Graphics, Music, Gameplay, or Story? Why?

GAME PLAY.

Because nothing else matters if the game play is repetitive, boring, or ill-conceived.

A good story helps, but really I like to emphasize that if the gameplay is good, the most we NEED is an excuse-plot.  If I want a GOOD story I will read a book or watch a movie because they do it much better.

Graphics like story are nice to have, but since I have been gaming in the 16-bit for YEARS I have come to the conclusion that they are bells and whistles.  Nothing more.

Sound design is second-most to me because it can put you in the mood or set the scene for you.  Catchy music is important if you are going to be returning to a game over and over again.

I want a combination.  I want good gameplay to start off.  Nothing can save a game with bad gameplay.  Then, I want good music to set the tone.  The next two, story and graphics, are on a game-to-game basis.  If I’m playing an RPG or a Zelda game, I want a good story that doesn’t get in the way of gameplay, but instead moves it along.  I don’t need a story to enjoy Frogger or Pac-Man.  The graphics depend on the console.  I don’t want an SNES game to look like an NES game.

Currently looking for the following SNES games:

Chrono Trigger

EarthBound

Final Fantasy II (Final Fantasy IV)

Secret of Mana

Illusion of Gaia

Super Castlevania IV

Super Mario RPG

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

 Zombies Ate My Neighbors

TMNT IV

Contra III

that was my initial thought too, but my favorite game of all time has to be earthbound. And in that game the game plays definitely not the primal focus it more is on the atmosphere music and graphic style and humor.

that being said if a game can draw me in like that, really the gameplay doesn’t matter. however, gameplay is definitely my number 1 in almost every other case and that has only been the exception in earthbound.

you would think that, but go deeper into Earthbound’s Gameplay and you will find that it is leaps and bounds ahead of the RPG norm.

-insta-Win

-rolling Healthbar

-Sneak Attacks

-No Random Encounters

All of these features made EB an enjoyable PLAY right off the bat.  The Atmosphere was just Icing n the cake.

I suppose, but really was very simplistic in the way that it was executed. I hear a lot of people compared to Dragon Quest and how their system was. I can’t really comment for that but it was very basic in turned base game play. yes there was rolling health bars and such, but it still was a very simple game to play.

Yes, it really does have a Dragon Quest vibe going on, doesn’t it?laugh

And Dragon Quest is a franchise that has been going strong for years.  Aside from the fifth one you cannot really say people play Dragon Quest for the story or atmosphere.  I think that the DQ formula combined with the tweaks listed above really made this game a joy to play.

If I am forcing myself to play something for the story or atmosphere, I’ll usually begin to feel it regardless of how strong a game is in those aspects.  I never felt that in Earthbound.  Did you?

Absolutely! Bad gameplay is like a pizza with no cheese—just plain wrong 🍕😂. Music sets the mood, and story should enhance, not interrupt. And yeah, SNES games should not look like NES ones—unless it’s some “retro aesthetic” excuse! If you ever need smooth online play without lag ruining your experience, gaming dedicated servers from HostNoc can keep things running like a dream.
