million Amiibos to make $1 billion.  Considering they haven’t even sold 10 million Wii U’s yet (worldwide), they’re basically assuming that every Wii U owner will buy more than 10 Amiibos.  Time will tell, though I think this is a big reach.

Did you end up picking up any Amiibos Masa?

10 amiibos per Wii U owner does seem out of proportions. If Nintendo sold twice or thrice as many Wii U systems during its lifespan then maybe they could make close to a billion dollars over the years. Maybe. I’m not sure which new games will drive Wii U systems sales up in the future. The new Zelda perhaps?

Looking back, I remember what I was thinking when I decided to get a Wii U. I wanted to play the new Donkey Kong Country game, which did not turn out as good as I expected it to be. I was unsure about Mario Kart 8, but it turned out much better than I thought. Still, I haven’t touched the game in months now. And then, I was really looking forward to the new Smash Bros. games… And I was a bit dissapointed. In fact, I played it 1 weekend so far, I thought ”meh..” and I went and purchased a Street Fighter game for my PS2.

The only games I’m looking forward to now are the new Zelda and probably the new Xenoblade. Other than that, I don’t know. It seems like my Wii U enthusiasm as vanished a bit because the games I was really looking forward to turned out to be worse than expected.

Ever since I bought Smash Bros. I’ve been thinking of trading in my system and get a PS4 instead. But then again, all the PS4 games I want to play are also out on the PS3 or will be (except for Uncharted 4, apparently). In the end, it is probably wiser to do as Mongunzoo said and skip a generation then come back to it once all the good games are already out.

Am I the only one feeling this way about the Wii U nowadays?

No, I didn’t get any. I don’t think they will make 1 billion in sales, but I think they will sell more than you expect. My sister wants to buy a few because they look cute. She isn’t aware of their functionality and she doesn’t even have a Wii U. Point is they will also sell to people who don’t even have a Wii U; to collectors and people who think the figures look cute.

No, I still feel enthusiastic about my Wii U although I haven’t been playing it much due to time. What’s wrong with Donkey Kong? And what are your issues with Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8?

My sticking point with the Wii U is that they have to get the online right. if I’m able to play my favorite Wii U games with people all over the world, this will be a huge incentive for me to play it more.

I was highly disappointed that I couldn’t play Super Mario 3D World online with others.

It’s not that I dislike the games completly, it is that I had too high expectation from them and they did not quite deliver what I was looking for. It is hard for me to pin point exactly what bugs me.

I was looking for a Super Nintendo-like feel when I bought the Wii U. I’m not really getting it. If I want to play some classic Nintendo franchises (Mario, DK, etc.), I will have a much better time playing the games on my SNES than I would have playing games that are inspired by them. I thought the Wii U would be a perfect balance of Retro and New.. and yes, it is a mix of both. But infact, when I want to play something retro, I’ll play the retro stuff. And when I want to play some new stuff, well I don’t necessarily want to play some Nintendo stuff. That is one problem, the Wii U is ALMOST exclusively Nintendo games. Sure, the new Nintendo games are fun but they don’t feel like the retro ones yet they are very similar to them in some ways.

It is like I’m realising that the Wii U is not quite what I had in mind when getting it. I’m starting to think I’d be better with my retro consoles + a PS4 than with a Wii U. The Wii U does feel old school and innovative at times but does not seem to excel at neither of these 2 things.

My opinion of the Wii U is quite changing so I might think otherwise in a week. Oh well..

I think the Wii U is a lot more like the Gamecube than the SNES.  Lots of great first party titles to look forward to, but not much third party support and a pretty small library overall.

Antarch,

The best way to get that Super Nintendo feel is with the Super Nintendo! I don’t think any modern system is going to give you a similar playing experience to the Super Nintendo. Probably the closest thing is the regular Wii.

Did you see the list of unreviewed Super Nintendo games? There’s still a ton of SNES games to play out there. And let’s not forget the Super Famicom either.

So I have played this one and I have to say, Its pretty fucking good. The Character roster is good (Duck Hunt dog FTW) and the mechanics remind me much more of Melee. Still mad about the Ice climbers, but you cannot have everything.

Glad to see the amiibo’s are not as pervasive as I thought they would be, and Nintendo seems to be taking an overall unintrusive approach to them. This may work out pretty well after all.

I was very impressed with the game too.  My bro and I had a lot of fun teaming up online.  I agree that the roster is great.  My favourite part is that Sonic is so good in the game.  My inner SEGA fan gets a strange thrill from beating up Nintendo’s best with the blue blur.

I’m seriously considering getting a Wii U this year.  Of all the next gen consoles, it’s got the most games I’d actually want to play (despite having an anemic library).

On the 3DS front, does anyone here play Smash on that?  I’d love to play against someone from SNES Hub sometime.

I got a few 3DS games, but still no 3DS yet! It’s definitely in my future.

Rush, do you have Ultra Street Fighter IV? Do you still play Dragon’s Crown? I’d play with you in one of those on weekends.
