OfflineIn our discussion on the lack of a new F-Zero game, Mong and I suggested that Nintendo would do well to partner with third party developers to create new games in some of their more neglected series, since the Wii U desperately needs content and Nintendo lacks the resources to make games for all of their properties fast enough.
This got me thinking; which series should Nintendo outsource and to who?
My picks are:
F-Zero – Sega – This one is a no brainer. Sega made a GREAT F-Zero game for the arcade and the cube. Why not give them a crack at a Wii-U version with HD graphics, a track editor and online play?
Star Fox – Treasure – Treasure’s made great rail shooters before (Sin & Punishment) and are experts on the action genre in general. Plus their games are all very weird and let’s face it, so is the Star Fox universe. I’d be very excited to play Treasure’s take on Star Fox; perhaps with some online and offline co-op play!
Pilotwings (Wii U) – Rockstar – This one is a bet of a stretch, but Rockstar are kings at open world, sandbox games, and the Pilotwings series have had some open world elements since Pilotwings 64. I’m confident that Rockstar could make a massive world to fly around in, complete with several different vehicles and even neat side objectives (using a helicopter to rescue people for example). This would have the added bonus of Nintendo and Rockstar establishing a working relationship, hopefully leading to more Rockstar games on Nintendo consoles in the future.
Nintendo Puzzle Collection – Literally any competent developer – This one also feels like a no-brainer. Package Tetris, Dr. Mario, Tetris Attack, Picross and a few of Nintendo’s B-list puzzle games (Wario’s Woods, Yoshi’s Cookie) onto a single disc. Give the game a slick, simple, HD look and include online play and leader boards. Release the game at a budget price (say $30) and market it. Who wouldn’t want this?
What franchises do you think Nintendo should outsource and to who?

OfflineYou read my mind on those first two!! With Retro developing DKC, those two games could become the triumvirate of awesomeness!
Interesting thought on RockStar doing PW. It’s not like a Nintendo/ Rockstar teamup is without precedent, as they worked with Nintendo for years as DMA Designs. That could be really good.
Love the puzzle idea. Bottom line not every game has to be the same price, and it used to be that they weren’t.Bring back price disparity.
I’m going to go rack my brain and pair up some dream teams…

OfflineI say give Capcom another crack at the portable Zelda franchises. They made 3 of the best portable Zelda games ever.
Agree that Sega should get another crack at F-Zero. Miyamato says he doesn’t know where to take the franchise next yet they crank out Mario Karts every 2-3 years. Sega did a marvelous job, give it back to them.
2D Metroid- Give the kings of 2D sidescrollers Wayforward a shot at making a 2D Metroid title either for the 3DS or an eshop title for Wii U. They’ve got the skills for it!!
How about another collaboration with Square Enix for Mario RPG 2. There’s been the Paper Mario series which are awesome but there never was a true sequel to their original collaboration.

OfflineI could definitely get behind Capcom doing Zelda. They have their roots in the arcade, and with Nintendo’s collaboration IT could be good provided Aonuma stays in his cage.
Sega is a natural for F-Zero.
I really like your idea of making Metroid a DL title, though I don’t know much about WayForward. Metroid needs a serious reboot in order to rebuild consumer confidence, and a cheap WiiWare game with classic metroid gameplay could be the kind of package that consumers might bite on.
Mario RPG 2: Good idea! Mario RPG2 by Squenix? FUCK NO! HELL NO! YOU STUPID BASTARDS STAY AWAY FROM MARIO RPG! GO RUIN YOUR OWN GODDAMN IP’S! YOU’VE STILL GOT KINGDOM HEARTS TO DESTROY SO GO DO THAT!
I’m not in character there. That is real vitriol. Fuck You Square!

If it helps, WayForward made the “Adventure Time” video game, and the cult classic “Shantae” for the Game Boy Color. They also made the upcoming remake of the NES “DuckTales” game.

I don’t like to say this, but no Square Enix, no “Mario RPG 2”. It’s their property, they own the name and the assets. But on the bright side, there’s this article I found from last March, which could be a happy ending.

