Perhaps a smidge off topic, but I found one of my favorite games of all time at the flea market, Tecmo Super Bowl (NES), for $1. Problem is, the battery seems to be messed up, because every time I refire up my Yobo (off-brand NES console), my season isn’t saved. So I’ve been playing one game at a time, instead of the four-or-more I would if I could save the season.

I’m sure the technology is different between NES and SNES carts, but I’m still curious about battery replacement. Masamune, please keep us posted on your practice and progress.

NES and SNES carts use the same kind of battery: CR2032. I’m doing a future article that will have a battery replacement portion. The article will include a lot of pictures, so maybe that can help you with the NES as well.

I just bought myself a beginner soldering kit. Im gonna try replacing the battery in my Sim City cartridge, and add a battery holder to avoid accidents with the battery. Gonna be interesting since i have never soldered before. Im planning on using this battery holder, it seems small enough to fit even with the biggest PCB’s hopefully.

You basically attach it with wires to the points on the PCB, otherwise a holder would build too much height. Ive yet to find a guide with a holder thats low profile enough to attach directly.

I type and read very literally and use no undertones. Thank you for trying to understand. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A.....r_syndrome

Crap. How difficult is it to replace these batteries? I can’t remember soldering anything in my life. I always watch others do it.

I actually ordered a different type of holder from china (much much cheaper than buying in sweden or europe) but once they get there, ill try replacing my battery in Sim City. I have also never soldered (except an iron rod statue back in 5th grade or something) so im totally green too, so my experiences should apply well to you as well greg. Ill reply here once they get here and the job has been done. Watching several videos and reading tutorials and guides have led me to believe its super easy. No tiny contact points, and a lot of free space from different tracers etc so it would be a feat to muck it up i think. Just gotta make a note on positive and negative.

I haven’t done it myself yet either, but based of my research, it doesn’t seem like a terribly difficult thing to do. I’ll let you and everyone else know once I publish my article on it.

I have a copy of The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang that I’m excited to play. Only problem is the battery doesn’t work. I’m sure my research will not help only me, but anyone else who comes across the article in the future.

Yeah, you’re right, there are a lot of articles and forum posts out there on how to change batteries. However I do like the level of detail the articles here at SNES Hub offer.

And for whatever reason someone stumbles upon the article here instead of Youtube or another site, they will be reading an article of high quality.

ok, mourn my Sim City pcb… i had a droplet end up on some traces and i was unable to get it out of there with my solder pump cleanly. So now i have all kinds of fun graphical glitches when i try to start the game… Anywho, i did another try and it went a little better. Its not too pretty, but i managed to not damage anything, and Madden 98 now has the battery holder i purchased on ebay, with a new battery. And the save seems to hold. I would recommend that holder btw, it doesnt raise more than the original battery, and allows for easy battery change down the road.

I seriously need to practice this thing tho, i had a hard time heating up the contact area before applying the solder, and i ended up with rather matte finish, than more shiny like you should.. But it works.

Sorry to hear that. I’m going to start practicing soon as well as I bought a sports game to practice on. I’m using this battery holder. I knew it wouldn’t fit directly on the board before purchasing, but I couldn’t find a better solution. I’ll make it work though.

I might get tempted one day to try the batteries you bought from Hong Kong after my current stash is used up.

Thanks. Yeah definetly use the battery holder i linked to. mmmonkey.co.uk has a guide for them too. I used his updated version using the current battery’s tab as a solder point. Just remove the tiny plastic tabs on the back of the holder and its almost made for this purpose. Very low profile and fits great insite the shell. Ill perfect my soldering technique and then ill do it on all my battery carts.

Seems ive forgotten to show the new battery holders actually, whilst mmmonkey shows and links to them, this is the seller he and i bought them from. Got here in less than a week from Taiwan. http://www.ebay.com/itm/140396…..1497.l2649 He carries larger quantities, and many other components too.

If anyone feels uncomfortable changing a battery, there are lots of game stores that will replace a battery for a reasonable price. I’ve only had the battery die in one game, so far.  I took it to the small game store where I purchased it and they replaced it for free.  They told me if I had any other games with batteries that needed to be replaced, they would do it for $5.  The only drawback is you’ll probably have to wait for a few days, but I like waiting over messing up a special game that isn’t being produced anymore.

Currently looking for the following SNES games:

Chrono Trigger

EarthBound

Final Fantasy II (Final Fantasy IV)

Secret of Mana

Illusion of Gaia

Super Castlevania IV

Super Mario RPG

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

 Zombies Ate My Neighbors

TMNT IV

Contra III
