OfflineI think we can all agree that a Link to the Past is one of the best SNES games ever. Â Well Nintendo has announced a direct sequel for the 3DS.
The first trailer is available at the link below and a 3D trailer is available on the 3DS:
http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04…..-the-past/
What’s everyone think about the new look and gimmicks?
Personally, this trailer hasn’t sold me on getting a 3DS. Â The art style seems a little less “serious” then a Link to the Past as well.

Offline I think that it is the same shit in a new bag. Toon Link + Gimmicky Puzzles + easy swordplay+ count me out.
Of course that is an analysis that could change, as we have seen very little.
Time will tell, but I find it very difficult to be excited about Nintendo anymore.

I dunno. I never played a handheld system before as I always liked the idea of a big screen. The 3DS has a lot of games I would buy if it were on a console, so if I were to buy a handheld, this would be the one.
As for this particular game, I’m not sold on the graphics. I would want a sequel to A Link to the Past to match more closely to the original artwork.

OfflineIt is simply amazing how they are on the edge of having the biggest console bomb since the SEGA Saturn and Virtual Boy and yet are doing next to NOTHING to stop it.
Why is the New Yoshi’s Island on the 3DS? Or Kid Icarus for that matter as both would function better on a console.
AND WTF WITH A MARIO PARTY?!? ON A HANDHELD?!?
None of these are system sellers, but they would go a long way in letting early adopters know that they have not been abandoned.

OfflineTo be fair, the Sega Saturn was successful in Japan, which is what Sega was going for. Â Sega’s Japanese HQ were embarassed by Sega of America / Sega Europe’s success in the 16-bit era, so they pulled the plug on the Genesis / Mega Drive early in those territories to focus on the Japanese market.
Now that I type this out, maybe the Saturn was a huge bust (by completely ignoring where Sega was already successful), though it was at least semi-successful in its mission of winning the Japanese market.Â
The new Yoshi’s Island is on 3DS because the Yoshi’s Island before that was on the DS. Â Nintendo moved most of their 2D games to handhelds in the GBA era.
Pikmin 3 is at least coming out in the summer, which will be a welcome sight to Wii U owners. Â
What Nintendo needs is a “Wii Sports” experience for the Wii U. Â Something that shows the average consumer that they need a crazy tablet controller. Â Until they get that, most hardcore gamers will view it as a PS3/Xbox 360 with a gimmicky controller and most average consumers won’t know the damn thing exists.

OfflineYeah. I know. That’s why I refer to the handhelds as the 2D Ghetto. God forbid they get a real budget and any modern trappings. (Orchestral Soundtracks, etc.)
Pikmin 3 will not move hardware, unless something massive has changed since the GC. I once asked this forum if I was missing anything by not playing Pikmin, and no one even responded which shows me how much clamor there is for one.
The problem with having a game to show us why we need that “crazy controller” is that we DIDN’T need that crazy controller, and Nintendo knows it! now they are once again in a situation where they are fighting their own hardware, where the promised 3rd party support is not there, and where the first party games are not what is demanded, but what they desire to make……
…………………..Doesn’t this company ever learn ANYTHING?
And you’re right. the branding sucks too. “Is this an add-on? does that tablet controller come with the Wii, too? so I can’t play NSMBU on my Wii? Why Not?
hahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well isn’t Nintendoland supposed to be to the Wii U what Wii Sports was to the Wii?
I really do think the first mistake was with the name as others above had alluded to. Why oh why couldn’t they have called it something else? Even calling it “The Wii 2” is better than calling it Wii U. I guess they didn’t want to copy Sony so obviously.

OfflineNintendoland lacks the mass-market appeal of Wii Sports. Â Playing an F-Zero or Luigi’s Mansion themed mini game really isn’t appealing to the average Joe. Â Being able to simulate bowling or golf in your living room on the other hand was great fun and really innovative when the Wii launched.
The Wii U, to me, has yet to prove why a big tablet controller is necessary. Â I get that Nintendo makes awesome games, but why do I need a weird, big, expensive tablet-controller to play them?
You’re right that the name was a terrible idea. Â Does anyone know what the U stands for? Â The Wii 2 or Super Wii or whatever is such an obvious name, you have to wonder why they didn’t go with it.

OfflineHaving watched the YI video, I have to say that at the moment it looks far more interesting than the new Zelda game.
That’s bad news for that Zelda since ALTTP got about 1000 percent more play time than YI on my SNES.

