We all know the SNES has an incredible library. One of the reasons its library stands out so much compared to other post-SNES Nintendo systems is because of its stellar third party support.
In fact, third party developers were responsible for some of the system’s best games.
Which third party developer do you feel was the best?
Personally, I would have to give the nod to Capcom. Capcom is responsible for some of the system’s all-time greats (Mega Man X series). They also delivered great games in multiple genres (action, platforming , fighting, beat ’em up, RPG) whereas many third party developers excelled only at a single genre (Konami = action, Squaresoft = RPG).
Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown

OfflineBreath Of Fire 2, Final Fight 3, Street Fighter 2 (which was a huge deal for SNES when it came out, perhaps bigger than any release excluding Donkey Kong Country) Mega Man X,……
I could go on and on about what this company meant for the SNES and gaming in genera, but I really don’t need to.

Having the original Street Fighter 2 as a timed exclusive was HUGE for the SNES. The game feels archaic now, but it’s all anyone was talking about in ’92.
If by some miracle Sega managed to get this game as an exclusive, they may have been able to put the SNES down for good by gaining a PS1 vs. N64 style lead over the SNES.

OfflineDespite those big names you mentioned Mong, I would say their less celebrated titles are equally if not more important than their mega hits.
Games like Great Circus Mystery, Goof Troop, Magic Sword and X-Men. These games aren’t going to make anyone’s Top 10 list but they’re all solid, well-made games.
Capcom gave the SNES both quality AND quantity. The latter is arguably more important in making a system a success.

OfflineWithout a doubt! This game caused a massive hardware spike that brought the SNES neck and neck with the Genesis, and they did not gain a definitive lead until Donkey Kong Country.
Facts that are often forgotten by game journalists today.

OfflineAbsolutely! While I tend to focus more on the megahits (It’s the business in me lol!) it is the Gems that really give a system it’s personality. Games like Demon’s Crest and The Disney games really show the depth of the system, finally gaining some appreciation that only time can give.

Offline< Voted for Konami as I think their games are imaginative, fun, engaging and ooze quality. Always considered Konami and Capcom to be very solid and reliable. Square and Enix were definitely better as separate companies and they delivered some great games during the SNES’s life. I also have a soft spot for lesser known companies KSS and Natsume so a big up to those as well.
This post kinda makes me sad because Nintendo can only wish they have this kind of 3rd party support for their console systems these days …
I voted for Squaresoft b/c when I think about the Super Nintendo, my first thoughts are of Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy III, Super Mario RPG, Secret of Evermore. basically Square RPGs. Those games enthralled my imagination in my youth that was second only to Nintendo released games.

OfflineEA is certainly not my favourite, I was simply trying to be inclusive in the poll. EA was an important developer in the era, though I’d argue EA did more for the Genesis then the SNES.
You make a great point about Natsume; can’t believe I forgot to include them. Wild Guns, Harvest Moon and Ninja Warriors earn them a spot in the best developer conversation. They’re perhaps the best developer of hidden gems / expensive collector’s items!

OfflineHuh? No I didn’t mean to imply that EA shouldn’t be on the list, though I’d agree with you that they probably contributed more to the Genesis library than to the SNES’. No what I meant was you typed them as “Electronic Ars”
I don’t think you can edit those options once they are submitted though it makes me smile seeing it up there.
Natsume are quite easy to just pass by until you see what they did, those games you mention there are a good reason why I like them.

These games may not make up anyone’s top 10 list for the simple fact that many gamers don’t know about them. Perhaps The Great Circus Mystery and X-men might make an individual’s top list if they had more publicity.
That’s another reason why I wanted to create this site. Hidden gems like these can finally get their just due.

OfflineI voted Squaresoft. However I’m basing it more off the Super Famicom/SNES platform overall. This was the golden era for RPG’s & nobody did it better back then than Squaresoft. Sadly half of them never came to the U.S. If I had to go just SNES, I would pick Capcom. They delivered such a wide variety of great games back then.
Not a fanboy, just a gamer...every system has its gems!!
