Rather than send Masamune a PM, I thought I’d open up a discussion of legal matters that may arise when writing for the site. There is specific direction on the submissions guidelines regarding citations, but not concerning copywrite.

In collecting screen shots for my Lion King review I nearly used pictures from the film I found online for my written section. Then I thought, “wait, what if this is a copywrite infringement?” I think more than anything the fact that it’s a Disney movie gave me pause.

In the end, I suppose we can go with whatever Masamune is comfortable with. I trust his judgement. And by the way, Masa, feel free to keep this forum up, to add further direction in the submissions guidelines, or whatever.

There is something in the law called “fair use”, which gives people certain freedoms when using copyrighted works. You can read about it here.

For critique and educational purposes, I think we are in the clear here.
