OfflineNeither. You review the game as it is by itself. If you think its a great game, you give it 5 stars, if it sucks then you give it 1 star. The point is to review it without doing what you just mentioned, mixing it up with “at the time”, relative to the entire library or compare it with todays game. Its really just as simple as scoring it as you see it. I know that Masamune has set up that you should be objective etc.. But you never can be, since its YOU who are reviewing a game and its YOUR opinions that you write down in that review. However, you should make your opinions from an objective standpoint. If you hate all mario games by principle for example, maybe you shouldnt review mario games. Its about being objective with subjectivity if that makes any sense.. Dont let other reviews colour your own etc..
Check out my review for Street Fighter 2 Turbo, where i start off by saying im reviewing the game on its own merits, and will not compare it with all the other millions of street fighter versions there are out there, from yesteryear to present. Thats how i chose to begin my review, and Masamune approved it, so it aparently followed objectivity from a subjective point of view.
If you read most reviews on this site you will see what i mean. Most ive read (i havent read them all) talk about the game itself from a timeless perspective. You review the game as it stands, by itself, and you get a more honest review. A game that was great 15 years ago may not get as much hype or high scores today, simply because of technology advancements etc.. But a game can also be as great today as 15 years ago, because its still appreciated today. If you are thinking of writing a review, thats great, and you should do it. Just try to score it from how you think of it at the time you review it basically. Not your childhood memories, or compare it to modern games of the same genre, at least thats my advice. Take it for what it is and good luck.

OfflineThanks for the perspective.
I’m working on a review of Final Fight, which is a fun game even today. That said, it’s a “bad” port of the arcade version and in 2013, there are a lot of ways to play better ports / the original arcade version that weren’t available when the game was released in 1991.
Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown

OfflineIn that case, i could advice you to mention the arcade original differences as trivia more than a comparision. Since the only real home console you can compare with arcade hardware at the time was and still is the neo geo. I never like when people compare arcade originals with home releases, however accurate they may be. Its not a fair comparision. Just write your impressions with the game as you find it today and i think you will do great. Looking forward to read it.

OfflineIn the case of Final Fight, the differences with the arcade version aren’t all cosmetic, there were certain things left out that the SNES could handle (2-player support, Guy, etc.).
Anyways, thanks again for the advice. I’ll save the rest for the review
