R Type III is my favourite shooter on the system, though to be fair, I’ve never played Space Megaforce or Parodius.
There is still some slowdown, but its very minor and only happens occasionally. It’s about 1000 times better then Super R-Type in that regard. The game also has some great graphical effects (Mode 7, etc.)
What I like the best about the game is the way it balances crushing difficulty with overall fairness and playability. The game is HARD, but there are unlimited continues and you always continue from your last checkpoint. Each checkpoint lets you get powered up pretty quickly too, so the game is tough but fair and keeps you coming back for more.
I’ll save the rest for my full review!
Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown

I haven’t been playing anything long term lately but I did just start a game of Yoshi’s Island last night for the heck of it. And I did do a single session 100% playthrough of A Link to the Past to see how fast I could do it “blind”. And when I say blind I mean I know the game extremely well but I don’t have a speed runners mentality where I do things in a certain order or the best way to do each action as quick as possible. Incidentally, I did it in 3:22. Though I could probably do it a bit faster, I’m not particularly interested in speed running.
Playing with Power, Super Power!

What’s everyone been playing recently?
I’ve delved back into the SNES’ incredible games, platformers mainly. One afternoon last week I completed GS Mikami. I frustratingly died trying to do likewise with Psycho Dream but I intend on giving it another go. What I have enjoyed increasingly is playing through Akumajou Dracula XX (CastleVania: Vampires Kiss) as its challenging yet rewarding in a very positive way. It also has a superlative soundtrack!

Haven’t had a lot of time myself for gaming these days, so I tend to play games that offer short, quick bursts of fun instead of games with long, continuous quests.
With that in mind, the games I’ve been dabbling into are:
SNES
- Phalanx (starting to grow on me!)
- Wario’s Woods
- R-Type III
- Contra 3
Genesis
- Bio-Hazard Battle
- Quackshot
Dreamcast
- Chu Chu Rocket
- Street Fighter Alpha 3
PS3
- 3D Dot Game Heroes
I know the list above seems like a lot, but it encompasses what I’ve been playing over the last several weeks.

I still find it hard to believe that a narrative can be so divorced from probability when it comes to Ghost. I know its a shooter, but son of a bitch, If you are going to make South America the bad guy, at least crack a fucking book on the continent to see how to do it i.e NOT a united federation. Read about the regional conflicts such as The War Of The Triple Alliance (To The bitter End is one of the finest military studies I have ever had the pleasure of reading, and does a fantastic job of illustrating why a “federation” like Ghost envisions is a practical impossibility.) Also there’s a fucking jungle that covers over half of the continent, with quite a bit of the rest being rocky coastline. Makes it hard to envision a world power scenario lol.
Lazy-ass storytelling at it’s finest. Not that I think that there should be much story in a game, mind you, but if you’re going to do it, at least be competent at it. My brain should not rebel at the stupidity of what they are proposing…

Never had you pegged for a CoD player Mong. I’m not much of an FPS guy. However, I would hold the CoD series to the same standard of historical and scientific accuracy as I would for a big budget, mass market Hollywood action move, which is to say no standard at all really. They could certainly have done more research into the history of the region when developing the game, but how many of the millions of players would really appreciate it?

I would say that not many would appreciate it, as your typical customer does not appreciate the historical accuracy of a work like Moby Dick, either. But the fact is that you can do just as much damage by undershooting expectations as you can by spending too much research. COD does not need to be an accurate accounting of true future possibilities, that is not what I am asking. Just don’t be stupid.
Customers are not stupid, and while stupidity can fly under the radar, when you experience a stupid story even people who don’t know their South American history will have a feeling like “something’s off, Something doesn’t feel right about this scenario.”
Thats the bullshit alarm going off in your head, and whether it’s Twain or Miyamoto writing the story, that’s bad. It is why writing has been bad all across the board as of late, not just games.

There’d be a lot of legal / licensing issues and other challenges to overcome before this could ever see the light of day. Lego games are aimed at kids, while CoD games are aimed at adults, plus CoD is owned by Activision, while the Lego games are published by Warner Bros.
That said, I really like the idea of a Lego-based first person shooter. It would be great if it had fully destructible environments, with exploding lego pieces flying everywhere. A level editor seems like a no brainer for this type of game too.

Playing a lot of GTA V myself right now.
I have Asperger's Syndrome, which means i can come across as rigid and overly argumentative. Please try and look past this and contact me if you have a problem with what/how i type. I type and read very literally and use no undertones. Thank you for trying to understand. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A.....r_syndrome

Mr. Saturn
I also started playing Link to the Past again after several years. No way I can beat this at 3.22 (!) But maybe I look under every pot and bush for coins/hearts Fantastic game to play again on the Snes. Last time I played it on the system must have been in ’95. Plan is to finish it by the end of this year And after this gem I will start Ocarina of Time on the n64. Curious to see how this game holds up today being the first 3d Zelda…
Looking forward to the Holliday’s!
