I find this to be one of the most interesting, unique, and challenging games for the SNES. The item/weapon system gives you multiple options for beating levels, while also forcing you to manage your inventory for “the long game”, and the level design manages to keep you engaged for 50+ levels, which is pretty amazing.

That said, this game is tough. If you try to beat it, it can damage your soul.

The password system is almost useless, as has been commonly discussed by fans of the game. You need to stockpile lots of items for the harder, later stages in the game, so you may as well just start from the beginning. There might be a “sweet spot” for where to start, but I wouldn’t bother trying to find it. The final boss is incredibly difficult even if you DO manage to save up powerful weapons to fight him with. I made it all the way just once, and fell just short of killing him. I sat there, itemless, powerless… defeated. And that was even WITH using a strategy guide.

So… have you beaten this game?

The furthest I’ve gotten is in the level 40s. Tough game I would like to beat but I think I would need a skilled partner to do that.

Getting to the 40s is pretty impressive! But I imagine you had a similar feeling when you made it that far only to ultimately fail… :(

I should say that I took breaks during my final stage playthrough, and had to leave the SNES on for a couple days (I believe I spread it out over two days).

BTW, check out the code for the secret developer level, if you haven’t. One of the most brilliant secret levels in any game, ever!

Really I had never heard of the secret level. I’ll have to check it out

I have the game but haven’t played it yet. I heard many stories about how unfair the password system is. This game would have benefited so much with a battery backup.

I figure when I do play it, I’ll be leaving my SNES on for days on end to beat this game.

On the one hand, yes it would have benefited from a battery, but on the other hand, part of what makes it unique is that it’s a long-ish game that you have to beat in one sitting. :)
