OfflineI find this to be one of the most interesting, unique, and challenging games for the SNES. The item/weapon system gives you multiple options for beating levels, while also forcing you to manage your inventory for “the long game”, and the level design manages to keep you engaged for 50+ levels, which is pretty amazing.
That said, this game is tough. If you try to beat it, it can damage your soul.
The password system is almost useless, as has been commonly discussed by fans of the game. You need to stockpile lots of items for the harder, later stages in the game, so you may as well just start from the beginning. There might be a “sweet spot” for where to start, but I wouldn’t bother trying to find it. The final boss is incredibly difficult even if you DO manage to save up powerful weapons to fight him with. I made it all the way just once, and fell just short of killing him. I sat there, itemless, powerless… defeated. And that was even WITH using a strategy guide.
So… have you beaten this game?

OfflineGetting to the 40s is pretty impressive! But I imagine you had a similar feeling when you made it that far only to ultimately fail…
I should say that I took breaks during my final stage playthrough, and had to leave the SNES on for a couple days (I believe I spread it out over two days).
BTW, check out the code for the secret developer level, if you haven’t. One of the most brilliant secret levels in any game, ever!
