Has anyone tried Chrono Trigger Crimson Echoes?

It’s the fan made sequel to Trigger that helps fill in the gaps between Trigger and Cross.

I’ve never played it, but apparently there are some reproduction carts floating around out there!

No I haven’t played it, but the game is fetching a pretty penny on Ebay. I’m more interested in Japanese translated games myself. I still haven’t picked up Clock Tower yet!

I’ve seen a bit of a let’s play; thanks for sharing that video.  It looks really well made.

I’m a little apprehensive about how it ties into Chrono Cross though.  The more I think about it, the more I wish Chrono Cross was non-cannon.

SPOILERS

Cross craps all over Trigger by killing off most of the main cast and by rendering Trigger’s epic eon spanning-quest to save the future pointless in a mere 20 years.

Ironically in a game about parallel dimensions, Chrono Cross itself ends up being a bit of a paradox.  It is both a great game and a bad sequel.

Thanks for the spoiler alert. I haven’t played Chrono Cross yet, and I don’t want to get spoiled. Unless the game features some of the characters or locales of Chrono Trigger, or at least mentions them in dialogue, I’m treating Cross as a totally separate entity from Trigger.

Glad I put the spoiler warning there.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to treat it as an entirely separate entity.

On the plus side, the music is awesome (even better then Trigger’s).

Just began playing CE. It is brilliant for a fan-made game. Buy it if you like Trigger and want more to do. you will not be disappointed.

As For the unfortunate cancellation on one hand I understand Square trying to protect their IP, on the other hand FUCK YOU SQUARE!! SERVES YOU RIGHT FOR SHOEHORNING IDEAS FROM A CHRONO SEQUEL INTO THE REPUGNANT FF13 TRILOGY.

How are you playing it Mong?  Did you go the repro cart route or are you using an emulator.

Let us know if the quality holds up!

Squenix is the worst when it comes to cancelling fan projects (they have a long history of it).  Nintendo hates emulation more than just about any company, but even they turn a blind eye to fan translations of Mother 3 as long as people aren’t making money off of it.

He’s probably playing it on a cart. I’m sure Mongunzoo has a thriving repro collection now.

Why play it on an emulator when you can play it on the real hardware?

Sorry guys! Never saw this one lol!

I will eventually review this, so I am definitely playing on a repro cart! I will never emulate any game I review for various reasons.

1.In order to get a true feeling for the game I am playing, it MUST be played on the actual intended hardware. How can I claim to know what a game is really like ON SNES if I’m playing on nonstandard hardware?

2.In an effort to actually put out a review with proper weight, I BUY every single game I review, whether it costs 1 or 100 dollars. One of the biggest problems I have with “game journalists” (THAT TERM!) is that they are often spouting off about games they have no investment in (provided by the publisher). I’m sorry, but if you didn’t spend the money on it you cannot know what its like to spend hours with a bad game trying to like it because you plunked down the cash for it. You can’t appreciate a truly great game all the more, knowing the money was justified. Its easy to say”that game is shit”, and “that game is amazing” when you don’t have any finances in the game to begin with.

Hope this clarifies not only the question but also how I review games in general.

Mong, have you played Chrono Cross and/or Radical Dreamers?  I understand the game is meant to tie in with both games (especially Cross), so that may be a factor you wish to consider in your review.

I have forced myself through Radical Dreamers *(Uhghh……)

Chrono Cross…..I just don’t have it in me to experience any more of Square’s “storytelling”. ill read a Wikipedia synopsis or something. As long as the story is fun and competent, I cannot see Crimson echoes committing too bad of a crime. Canon really doesn’t interest me anyway.

Chrono Cross is a great game, despite having a convoluted story that’s a bit of a downer.

The game follows in Trigger’s footsteps by removing a lot of the fat from RPGs (random battles, etc.) and even streamlines things further by doing away with levelling up for the most part and allowing the player to auto heal after a battle.

The presentation is also top-notch, with surprisingly good graphics for a PS1 game and a phenomenal soundtrack.

The battle system is pretty unique and has a decent amount of strategy.  Double and triple techs have been almost entirely removed unfortunately.

The game also has a very cool vibe.  The game makes the player feel unsettled (like you haven’t really got your bearings) by having the player travel to an alternate dimension very early on and this feeling never really lets up.  It makes for a neat experience.

However, despite tying in with Trigger’s plot, it really feels vastly different in a lot of ways.  The whole game takes place in a tiny archipelago that wasn’t a factor at all in Trigger’s plot (despite being in the same world).  The tight, loveable, motley crew of party members from Trigger is replaced with a huge, even more motley crew of around 40 characters, most of whom have zero development or even much of a reason to be laying their life on the line for the hero’s cause in the first place.

Overall, I find the whole package to be very good and its one of the PS1 RPGs I find myself coming back to the most.  The biggest knock I have against it is that it really didn’t need to be a sequel to Chrono Trigger and could have probably done just as well or better as a standalone game (from a critical standpoint, not a sales standpoint).  Its’ contribution to the Chrono-cannon is minimal at best and very negative at worst.   I still recommend giving it a shot though.

Man oh man, That soundtrack is one of the most gorgeous things my ears have ever heard.

I own it and still give it a play to mesmerized friends that are shocked that it came form a videogame…
