Nintendo of America finally announces Earthbound for the Wii U virtual console!

http://ca.ign.com/articles/201…..al-console

As a non-Wii owner, I have to ask; does this mean only Wii U owners can purchase the game?  If so, it looks like Nintendo may have held back on the game to help sell Wii U’s.

If it’s only on the Wii U, I doubt it’ll cause too much of a drop in the price of cartridges, at least until Nintendo sells more consoles.

What do you think?

I’m assuming that it’ll only be on the Wii U VC. Also, I don’t think the VC releases have any effect on the price of carts or CD’s.

I remember when this game got an ESRB rating back in 2008 or so. The whole Starmen.net community went crazy about it. Over time, that excitement pretty much turned to anger.

I read about this earlier today on a random website. I didn’t know if I should take it seriously or not. Well it’s great news. I just hope everything is intact.

Conspiracy theory:

It was Nintendo of America who bid up the price of all those Earthbound cartridges on eBay to the current $200 per cart level.

Now the price bof a Wii U and the price of an Earthbound cartridge is comparable.

Next, they announce that Earthbound is coming to the Wii U VC and all of a sudden a Wii U sounds like a bargain!

As insane as that sounds, I would not be at all surprised if they had not at least THOUGHT of this by looking at the demand for EB carts. Though as I have said before, it would be a LOT easier to just make games that people want to play.

I won’t buy one for this.

1)I already OWN Earthbound…..and It’s mine forever. I OWN Earthbound, not just renting it from Nintendo until the rhardware finally dies. No Accounts means I am not guarenteed to own my games. (What is so difficult about this? Movies and Music figured this out long ago.) If I buy Earthbound, I am not guarenteed ownership of the game in later generations. The problem with this is that ownership it tied to the finite lifespan of modern hardware. Fuck that!!

Even if I buy it, I will have to put up with this Miiverse bullshit. Fuch that!! This is not the job I want the system to do. I want to PLAY GAMES, and I want an easy and intuitive way to play with others.I don’t want to play Earthbound while some idiot’s comments pop up. This is not the job I want a video game console to do! I have a PC if I want to engage in social Media (and I don’t). Stop Cramming all this shit into the console!

So true, I already hate the amount of pop-up’s, upgrade screens and dlc shoved in my face from seeing a friends Xbox 360 in action. But the current generation cannot function without 24/7 social media so games consoles have to go that route to get those customers to spend money. We as cash-cows to these companies are simply redundant. I to just want a console to play games and good games – not an unfinished mess where you have to pay extra to be able to gain enjoyment from it nor do I want to be online 24/7 to play an rpg or simulation.

On topic though I think it’s a wise if somewhat obvious move to put Earthbound on the Wii U’s VC. Perhaps they will do likewise with EVO:Search for Eden.

My conspiracy theory was of course a joke, though it is great to see Nintendo finally bring this game to the VC.

While owning a physical Earthbound cartridge is definitely preferable to having a VC-rom installed on your console, I still think that this is great news.  The current going rate for an EB cart is more then a lot of people are willing to pay, myself included.  At VC prices, this will give many people the chance to legally experience the game AND show Nintendo their support for the franchise.

For these reasons, I applaud Nintendo for finally bringing the game out on the VC.

It is certainly better than nothing.

If you are absolutely Hellbound on playing earthbound on the cheap AND have a WiiU, go for it! just understand that as of right now, when your WiiU finally kicks the bucket you can kiss it goodbye since Nintendo STILL has no accounts system.

That is why i call it a rental…At this rate the seventh generation will mark the last time we actually get to OWN our games.

Mong, I think most folks are aware that by purchasing a VC game, it is tied to their console.

That said, at $200 per loose cart, the cost of owning an Earthbound cartridge is prohibitive to most.  That is simply too much to pay for any one game, especially in an era where $200 can potentially buy a LOT of games.

At $10 (or whatever EarthBound ends up costing) for a VC-rom, the VC option is a definite bargain.

It also has the benefit of showing support to Nintendo for a franchise they’ve all but abandoned.  Seeing as how this can potentially lead to another EarthBound game in the future, I can only see the EarthBound VC release as a good thing.

I was planning to buy a Wii U at some point anyway. This sort of makes the purchase more enticing to me. I would still want to buy the Player’s Guide though.

It seems like Earthbound won’t have any music changed according to this article. That’s good news b/c I want to experience this game in its original glory.

Definitely true1 who Knows? Perhaps if it does well enough we may even see Mother 3 or a new mother RPG ( dare to dream)

Now if they did THAT, I’d but a WiiU. I would have no other option because I don’t emulate.

Mother 3 on the 3DS is a real possibility.

I was under the impression that Shigesato Itoi wasn’t interested in doing a Mother 4.  Maybe that’s changed?

