OfflineSo, has anyone played or own any GBA ports of Super NES games? I’ve been thinking about getting a few due to their cheaper price. How good are they compared to the originals?

OfflineMy firsthand experience with this consumer choice is limited to the Game Boy Advance port of “Super Mario World”, but having looked into it further I can offer some other advice.
Advance ports of Super Nintendo games are, in a sense, technologically superior; the graphics are brighter, the sprite animations are more detailed, and the sound is fuller. The risk here, though, is that these upgrades sort of detract from the experience that, on the Super Nintendo, these games were probably meant to originally convey. In a usual port, the characters chirp more often and more refined color choices are made for certain areas, and changes like these fill in some blank spots that the player may have been meant to fill in themselves. I like what Mongunzoo said somewhere in this forum, that “games are most ideal on their original hardware”, and I like to think this is part of what he means.
But don’t be dissuaded by any of this, either. If you aren’t bothered by superficial changes that leave the core gameplay intact, go ahead and pick up the Advance ports. I recommend them as a starter collection anyway, like my ZSNES emulator. Like any good starter collection, it may not even be necessary to move past it.

OfflineIt depends on the game. Nintendo had a really bad habit of throwing voiceovers from N64 games onto these 16-bit ports, without thinking about how much more often the characters will USE those voice samples, and how much more annoying it would be as a result! (Link swings his sword much more, Mario jumps more often ect.)
If you have both a SNES and a GBA,Play the SNES version unless your budget says they are out of reach.

OfflineAre you looking at Nintendo published games specifically or all SNES to GBA ports?
The Nintendo published games are generally solid at worst, excellent at best. Ports by other publishers are hit and miss (according to some reviews I’ve read).
I’ve personally played:
- Super Mario World
- Yoshi’s Island
- Zelda; a Link to the Past
- Final Fantasy IV
The Nintendo ports are all great, though the sound isn’t quite as good as the SNES originals. Nintendo also “enhanced” these ports by adding voices to Mario and Link (think New Super Mario Bros and Ocarina of Time). While by no means a deal breaker, the voices feel a little out of place and can get annoying.
Final Fantasy IV is a bit more than a straight port; they also added an extra dungeon, plus they let you choose your final party, which can really alter the end game. It’s got a couple of glitches too, though it’s a pretty good port overall.
Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown

OfflineI find the sound inferior and the graphics are ok if played on the original GBA. You will hear occasional distortion on almost all of the Nintendo first party ports. It’s kind of like a CD skipping. It isn’t rampant but you will notice it from time to time. Also as Mongunzoo said, they added alot more sound effects which weren’t really necessary. All in all, they’re excellent on the go versions of your favorite SNES titles with a few caveats.

OfflineDonkey Kong is ok on the GBA the minigames they added are fun and the new save system makes it easier for someone who is new at Donkey Kong but without mode 7 the backgrounds may be more colorful but they lack the realistic looking 3D of the original. The downside is they’re rare because of Rare being part of Microsoft now, this caused
Rare’s games on the portables to be in short productions.
