What’s everyone’s best on SMK’s Time Trial’s. Best Lap and Overall Times wanted. I’m starting to play this again and would like to have a go at besting some of the forums own. I’m just beginning from scratch again after a year or so from last playing it but I’m starting to race competitively against the comp opponents so I’ll add some my own when I think it’s a worthwhile challenge. Put the course name(s) and whatever lap time/overall time you managed for each course.

Have you played the original recently? To me, it holds up very well. In some ways, it is better then its sequels. Most notably, the balance of items is a lot more fair (lightning bolts are RARE) to someone in first place.
The biggest problem with the game (and with F-Zero too) is that everything is FLAT!
Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown

I think the original holds up very well. If you don’t like flat racing games then the SNES library of racers will disappoint you as it’s pretty much what it can offer whilst creating the illusion of depth with parallax scrolling and clever use of mode 7. Still while you say the balance of items is altogether fairer I would go further and say the whole experience is more reliant on driving skill than luck with items.
Masa I feel the complete opposite. I respect your difference in opinion but I can say I found the N64 one to be rather dated (compared to when I used to play it a lot in the late ’90s) the last time I retried it, and I gave it some decent game time to be fair but the gameplay seems from the off to lack depth. I don’t like the A.I. at all and although I give it high praise for having some of the best designed tracks like Sherbet Land, Royal Raceway, Frappe Snowland, Yoshi Valley and Banshee Boardwalk. Kalimari Desert on the other hand should not even be on the game. Playing the SNES one again, it takes a little time and it’s the most difficult to master but the sense of fulfillment in the progression you make and the different styles of the characters you pick make it a real winner. Whilst the Wii one is possibly the easiest to get into the competitiveness and enjoyment of the races is upheld very well. Double Dash introduces the two-man team combo and alternative character attributes and vehicles. Whilst some of the tracks on DD are not that good it does have some excellent ones (though strangely the Wii MK omits the best DD ones like Baby Park, Daisy Cruiser, Yoshi Circuit or Dino Dino Jungle in lieu of possibly the worst ones Peach Beach & DK Mountain?!). Having never played a handheld version this is my line of Mario Kart taking into account overall fun, challenge, track design, characters, computer A.I., single-player and multi-player replayability. It’s close between all of them but here are my final standings…
Super MK > MK Wii > MK Double Dash > MK 64

You’re absolutely right Ghost, SMK is the game in the series that rewards driver skill the most. All other games punish the first place driver and reward those who are losing to varying degrees. It certainly keeps things exciting, though balance becomes very important when these “equalizing” measures are implemented.
I’m surprised you’ve placed MK64 so low; many people consider it to be the best.
One of the neat things about the Mario Kart games is that there is no real consensus as to which game(s) in the series is best.

So no one actually posted any top times since April? haha
I just started playing it 2 days ago after picking up a copy at the flea market.
The game is so intense! I love how it’s rewarding to the player who can drive well and how the game doesn’t forgive if you have a bad crash. I mean, you can be in 1st place the whole race and then crash and end up being in 5th place 3 seconds later!
I’d like to see some of your top times before posting mine haha!

Great stuff Antarch. Mario Circuit 2 is one of my favourite tracks, its got some nice corners and you can hit that four-pipe corner pretty hard after the jump/boost near the finish line.
I want in on this too so I went to get my SMK cartridge and (gasp) its gone – just the box and manual. I must of lent it out or left it somewhere. S**t happens but I will find that cart again and when I do hopefully the times I made are still on it.