“Wii U a Global Sales Flop as Old Wii Outsells Nintendo’s New Casual Dream”

I hate to be a prophet of doom but this doesn’t look good for Nintendo…

It doesn’t look good right now, but I’m not counting Wii U out just yet. Nintendo turned the 3DS around, perhaps they could do the same for their latest console system too.

I REALLY love this site for the reviews but man I’ve just been reminded why I don’t visit the forums here all that often any more. I’ve been going through alot of the recent posts & everything announced by Nintendo is ripped to shreds and discounted as drivel. I’m not saying everyone does it but the few that do just really drag the site down. I’m all for passionate discussion about gaming but you would think some people are on suicide watch here with every Nintendo announcement that gets posted and then debunked.

There’s alot wrong with Nintendo right now & there’s alot right as well. I would just think that with a Nintendo fan site there would be a little more enthusiasm & positivity. Maybe it’s because there’s not that many members yet or maybe it’s the few posts that are made get dominated with the negative views but I think this is a great site & would love to see it grow as it has unlimited potential especially with the huge rush for retro gaming right now but with such vitriol & negativity on almost every forum post I just don’t see it being very welcoming to many gamers and that makes me kind of sad.

Now that’s not fair…. After all I just ripped Microsoft a new asshole on DRM lol!

In all honesty I think Nintendo is still the best of the bunch, but are they fulfilling their potential? No. Not by a long shot! I want to see them return to the greatness of the SNES, and if this website had been up in 2005-2010 You would have seen a different attitude here, at least for my part. The Wii was the first gaming console I have purchased in almost 15 years! Still love it.

As for the negativity, perhaps it stems from the fact that there is very little positive to talk about as of right now for WiiU owners? What I want to hear is a positive voice since it would lend perspective. For example someone looking forward to 3D Mario and Pikmin 3? Are they out there? Does anyone even care?

I want to hear this perspective and I know it is out there, but it really does seem like there is no excitement for next-gen. And though you will not hear many retro gamers excited (that is why we are retro gamers) for next gen, I still think that this site is overwhelmingly better at promoting free discussion of gaming than gamefaqs or IGN, where everyone has a vendetta and you are always shouted down. That said, we are not necessarily a NINTENDO Fansite, just the SNES. Personally my loyalty is to good games.

If there is excitement and for anything Nintendo is doing nowadays, WE WANT TO HEAR IT! As for myself, there is a fine line between truthful opinion and negativity, and I will try to walk it a bit better.

I’m excited for a new 3D Mario as well as Pikmin but I’m just as equally excited for the new 3DS Zelda which is more or less a sequel for A Link To The Past and the Earthbound release for Wii U is actually a pretty big deal for most gamers who missed it or don’t wanna pay un-godly sums of money for it. It’s a digital release but short of them re-issuing SNES cartridges that’s about the best we can expect from Nintendo at the moment. It was a BIG win for alot of SNES fans and it should be celebrated not dissected. A win is a win. = )

Also, Miiverse doesn’t affect the game while you’re playing it, there are no pop ups whatsoever. It’s a completely optional choice to participate in the Miiverse communities of games. Nintendo isn’t forcing it on anyone but it’s there if you choose to use it, which is the way it should be. I too would be annoyed if it was mandatory & there were pop-ups or notifications during gameplay. Actually the creator of Earthbound has said that the overwhelming outcry on Miiverse by fans is what led to Nintendo’s decision to finally release it.

As for the current state of Wii U right now….yeah it’s a mess but the light can almost be seen. E3 will see unveiling of all the big franchises that fans bought their Wii U’s for and most are coming this holiday season. The 3DS was in the same peculiar boat and what turned it around was Nintendo releasing their AAA franchises one after the other. The price drop did help but it was their big guns that righted the ship. Even if the Wii U ends up only selling Gamecube type numbers, I’m fine with that as that was probably my 2nd favorite Nintendo console after SNES. Should the Wii U be in a better position? Yeah by all means the post launch drought has been a disaster but I have a feeling this time next year we’ll still be too busy playing the holiday 2013 titles to remember a drought.

I may have gotten off track but these were just some little things sticking to my brain. = ) So yeah, a little more positivity with  a little less mis-information would go a long ways.

I too am looking forward to see the next 3D Mario. wink

I often wonder why this forum has 100 members yet very little activity. Thank you TK for expressing your opinion about why the forum isn’t very active. If more positive people would become active on the forum to balance out the negative, perhaps it would be a better community. But the question remains how to attract more people to the site, specifically the forums?

No problem. I plan on making a trip here at least once a day to view the posts. I had gotten sidetracked with some PS3 & 360 titles and now I’m back in retro game mode again. Glad to see the community has grown!! As far as making it grow more. The Youtube angle is a very good bet especially gameplay demonstration videos or video reviews. That could really help pull people into the site for the great articles and written reviews etc….just my 0.02!! = )
