(I only posted the 2nd part since that’s when the comparison actually starts.)
Honestly, I find the AVGN’s comparison to be lacking and somewhat biased.
For example:
-When he talks about 3D graphics, he said that the Genesis had to use hardware add-ons to achieve the same results as the Super-FX. However, he failed to take into account that the Genesis had a few 3D games that didn’t need add-ons such as Zero Tolerance and Virtua Racing. The latter uses the SVP (Sega Virtua Processor) chip to achieve the same graphical results that Starfox had.
-In the backwards compatibility section, one of the peripherals he talks about is the Super 8, which allowed the Super NES to play NES games. However, the Super 8 is unlicensed and not only that, but it’s really hard to find. Even then, there were some compatibility issues. The start and select buttons on the second controller do not work on NES games because the Super 8 is a Famicom clone rather than NES (there were no start or select buttons on the 2nd Famicom controller). Genesis on the other hand has the Power Base converter, which allowed the Genesis to play Master System games and is a licensed peripheral made by Sega themselves. In fact, the hardware in the Genesis itself made it so that the Master System games would be compatible for it. However, the Master System carts don’t fit in the Genesis cartridge slot, hence the Power Base Converter. The Genesis has 100% backwards compatibility from the get-go while it would take a few years for the Super NES to have backwards compatibility with the GB, but no official backwards compatibility with the NES.
-In the beat em’ up part of the video, he mentioned the flaws of the Super NES version of Final Fight and how the sequels fixed them. While he did mention Streets of Rage, he didn’t seem to acknowledge the sequels AT ALL. Streets of Rage 2 and 3 were vastly better than the first Streets of Rage.
– For the RPG section, the only Genesis RPG’s he talked about were the Phantasy Star games. He didn’t even mention any of the RPG’s on the Sega CD such as Dark Wizard, the Lunar games, and Popful Mail.

OfflineDont take anything AVGN says seriously. Its a comedy act, on purpose, and not even very funny.
As for your comments on the lack of RPG’s mentioned for the genesis, you referense to the sega CD. I havent watched the video, and i dont know the RPG library for the genesis very well, but you cant bring the sega cd into the comparision, since its an add-on system. Its not a genesis game, its a sega cd game. Im sure he couldve mentioned more cartridge based rpg’s tho if that was your initial point.

I type and read very literally and use no undertones. Thank you for trying to understand. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A.....r_syndrome

True, Lunar is a Sega CD game, but I always considered the Sega CD and 32X games to still technically be part of the Genesis library since you need one to plug a Sega CD or 32X into the system to play the games released for those add-ons.
As for the cartridge based RPG’s, there were a few he didn’t mention such as Beyond Oasis, and Landstalker for example. Super NES would obviously still win in the RPG department, but at least the comparison should be a bit more fair.
His Genesis vs. SNES video isn’t actually an AVGN episode. I should’ve worded my thread title a bit bettter.

I think you are confusing the term “technically” here. _Technically_ it is NOT a genesis/megadrive game, because, as we have established, you cant play it on the genesis/megadrive alone. _Basically_ it is part of the genesis/megadrive game library, because you need one to be able to play it to begin with. So i think i know what you ment, but you said it the opposite way. I did actually watch the video after i typed my initial comment and although he toned things down from the crap he usually pulls, i stand by my initial comment.

OfflineWatched the video and I agree with Mark that the video while good, seemed a little biased and lacked pertinent information.
Obviously he was a Nintendo kid, so he would be a little biased. Some of the topics are subjective though, like console design and preference between the two libraries.
Some categories were spot on like the original controller comparison. With the backwards compatibility thing, I think we can discount the Super 8 for the reasons you mentioned. After that we have to consider whether the Game Boy library is better or if the Master System one is.
The RPG and Beat-em up sections were the other ones that weren’t fleshed out properly. He didn’t mention the Sega CD games because they are not Genesis games. He should of done more research and mention the other Genesis RPG’s they you posted above.
It’s an incomplete analysis, but it was an ok watch.

I made a grammar correction to what you wrote above. Writing should’ve as “should of” and could’ve as “could of” is a major pet peeve of mine.
Anyhow, I’ve been without Internet access for September up until now. Switching between ISPs in Japan can take a long time. I did watch James’s video, and while he isn’t a highly technical type of nerd, he is a knowledgeable film critic. His insights into Sega’s marketing were rather interesting. There really isn’t many RPGs for the Genesis, outside of the Phantasy Star series, Landstalkers, and Shining in the Darkness. Lunar and the rest mentioned above were for the CD. There must’ve been more Megadrive RPGs in Japan that were never ported, but the SNES/SFC wins hands down in the RPG category. However, it probably comes a bit short in the shmup category, or at least it’s a tie.
And speaking of the CD, I recently bought Final Fight CD for the Megadrive. Unlike the SFC/SNES version that couldn’t put all 3 playable characters on one game, this one is complete. I have yet to play it, though.
Technically, the SNES is superior to the Genesis. It came out later, and besides having a faster processor, the Genesis loses in pretty much every category. The color palette and sound processor especially are lacking on the Genesis. To make it worse, the sound chip was worse after the first generation of Genesis consoles that said “high definition graphics” across the top. They skimped on production costs, so the sound got worse. You can listen to sound samples on the Wikipedia page.
However, none of this makes the Genesis a bad console. Of course, good games is what makes a console great, and there is plenty of fun to be had with a Genesis. When I was in high school though, I went with the SNES.
