The Super Nintendo offered many sports games, and hockey represents a fair portion of them. What NHL Stanley Cup offered was distinct visual presentation and unique camera angles utilizing Mode 7. See the review here.

I have nothing but bad memories of this game. My brother got it for Christmas the year it came out (we were both wowed by the commercials) and neither of us had any fun with it. The biggest problem; it was WAY too hard to score. Sure, you can argue this was more realistic, but it ultimately wasn’t fun.
Worse still, this game came out the same year as NHL ’94; the best hockey game of all time (the Genesis version). By comparison, Stanley Cup was severely lacking. It did help me discover NHL ’94 though, a game I still play to this day. NHL ’94 is much easier to score in, but scoring still takes skill. Ultimately, I feel like I am in control of my team when I play NHL ’94, whereas I feel like I am just getting lucky when I score in Stanley Cup.
If you’re looking for a fun “Mode 7” sports game, I recommend NCAA Basketball over this.

honestly I think it’s just hockey as a sport in general. I have never seen a great hockey game on any console ever. the most fun were the adaptations that were very over the top and I think they were on xbox.
Have you played Ice Hockey or Blades of Steel on the NES or NHL ’94 on the Genesis?
These are all great hockey games.
If you like over the top, you might also enjoy Mutant League Hockey on the Genesis.
