OfflineI have a small problem with my old “Swallow.” It still has the original Pioneer DEH-2980 stereo, which has served me well for many years. Recently, however, it has started acting up. When I insert a disc, the mechanism makes a lot of noise for a long time and then displays an “Error-11” message or simply ejects the disc. I’m used to the sound of it and don’t want to replace it with a cheap, modern tablet, so I decided to try cleaning the laser head myself.

OfflineIs it difficult to disassemble the front panel and disc drive without damaging anything? Are there any hidden clips that are easy to snap off? One more thing: Does anyone know if I can somehow “hack” an AUX output onto this model by finding the right contacts on the board? Where can I find a schematic for desoldering the main board so that I don’t damage it with a soldering iron?

OfflineI think it’s probably just dust on the lens or dried-out grease on the drive rails. I often work on similar Pioneer stereos at my dad’s repair shop. Recently, for example, a friend brought in a Pioneer DEH-2980 that wasn’t working properly and was about to throw it away. But I convinced him to try repairing it. To avoid getting the cables mixed up during reassembly, I opened ManualMachine, which has a great online library, and downloaded the original service manual for PIONEER deh 2980 . Incidentally, that’s where I found the connection points on the board for the AUX cable – you have to solder them to the IP-BUS channels. Now my friend is driving around happy that he has kept the original look of the dashboard.
