OfflineWith Konami’s gaming division in dire straits these days (Kojima leaving, Silent Hills being cancelled, focusing on mobile), I thought it would be nice to look back on their golden age as a third party SNES developer; a time where seemingly every game they made was gold.
It’s tough to pick just one favourite, but if I had to choose I’d probably go with Contra III. The game has an excellent pick up and play quality to it so I know I can have a great time with it no matter how much time I have to spare.
What’s your favourite Konami SNES (or Super Famicom) game?

OfflineGreat question! At first I thought it would be hard to decide, but I quickly thought of Super Castlevania IV. The choice is easy for me; the game is a masterpiece in nearly every facet, with nary a wasted level (though we all hate the dungeons, which is just). Contra III is probably a close second, and maybe Zombies Ate My Neighbors a third (maybe).

OfflineNot going under, simply re-aligning their business inrerests in a way that barely includes gaming. That is what the spat with Kojima is about, and that is what the mobile division is about. The mobile division will be used to create a new generation of gamblers, who Konami hopes will visit casinos and video gambling parlors when they are older. They are leaving games to focus on gambling.
Smart fucking business, and while I am sad we will not be getting the excellent looking Silent Hills or any more MGS, thats really all Konami has done for the last decade; those two franchises. And one is un-affordable (though very good) while the other is on life support.
As for my favorite Konami game, Zombies is tops, followed by Contra 3. Damn Konami used to be good…….

OfflineI think you’re selling Konami’s last 10 years a bit short Mong (just a bit though). In addition to MGS and Silent Hill, they made 3 excellent DS Castlevania games, Castlevania Lords of Shadow (the first one was fairly well received), Suikoden V, the Rebirth games on the Wii and Hard Corps: Uprising. And of course’s there’s the Pro Evolution Soccer series which is far and away Konami’s biggest money maker (as far as gaming franchises go anyways). Not Konami’s best 10 years by any stretch, but there were some highlights here and there (which are admittedly weighted towards the beginning of the time period).
As an aside, I was also interested to learn that fitness and health centres are a big part of Konami’s business as well. Like you said, they’re doing OK as a business but their gaming division is pretty much finished. Here’s hoping they don’t take their old games down from the Virtual Console…
Back to Konami’s glory days though, they were so good on the SNES that you could easily come up with a Top 10 list with every entry being a high quality title. Not many publishers you could say that about; really only Nintendo, Capcom and maybe Square. Might be a good idea for an article…
