An article from Kotaku: http://kotaku.com/5941222/repo…..od-as-gone

Luke Plunkett

According to a report on Variety, G4 – one of the only TV stations in the world with a “geek” mandate – will be “rebranded” early next year, resulting in a change of focus and possibly a change of name as well.

In other words, it’ll be an almost entirely new/different channel.

NBCU, the station’s owners, are reportedly looking at turning it into a TV version of GQ, ditching the nerd focus in favour of something more “modern male”.

Beginning in 2002 as a purely video game-oriented channel, G4 slowly evolved into a more general “young male tech/geek/game” site, with its most popular shows at the moment being Attack of the Show! – which in recent years lost both its popular hosts, Kevin Pereira and Olivia Munn – and American Ninja Warrior.

There’s no details on just what a “modern male” rebranding would entail, but I’d bet you could expect a lot more coverage of micro-breweries, indie bands, expensive loafers and designer laptop bags.

Clarification: Variety‘s report does also indicate that “The guy-centric net is mulling a more sophisticated look while remaining true to its tech and vid game roots.” So video games may still have a home there, though in what seems like a very different, less geek-targeted context.

Thoughts?

There.  NOW G4 is dead.  I really cannot say that I am surprised.  Not when the game programming was losing to fucking Cops Reruns….  That’s low.

Let us see if it morphs into something legitimate for male interests, or if it just becomes another insulting effort ala Spike TV.

I knew this was coming, but I’m still shocked by the announcement. Hopefully one day we will get a real video game channel.

In reality we already do, youtube. And so far its free. With adblocks you wont even have to suffer advertisement.

Yeah, YouTube is probably the closest we are ever going to get to a real VideoGame network.  That’s not really a bad thing, either with shows like 16-bit gems and HVGN.  Lots of great lets play as well.

I think the gaming community, as far as people putting material on there to show, not the commentators (for the most part, since they are idiots), on youtube is a great thing. Much better than any corporation can put together. As the cliché says, By fans, for fans. Production value differs, presentation differs and experience differs, which makes it available to just about everyone. And most smaller “shows” actually listen to their fans, and keep part of the comments that are constructive.

My favourite show, ReplayRetro is from what i understand just this guy called Matt from England. He put in great effort and energy into his first seasons. He sadly burned out and has changed the formula for his latest productions, but that just shows he is human and wants to have fun doing his shows, and not see it as work. And thats what im all about. Life isnt about working, life isnt about pleasing corporation. Life is about living and sharing, contributing what you can to enrich the lives of others, even if that is creating an amateur show on youtube, or similar services. I do not mourn videogame shows on tv going away. Granted we’ve never really had any in sweden so they havent been easily accessible to me, but with the internet readily available even in the more distant parts where games are relevant, the internet is the common person’s chance to replace these network giant’s mediocre shows.

There is so many shows out there, but i chose to pimp out ReplayRetro because its my favourite one. My next favourite one is CGR, but you all should already know Mark’s show by now.

I guess you guys are right; there’s Youtube. I still kinda like the idea of a video game TV channel though…
