I have this old tribal tattoo from my teenage years that I’m seriously embarrassed of now. I’m planning a trip to LA soon and thinking about finally getting it covered up. I’ve heard horror stories about cover-ups looking worse than the original. How do I even start looking for a good artist out there? What styles actually work for hiding old ink without it showing through?

Cover-ups are tricky, but totally doable with the right artist. The main rule is dark covers light, so you need to be realistic about the new design. Los Angeles has some incredible artists who specialize in this. Be honest with yourself about the old tattoo’s density. If it’s really dark and solid, don’t expect to cover it with something light and airy like watercolor. Biomechanics, blackwork, or Japanese styles are your best friends here.
