Has anyone tried an Ascii Pad? It’s a generic Super Nintendo controller with additional functions. I’ve read that it was a pretty good alternative to the original controller. I would very much like to know what you guys think about this pad. Is it worth it?

I haven’t tried that controller. I’ve always stuck with the regular one since it’s so good.

If there is anyone out there reading this that has actually used it, can you chime in?

Not used that particular model but as 3rd-party control pads go, Antarch, that looks quite good if I’m honest, a lot better than some you could find. Ascii are actually one of my favorite companies from the SNES days in terms of software but they also came out with numerous innovative control pads.

Here are a couple; the Ascii Grip Pad that’s fairly well known, and the not-so-well-known Super Ascii Stick L5. Notice the A, B, X, Y buttons reflected on the underside of the L5, try getting a good grip on that!

What kind of game would require such pads? An RPG maybe? I can’t picture myself ever using these.. it doesn’t seem very comfortable, no?

The Grip I could play something like a point n click, strategy rpg or a turn-based game but the latter looks impossible to be comfortable with.

The ASCII pad is my main SNES pad, actually. I rarely, if ever, use the turbo functions. I just like the the way it fits in my hand (and the construction quality is as good as an original). Solid controller!

I kind of have a thing for collecting ASCII peripherals. I have that silly little one-handed controller (the one for the PSX, too), their six face button fighter pad, the SNES advantage, and others I can’t recall right now.