OfflineThank God for small favors, then lol!
Stick with Paper Mario and don’t let Square touch it ever again!!!
That article is not a happy ending, it is indeed proof positive that Square has forgotten how to make a good game, and that they do not know what good gameplay is anymore.
“One employee recommended that “the tutorial should be longer and mandatory” after they could not figure out how to do timed hits despite beating the entire game”
-DO THESE DEVELOPERS EVEN PLAY GAMES OUTSIDE OF MANDATORY PLAYING FOR THEIR JOBS? I know six year olds that have no problem doing this…. Mandatory tutorials is just additional bullshit that gets in the way. I cannot believe how out of touch you piece of shit people are with your average gamer…
“Some employees suggested adding more cutscenes and turning the game into an MMORPG.”
-I am just at a loss of words at this. No one played Mario RPG for the “Story”. And WTF @ an MMO? Are they fucking serious.
“One employee was fired after they said that “the ease from going to point A to B on the world map” was one of the top features of the game.”
-Fire the guy that says that ease of use (translation: no bullshit) is a good thing. Makes sense…..
“Many critics have even praised this game more highly than recently released titles like Final Fantasy XIII.”
-that’s your problem: If FF13 is your benchmark, you have serious fucking issues not just on how to tell a stroy, but on how to make a game.
EVERYONE NEEDS TO READ THIS ARTICLE!!!! It demonstrates the internal Hell within Square better than any gamer ever could…..Jesus…..

It’s kinda funny but ultimately sad. But it seems that genuine gamers, programmers, enthusiasts or people who care about the quality of gameplay are not having any input or impact on the scene with the exception of indie developers. It’s like they turn their backs on everything that made them what they are and turn into the ultimate squares – corporate fags who want to churn out those multimillion pound “triple A” fps titles with celebrity voices and cut-scenes to make a movie game – oh and lets make everything look like a fuckin’ PC game ‘coz thats dead original….. {SIGH} ![]()

I can play that game (and many others) all day you see, because it has genuine quality about it and an addictiveness that can penetrate most age brackets – young or old it’s a game that makes you want to progress with.
To be fair I don’t think that article is completely honest, most of those who gave up probably did so after hitting that first goomba and getting pissed off because of no tutorial at hand. I think the thing with our gen as compared with those brought up with 24/7 connectivity is patience, or a lack there of. Patience leads to understanding and a better grasp of situations despite frustrating moments which are usually handled in a positive way with the satisfaction/reward of further achievement. A lack of it in terms of casual gaming often leads to mounting frustration in a negative and hostile way.

OfflineWayForward is an interesting choice for a 2D Metroid. They certainly have some solid 2D chops. I’d also suggest Chair Entertainment, developers of Shadow Complex for Xbox Live Arcade. Shadow Complex is the closest we got to a 2D Metroid this gen (not counting the handheld Castlevanias of course).
That’s a very interesting article re: Square having their staff replay Mario RPG. About the guy getting fired for liking the map system, I really hope that wasn’t the main factor in his termination. You would hope that employees would be able to speak freely in what appears to be a creative exercise outside of their main responsibilities. If someone can be fired for having the “wrong opinion” within SquEnix, then it must be a very toxic environment.
I’m also astounded that someone thought Mario RPG needs more cut scenes. I guarantee he’s the first person to think that after playing the game, LOL.

OfflineActually, upon closer inspection I think that Play4Real is a joke website.
All of their articles are funny (and a little outlandish) and never appear on another gaming publication. They seem to be “the Onion” of the videogame news world.

OfflineI just gave it a closer look,
And By George I think you’re right! The Tim Schaeffer losing 2.5 million dollars and then the fans and backers being all like “It’s cool cause it’s Tim Schaeffer” is beyond funny, but absolutely untrue since such a thing would be front-page news!
I do like this site. It does a good job of satirizing the industry by exaggerating everything that is wrong with gamer culture these days.
Falsehoods, but damn funny falsehoods lol!

I want to apologize for taking those two articles at face value. I didn’t realize they were fake, and I’m embarrassed for taking them seriously.
The two articles were actually fairly believable. It wasn’t until I started poking around the site and saw some of their more outrageous articles (North Korea wanting to use the Xbox One to spy on its citizens, etc.) that I realized it had to be a joke.

We also should hopefully br seeing some new info on Pokken Tournament and Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem soon. Perhaps EA?
