OfflineMan! After looking at both catalogs, it was really damn close between Konami and Capcom. I did a quick count of what I consider to be “quality” games for either developer (spanning mega hits like CV4 and MMX, to solid games like King of Dragons and Tournament Fighters), and it came out Capcom 17, Konami 16. That was even eliminating some Capcom games that could be considered quality (Super SF2 is an OK game, I just love Turbo much more), or games I wasn’t sure about (is MMX3 quality?). I don’t know if I could pick a clear winner, here, but I will say that it’s not even close to the next best third party developer. I don’t know how you could pick Square, as they have about 7 quality games (that’s even counting borderline stuff like FFMQ and Secret of Evermore!). Granted, I wasn’t factoring imports for my counts, but you could easily add more solid games for Konami and Capcom if you did.
That’s my super-anal take on it, anyway. 😮

OfflineI was counting imports when I decided square and Capcom and Konami have huge hits but Square’s hits are legendary, chrono trigger secret of mana and FF series. I included secret of mana 2 and treasure hunter G (import games) Square had less hits but bigger ones. Just everyone’s own opinion no right or wrong.

OfflineYeah, there is no right or wrong answer, but I felt in the mood for a spirited debate. 🙂 Square made a few classics, for sure, but I would say that Capcom matches up to them in that department. SF2 Turbo and Mega Man X are pretty legendary.
As to who I would choose after that. Titus is a really weird one for me, because they have some games that are cool because they are unique… and then have some games that are just uniquely weird. Hehe. Taito and Natsume are both pretty solid, but I might personally choose Enix because they have a good variety of games in their smaller catalog. EVO, Actraiser, and Soul Blazer are high on my SNES list, and Robotrek and Brain Lord are fun too.
Yeah, I’d probably go Enix. All of their games seem to have just a liiiiittle something different going for them.

OfflineSquare vs Capcom is a great debate. Chrono trigger vs megaman x, street fighter 2 vs super mario rpg, Disney games vs secret of mana. It’s such a great debate all those games are amazing.Throw in Konami with TMNT IV, Contra and Castlevania IV and there will be some heated debates.
I have not played a lot of Enix games because they are so expensive. I want to try EVO really bad though.

OfflineYou’re right, Konami easily gets into that mix with some legendary games. Super CV4 is a Top 10 game for me, and
Contra III is a pretty obvious classic. Konami might also get bonus points for pushing hardware to the limit more, as well as having some amazing soundtracks (some of the Capcom stuff comes up just a tiny bit flat, to me).
Funny how Enix has become this sort of cult classic company on the SNES. I was lucky enough to get in before it got TOO crazy!

OfflineHmm lets see. Konami for the SNES and probably Konami overall but Id like to give honorable mentions to companies like Hudson Soft, Atlus, Ascii, Natsume, Human, Masaya, Office Koukan and Taito.
Konami’s games vary from the conventional to the downright bizarre but are so full of originality, excellent design and solid gameplay that its hard for me to see beyond them as my favourite. Some of Konami’s best SNES entries (imo) below;
- Axelay
- Adventures of Batman & Robin
- Batman Returns
- Biker Mice From Mars
- Castlevania IV
- Contra Spirits
- Gradius III
- International Superstar Soccer
- Legend of the Mystical Ninja
- Ganbare Goemon 2
- Parodius Da!
- Gokujou Parodius
- Chatting Parodius
- Pop ‘n Twinbee
- Rainbow Bell Adventures
- Sparkster
- Sunset Riders
- Tiny Toon Adventures Buster Busts Loose
- TMNT Turtles In Time
- TMNT Tournament Fighters
- Zombies Ate My Neighbors
They also did some cracking stuff on the rival console such as Rocket Knight Adventures, Busters Hidden Treasure and Castlevania The New Generation.

OfflineI’d vote for Cacpom too, but it is VERY close between them and Konami. The reason I give the edge to Capcom is because they had excellent games in a wider variety of genres (beat ’em up, platformer, RPG, shmup, fighting, etc.).
I agree with Masa, Capcom was Nintendo’s best friend those days. Konami on the other hand was a friend to both SEGA and Nintendo, with excellent games on both the SNES and Genesis. So I’d have to say that Konami was the best 16-bit third party developer overall.
Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown

OfflineYeah Hudson were pretty cool. Always been partial to a blast on Super Bomberman, any of them really.
One the best things about the 16-bit era is that there was a good amount of competition and originality, you can find a good deal of companies that tried their hand at wide range of game genres. A golden period no doubt.
