OfflineSega CD was not what started Sega’s exit from the hardware business. The poor cooperation between Sega Japan and Sega USA was. 32x vs Saturn really. The cd addon had nothing to do with that. They also apparently did not help developers out with good enough development tools and documentation for the saturn, which didnt help to solidify trusting their own hardware.
Both the CD and 32x addons did add to the genesis/megadrive, but were not fully utlilized because of this distrust they themselves helped to establish. Poor management decisions were their downfall, not poor hardware.
As for the snes cd addon, i wouldve liked to have seen it.

You are right, those are all large, contributing factors to the decline of Sega.
However, the failure of the Sega CD cannot be overlooked. It was an expensive piece of hardware that didn’t bring much to the table (Lunar games not withstanding). The 32X was even worse. By the time the Saturn rolled around, people were very upset at having spent so much money on essentially useless add-ons.
Sega would have been in a much stronger position had they focused on the Genesis until the Saturn was ready.
Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown

OfflineTo be honest, if rumoured sales of 2/3 of all genesis/megadrive machines had a cd coupled with it, i dont think of that as a failure. But again, thats only what ive caught while reading posts from other people across the forums. Addons are usually not close to the same numbers as the system itself in sales. So if it did indeed sell 2/3 of genesis/megadrives sold, thats great for an addon.
As for games, there are more games for the cd addon than the lunar games that are worth getting and takes more advantage of the system than just storage space. But yes, the addon was not fully utilized, and even less so was the 32x which reportedly has a lot to offer soundwise technically, which apparently no developer really considered.
I stick with that poor management decisions, and an inability for Sega Japan and Sega USA to get along is the major culprit, not the hardware itself.
