Of all the Mario RPGs out there, which one is your favourite?

To me, Super Mario RPG is still the best.  It “feels” like an RPG much more then any of its sequels.  Though the Paper Mario / Mario & Luigi games do feel like they’re more in the Mario universe then Super Mario RPG.  Still, there is something about Mario RPG that really grabs me

Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown

I’m playing through Super Mario RPG for the first time on my Wii Virtual Console.  So far, I love it.  The Mario RPG game that comes closest to it, for me, is Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga.  I think it is one of the GBA’s best titles.

Currently looking for the following SNES games:

Chrono Trigger

EarthBound

Final Fantasy II (Final Fantasy IV)

Secret of Mana

Illusion of Gaia

Super Castlevania IV

Super Mario RPG

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

 Zombies Ate My Neighbors

TMNT IV

Contra III

Mario & Luigi was a great game.  Better then its sequels as well.

Have you tried the Paper Mario games?

I liked the original the best, but Superstar Saga was pretty awesome too actually.

my favorite was the Paper Mario series. when i was a kid (i was like 5 or 6 yrs old)i was so fascinated that Mario was paper. i wouldn’t stop playing the game.but it was a rental and i didnt know what the name was so i was really sad because i couldn’t remember the name. 10 yrs. later i found the game and was very happy.

The thousand year door was pretty well received. I was a paper Mario fan myself, but I did prefer the RPG series if you will. Great thing about Mario games are the versatility. Come on now, Mario Strikers was awesome!

Yeah I still have Paper Mario:The Thoasand Year Door & Mario Smash football for the GC, you’re right they are awesome. Smash Football is like Fifa Street but with all the Nintendo goodness thrown in. PM:1000YD is the only Paper Mario game I’ve sampled but it was epic and kept me hooked to the Gamecube for many good weeks. Quality title in a nutshell.

Nintendo announced that they will release Mario & Luigi: Dream Team for the 3DS this summer.  I hope this will be a much needed quality title for the 3DS.

EarthBound

Final Fantasy II (Final Fantasy IV)

Secret of Mana

Illusion of Gaia

Super Castlevania IV

Interesting that the 3DS now has both Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi; usually it’s one or the other!

I have been told that Thousand Year door is good.  I will have to try it at some point.

TTYD was great the first time through, though I haven’t been compelled to go back to it since.  Did you enjoy the first Paper Mario?  It is pretty similar to TTYD.

I wouldn’t say it’s better then Super Mario RPG, though TTYD’s world “feels” more like a Mario world then Mario RPG’s does.

Best RPG on the Cube by far is Skies of Arcadia Legends though.  It’s better then the DC original (despite having slightly more compressed music).

That Rieko Kodama sure knows how to make an RPG!

I liked paper Mario, so Yeah i will give this one a shot.

It sure wasn’t Mario RPG, though!

Skies of Arcadia was the last great JRPG I ever played until XenoBlade and Persona 4.  Though I am hearing great things about some PS3 game that just came out…

Can you play that on a PS3 or Wii?  Aside from SNES, NES, and Genesis those are the only systems I have.

Disgaea 3 and 4 are on PS3.  Never played them, but my brother seemed to enjoy 3.  I think that Disgaea 1 and 2 (on the PS2) are supposed to be the best.

Are you referring to Ni No Kuni as the new PS3 RPG?  It looks incredible!  I’ll probably check it out later this year (it seems to have sold well, so it shouldn’t be too hard to find after the inevitable price drop).

I’d recommend picking up Valkyria Chronicles if you haven’t tried it yet.  It’s my favourite PS3 game (outside of Super Street Fighter IV) and is an incredible update on the strategy RPG formula.  It’s basically a turn based strategy RPG, except you move your units in a third-person shooter style while enemies fire at you in real time.  Best of all Vyse and Aika from Skies of Arcadia are recruitable squad members!  Fina makes a guest appearance too as your squad’s medic.

Valkyria Chronicles also has a deep story that deals with themes such as racism, war, etc.

The squad members you can pick all have great personalities and some of them are pretty unique (such as openly gay characters, racist characters, loners, cowards, etc.  I think I need to replay it!

That’s the one!  It has artwork from Studio Ghibli, so that’s a plus!  Could it be that I may buy a NEW game this year : )

Valkyria Chronicles sounds exceptional.  Will look into it.  SF was great BTW!  Aside from some bloat (what modern fighters DONT have this?) it is an improvement on SF in every way.  Thank you!