They could of dropped the “Wii” bit altogether. I never liked it.Â
Wii was a household name though. Â I say they were right to keep it, but should have put a 2 behind it or “super” in front of it.Â

OfflineThey can name it anything they want, if the consumer thinks it is unnecessary, it will fail until they can prove otherwise.
I have seen nothing that makes me want this yet. THAT’S the problem.
I need more than an uninspired Mario Brothers THAT I HAVE TO SHELL OUT EXTRA FOR to buy this system.
The five W’s of WiiU:
-where the fuck is DKC, Usports, and Mario Kart?
-why the fuck are the legacy games all on the 3DS?
-when the fuck is Nintendo going to give us an account system?
-what the fuck was Nintendo thinking by not packing in THE FIRST 2D MARIO GAME THAT LAUNCHED WITH NEW HARDWARE SINCE 1991!!!!!!!!!!)
-who the fuck really thought the game industry would support Nintendo given their history?

OfflineLOL @ the five W’s.Â
In theory, Nintendoland was the better pack-in. Â They need a killer app for the crazy tablet controller and Nintendoland was supposed to be it; obviously it failed in convincing even longtime Nintendo fans as to why they needed the console.
Mario probably would have been the better pack-in in practice, but it still doesn’t solve their problem re: the crazy tablet. Â Their entire system is centred around a crazy tablet controller. Â That’s it. Â It’s not very powerful (around Xbox 360 levels). What’s supposed to make it standout from the crowd is their crazy, expensive controller that is supposed to revolutionize gameplay. Â
More 2D Mario is always welcome…but why do I need a tablet controller?
Until Nintendo can answer that “W” for me, I won’t be purchasing a Wii U. Â Surely they had some games in mind when they built an entire console around this tablet….right?
Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown
I think the reason for the tablet was to revolutionize the way people play games in console form like the Wii did before it. It’s something different. Are people going to play console systems with the conventional controller forever or do people expect as time passes to have something more futuristic and techy to handle as they play their games? Will a conventional controller still be acceptable in the year 2070 or will it appear to be antiqued?
Also maybe down the line Nintendo was thinking of adding some sort of connectivity to their handheld games to entice people to buy/download them who otherwise wouldn’t bother with them (like me).

OfflineNintendo definitely intended to revolutionize the way we play games with the tablet, but they just haven’t sold me on that concept. Â Looking at the Wii U’s sales numbers, it looks like they haven’t sold a lot of people on that yet.
The Wii on the other hand was able to demonstrtate the potential of the Wiimote right out of the gate with Wii Sports.
I hope Nintendo treads cautiously with any handheld / console connectivity. Â It was a big focus of their strategy in the GC days and it ultimately felt very gimmicky. Â Nintendo’s focus on connectivity came at a time when their competitors were focusing on online play. Â As a result, gamers left Nintendo in the dust, as online play was the much larger innovation for the console market.
Also, many of the games that required connectivity to play felt very gimmicky and had ridiculous hardware requirements. Â Ever played Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles? Â It was supposed to be Square’s big return to Nintendo. Â It was a fun hack and slash game, but to truly experience it, you needed four friends with GBAs and four GBA to GC link cables. Â Because there was no “controller only” multiplayer, the game is basically unplayable today. Â Many gamers also called Nintendo / Square out on this gimmicky attempt to force connectivity. Â Having a small GBA screen to manage your inventor was cool, sure, but it should have been a bonus, not a requirement for playing.

OfflineBetween Dark Souls and 3D Dot Game Heroes, FromSoft does Zelda better than Nintendo anymore.
The only problems with 3D Dot is 1: It is extremely easy and 2: The presentation is insulting. Unlike Dark Souls I have to be reminded every time I look at this game that I have become a second-class citizen in this hobby.
It’s a fun game.leaps and bounds better than Zelda, but pales to Dark Souls

OfflineI don’t want the old presentation. If That is what I wanted I would just go play LOZ or crystalis because they are better games. What I want is the old game values updated and polished, then paired with a presentation that augments the systems strengths.
an example: Xenoblade Chronicles, which mixes old-school design sensibilities with a beautiful presentation and many innovations that remove the more frustrating elements of the older games I venerate.
Learn from history, not re-write it or repeat it. The biggest difference between 3D dot and dark Souls is that DS learns from history and 3D Dot repeats history.
That is the difference between a nod (3D dot Game Heroes) and a Buy (Dark Souls). If I buy new hardware, then I expect to see it used. Â
