I know a similar topic as probably been covered somewhere on these boards but whatever.. So I’m looking to play some SFC titles and would like you guys to pitch in some names for me if you can!
I’ll try to list most of the games I’m already aware of :
- Clock Tower
- Do Re Mi Fantasy
- Dragon Ball Super Butoden 1-2-3
- GS Mikami
- Gundam Wing Endless Duel
- Magical Pop’n
- Parodius
- Rendering Ranger R2
- Rockman & Forte

- SD Hiryuu no Ken
- SFC Wars
- Shonen Ninja Sasuke
- Tactics Ogre
- Tales of Phantasia
- Violonist of Hamelin
- Zen-Nihon Pro Wrestling
- Rudra no hihou
Do you guys have any more ideas for good games to try out? I’m not looking for a particular genre.. but it would help if the games were (fully) playable without knowing Japanese.
Those are a solid list already.
I would list:
The Firemen
Super Back to the Future II
Macross Scrambled Valkyrie
Undercover Cops
Go Go Ackman 1, 2, 3
Ghost Chaser Densei
Magical Adventure 3
Ganbare Daiku no Gensan
Araiguma Rascal: Raccoon Rascal
Shin Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun: Kunio-tachi no Banka

I was in Tokyo last september and I visited Akihabara a number of times during my visit. My sole reason for going to Akihabara was looking for SFC games that are playable without knowing any Japanese. I bought around 20 games, some of which are released in NA and Europe, but they’re MUCH cheaper in Japan. I’ll list a couple SFC exclusive games that I bought and that can be enjoyed without understanding Japanese.
Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie – One of the best SHMUPs on the system. Awesome music!
Disney’s Magical Quest 3 Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck – I had no idea this game even existed until I found it in a small retro video game store in Tokyo. It’s the third game in the Magical Quest series, and if you’ve played the first two you’ll know that they are among the best co-op games on the SNES.
Rockman and Forte – You already listed this in your opening post, but yeah, you should get it. It’s probably my favorite Megaman game ever, though it is hard, and can be a bit pricey!
Ganbare Goemon 2 – It’s Goemon (Mystical Ninja) but more adventureish. This game does have a bit more text that the games I’ve mentioned above, but it’s not too bad.
So those are the ones I can think of right now. 🙂

Tokyo was awesome! I’ll definitely be going back there sometime in the future. During my two week visit in Japan I spent the entirety of that time in Tokyo which I regret a little bit. Don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty to do and see in Tokyo, and you could easily spend a few weeks there and still feel that you’ve only scratched the surface. It would have been fun to visit Kyoto and other places is what I mean. Next time I’ll probably spend around a month or so in Japan, and I’ll definitely visit more places.

I’ve got 7 Super Famicom games. The Japanese versions of Aladdin, Magical Quest, A Link to the Past, Earthbound and SimCity as well as Pop’n Twinbee and baseball game made by Hudson, the third one. I wanna find games I can play without knowing much, if any, Japanese in the JewWario tradition. That is a bit harder than you’d think.

I cannot recommend GS Mikami enough. You won’t understand the short cutscenes, but you can watch the subbed anime for that ;). It’s an action platformer, I guess. Plays a lot like Ninja Warriors and the Power Rangers game also developed by Natsume. I had not heard of this game before Ghost mentioned it a while back.

The first Power Rangers game on the SNES (1994) is still fairly cheap but yeah, Ninja Warriors probably is quite expensive nowadays. Got it for around $80 USD a year ago. Power Rangers is a beat ’em up/platformer. The platform bits aren’t very difficult.. the whole game is actually VERY easy. Ninja Warriors on the other hand has no platform bits but has a more refined combat system. GS Mikami feels similar to these games in the way the character feels when you move it around I guess. Its combat is mostly ranged while Ninja Warriors is very close melee combat. The platforms in GS Mikami are much more elaborate than in Power Rangers. All three games definitely have that same ”Natsume feel” to them. I believe I actually reviewed Power Rangers for this site.

Cool I’ll check it out. Power Rangers were never my thing, even as a kid I found the show very meh. There was a decent fighting game on the MD I had though so I’m not discounting it completely. Also a PR racing game for the SNES that I am fully ignorant of.
It’s funny really, GS Mikami is probably the reason why I still play Super Nintendo to this day and why I’m on here too I guess, so its been a very influential title for me.

He does look pretty hard with those curved blades in each hand. I just checked current listings though and its gonna cost me around £100 – £250 ($140 – $350!) depending on condition etc. so I don’t think I’ll own a physical copy anytime soon. I’ll have a look on my Xbox, its probably on there. Tell you what, I’m so glad I bought a lot of now-expensive games when I did some years ago.

Yo Masa, I’ll get on a review of the GS game once I go through it again (which won’t be long). It’s becoming quite expensive these days, even for a cart.
Played some Serie A: Ace Striker the other day, it’s not quite up to the standards of ISS Deluxe but to be fair, its a decent and accessible soccer game in its own right and it plays a good game between friends.

Most of the notable ones have already been mentioned.
I’ll put in a word for Goemon Kirakira Douchu. I think it’s the best game in the entire series although there’s some sections where you will need to read Japanese or use a guide.
Majuu Ou is suprisingly decent. It’s extremely dark in tone and I love the background graphics. Kind of plays like a Castlevania game with projectiles.
Sutte Hakun is an interesting puzzle platformer. I’ve only played a few levels but so far it’s pretty cool. Similar to Umehara Kawase where you have to figure out how to solve levels.
Marchen Adventure Cotton 100% is a solid cute ’em up entry in the Cotton series. I haven’t played the PC Engine game yet but I much prefer it to the pseudo-3D Mega Drive / Genesis game.
I’m not a big sports game fan but I found Super Family Tennis to be enjoyable. There’s a beach stage and a stage where you play at the summit of a a mountain (which I find hilarious).
