So earlier today, I noticed that there’s a little blue icon below our usernames. I put my mouse over it and it said it was cubepoints. What’s the cubepoint system? What do cubepoints do?

Cubespoints is a point system used for contests, rewards, stuff like that.

SNES Hub is fast approaching its one year anniversary. In an attempt to bring more users to this forum, I’m going to hold a contest. The cubepoints will tabulate the scores and the top 3 scorers will win a prize.

I’m still ironing out the details of this, but when everything is set up I’ll post an announcement of the contest details. In the meanwhile, what would be some good prizes for this contest? I was thinking maybe the Hyrule Historia book for one. But most people who want that book may have already ordered one.

What are other people’s opinions on possible prizes?

Expensive games perhaps? laugh I could do with an English PAL copy of Harvest Moon….

No I like the sound of both suggestions to be fair. Games are always welcome but I can tell you now I won’t be ordering that Hyrule book.

Yeah, I gotta concur.  On one hand I can see the appeal of a “coherent” Timeline, but To me the fun has always been debating and discussing timeline theories.  With the advent of the “official” Timeline, there is no longer a mystery to explore, and so Boredom ensues.  It also limits the directions that can be gone in.

That said, I no longer have a dog in the Zelda fight anymore.  It is a dead franchise to me at this point, so I find it fitting that my pal Aonuma has shoved all the games I loved into a “Failed” timeline.  Hopefully that means they will avoid the puzzle-and-PC adventure game treatment the rest of the series has endured since he came to prominence.

Now Dark Souls with a sword-and shield build in a leather tunic, the addition of a bow and firebombs, and the occasional weapon for moving forward?

THATS my new Zelda!

Well the book is actually fantastic. The quality of the cover and pages is top notch. It’s large like a college text book. Now the only part that is iffy is the timeline. It’s too convoluted and silly. But the other parts are excellent. I certainly enjoyed it.

Well I’ll keep thinking of other ideas for the three prizes. If you guys have other ideas, keep them coming.

Yes, it is rather silly.

My interpretation is that there WAS no coherent story.  Since the game was called the LEGEND of Zelda, I often thought that each individual game was a retelling of the same story with differences based on the storyteller.

But this whole Three Timeline thing is pretty amateurish.  And when you imply that those creepy manheaded chickens were Hyrules equivalent to Lord of the Ring’s Elves, it starts to get downright insulting…

As for prizes, How about SUPER PLAY ISSUES, or Old Nintendo Power Players Guides?  Those are getting harder and harder to come by in good condition, and they were written at a time when the guides felt like expansions of the game universe.  An example would be the “Lore” in the ALTTP Guide.  (and by lore, I mean nuggets of info that expand what we know about Hyrulian Civilization without ruining the fun of imagination)

Seriously good stuff.

Keep in mind books and magazines are stupid expensive to ship internationally. A forum-friend over at 3DO Zero paid $12 to ship me a Gameinformer magazine back in december. That was in a big envelope with cardboard slabs to protect it during shipping. USPS raised some, if not all, their prices recently as well. A flat rate priority box large enoughf or a single boxed game is now $24, used to be 17. Since you guys are from the US, this is relevant info to you, considering we are many non-US members on this forum. A loose game in a bubblewrap envelope should still be fairly cheap though.

Just something to consider when talking prizes you wanna send out for competitions or contests.

Mongunzoo, I really like your theory about all the Legend of Zelda games being the same story told by different people. That’s much better than the official timeline we’ve got now.

As for the prizes, not matter what I decide, they will have to be enticing enough for new members to sign up and post on the forums in order to compete for them.

I’m still not completely sure about this. The potential for a strong forum community is here already I feel, perhaps not yet in numbers or even in members who post but the layout is quality and the members friendly. Will potential new members join purely for the prizes, are these the people we need to make this a strong forum, can we not get fellow gamers, enthusiasts or collectors to grace this forum otherwise, will these people become disillusioned and leave if they don’t win ‘X’ after a certain period of time.

If I appear over-cynical I apologize but these are genuine questions. I’m all for contests and rewards, don’t get me wrong, but the strategy to implement them must be correct.

I believe a lot people will come to the site for the contest. I also believe 98% of those new people will leave after the contest has been decided.

The point of this contest is to attract those 2% who are genuinely interested in a site like this for the long term.

Just keep in mind. A new forum and community site for the old Snes will certainly take a long time to build.. People talk about the Snes everywhere across the web. One more fish in the pound makes no difference to most people. I believe if we keep building with articles and reviews, the conversationalists will come trickling in with time.. Come for the content, stay for the discussions so to speak.

I doubt Sega-16.com, our closest comparision in my mind, sprung out of the ground like a sunflower. Its an old site by now, but it has many active members, tech-savvy people etc to make the site complete. They do reviews, articles, roundtables etc on a regular basis. Its easy to be discouraged if “your own” site doesnt flourish quickly, and i dont want to be in Masamune’s shoes, but i do believe in patience and quality over quantity (there are some outright arses on sega-16 ive had to put on ignore!), so even if im disapointed when our forum has not had any new input, be it article, review or forum thread, for a couple of days, i know that when people do, its ment for our community, and we all appreciate it even if its not up our alley. Like the cooking thread, its not for me, but other people have already responded to it, and thats how you build a forum. Slow, easy and with diversity and quality.

Both you grimm and Ghostsweeper make some great points. It’s been almost a year now and the activity on this forum isn’t quite what I had hoped in 12 months. I feel I need to do something to make a big splash in order to grab the attention of people who hadn’t heard of this site yet. A contest sounds like the perfect thing to stir things up. Once people find out what the prizes are, people will tell their friends and those people will tell their friends. At least the word about this site will spread.

You know what the real problem is? I started this site in 2012. I should have started it in 2000 instead. We have a whole lot of old blood sites that make the popularity of this site an uphill battle.

Well I’ve decided what the 3 prizes are going to be. They all should be desirable for a lot of folks. I won’t reveal what they are until next Tuesday.

It’s a great place, and what I always wanted out of an SNES community.  You couldn’t ask for a better group of people.

Aonuma may not have been the best thing to happen to Zelda, but he’s still responsible for what I consider to be the best Zelda overall; Majora’s Mask

Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown

I can’t say that that is the best Zelda, but I will say it is in my top 5. I think Ocarina of Time is overrated and I think link to the past is the best. I loved MM though!

you know, Funny thing, that…..

Actually the guy who did Links awakening teamed with Aonuma for that one.  That explains the unique concept.  I DID enjoy MM.
