The Super Nintendo has a surprising variety of shmups to play if you do some digging. However most shooters for the system are noted for their slowdown. Perhaps it couldn’t be helped, but as it stands are there any shmups besides Star Fox and U.N. Squadron worth playing? Read the review for the SNES entry into the R-Type series here.

There are a ton of Awesome Shootemups for the SNES.

-Pop’N Twinbee

-Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie

-The Three Parodius Games

-Axelay

-U.N Squadron

-SFC Version of Biometal

-R-Type 3

-Space Megaforce

-StarFox

-Flying Hero

That is not even counting the ones I have yet to own and play like Spriggan-Powered and countless others that may be just as good.

I’d add Gradius III to the list of great SNES shmups (though its arguably the worst culprit for the SNES’ infamous shmup slowdown).

SNES has a decent shmup library; probably better than most folks give it credit for. It has a pretty large library too, considering the SNES launched towards the tail end of the shmup’s heyday (shmups fell out of favour in the early ’90’s).

Unfortunately, shmup is one of the few genres where the SNES is noticeably behind its competitors.  SNES also never got a game from arguably the best shmup developer of the time; Toaplan.

Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown
