OfflineI’ve been reading quite a few of Mongunzoo’s posts about how the gaming industry has stopped listening to their customers and have started to make the games they want to make (ie making 3D instead of 2D).
This got me thinking back to my own experiences in 1995. I remember when Chrono Trigger and Yoshi’s Island came out in 1995, I was absolutely blown away. Here were two fantastic games for my SNES, a system that just kept getting better. Yet the gaming press was already starting to write-off the SNES and Genesis and were filled with nothing but coverage for the newly released PS1 / Saturn.
I vividly remember not wanting my SNES to become obsolete and really wishing we could just keep getting more great games like Chrono Trigger.
I’ll admit, part of this had to do with the fact that I was young and couldn’t yet afford the fancy new 3D machines. But a big part of this was me being sufficiently happy with the quality of game being released for the SNES / Genesis and being disappointed that the industry was leaving them behind.
Did anyone else feel this way at the time?

OfflineWhen I was a kid, and even today, I didn’t like change I liked my SNES and felt no need for a N64 or a PS1, but as I got older I realized they were never going to make new SNES games so I had to get a N64. Had they never stopped making SNES games I might have never purchased a new video game system.

OfflineOutside of the traditional gamer demographics you will find that this is a common opinion. It is so funny how companies think that they can control their own destiny.
In time the game industry will offer us the starkest lesson in what happens when you fight the market since the decline of print news.

OfflineMong, I remember vividly that when the industry was transitioning from NES to SNES, most parents had no idea why they should buy a SNES because they “already had a Nintendo”.
David, there’s a ton of great titles and many are hard to find which makes the system fun to collect for. Sadly for me, my collection peaked in the mid-90’s when I had all the Squaresoft games (except Breath of Fire, which is kind of a technicality), Super Metroid and a lot of other great hits. I sold most, to “upgrade” to the N64, leaving me with the tiny collection I have today.

Well for me I was highly excited for the Playstation when it was near release. I drooled at the photo-realistic pictures and couldn’t believe gaming could achieve that sort of graphical ability. I was ready to drop all my Super Nintendo and Genesis stuff to get this Playstation system.
I coincidentally did sell almost all of my Super Nintendo and Genesis things to Funcoland to help me pay for the Playstation in 1996.
I bought a Neo-Geo AES in 1995 for about $160 with two games, Fatal Fury and Samurai Shodown. I traded that for a Dreamcast in 1999.
Man, I wish I could have all those things back now. Oh well, live and learn.
Now that I have some perspective on things, I believe I did enjoy the Super NES more than the other systems, and certainly now, but back then I wanted the latest and greatest so to speak.
