Here is the new, more official thread for the SNES Hub’s Top-200 list, this ambitious project we’ve been mulling over for a while now. Here’s the information we have so far concerning this project, if I understand it all well enough:
As of December 19, 2014, the online poll created to aid this project lists 310 games. 195 of them are listed among the voting options, a combination of the games listed in Mongunzoo’s “150 Must-Play SNES Experiences” thread and additional contributions by us. The other 115 are candidates written in by participating voters.
The final results will appear on January 17, when the poll closes, and I will have them prepared. If you wrote in a candidate, rest assured it will appear in the final results.
When we organize the final list, we’ll start by ranking the games by their votes and holding discussions about how to re-order them. We’ll effectively be comparing and contrasting our opinions with each others’ and with the voters’. I don’t believe we have a venue for these discussions yet.
Upon the completion of the final list, each of us can volunteer to accompany each selection with a passage about the game and what makes it worthwhile as a video game and a part of the SNES library. I’m going to make my passages between 100 and 200 words long, but you can create your own writing goals if you prefer.
We’ve shared links to the poll through the SNES Hub’s Facebook and Twitter accounts. Threads for it have also been started on GameFAQs, DigitalPress, NintendoAge, and the SNES subreddit.
The name of this thread is my own name for this list; we can talk about it as well.

Now that the poll has closed, I’ve looked over the results and what games have been suggested by the voters. From the suggestions of 192 participants, combined with our previous input from Mon’s thread, the poll has created a base list of 310 titles.
I’ve organized these names and their vote counts in a Google doc. Once we can organize the writing process for this list, I can share the link with everyone.

Well from my perspective, several things should be taken into consideration when ordering these games.
I do think the voter’s poll should have a small degree of influence on the order. Another thing is our individual experiences on these different games. For everyone who is going to participate in this, a discussion on the games we have played is called for. This may make it more clear on how to order them.
What’s truly important in a great game? Is it graphics, music, controls, fun fun factor, or all the above? Should a game with only so-so graphics but great in all other categories be placed above games that have all it all?
Should a game’s storyline have any effect on its ranking? There are some awesome games with very little story to speak of and vice versa.
Bottom-line is we have to lay it out what defines a top tier game and then go from there.
Anyone reading this I encourage you to jump in the discussion. The more the merrier.

Interesting thoughts. I think its very hard to distinguish a tier of games that have a numerical order. As Masa has stated, what makes a great game? Graphics, sound, gameplay, story, …. perhaps being slightly cynical you could also add popular opinion. Did anyone nominate a game ’cause they ‘know it’s good’ despite not ever playing it, easy to execute in an open poll and possibly distort the actual true statistics. For different folks it’s different strokes, I really enjoy Nobunaga’s Ambition but I know a large majority of SNES owners will think it’s crap. Generally you will find most people’s definition of top-tier is going to be different so making a clear distinction of which should be ordered where is not something Id envy doing. But I do think further discussions on games we’ve played are a great idea and would help a good deal.

First, a big thanks to John for all of his hard work in creating the poll and Google Doc. Secondly, I’m very excited to help put this list together.
Third, I’d like to suggest the following semi-scientific methodology for determining the order of the Top 200 list.
- We (any registered SNES Hub member interested in participating) rank each game (that we have played) according to the following:
- Presentation (i.e. graphics & sound) – 0 to 100
- Impact (i.e. how big of an impact did the game have on the industry, both then and now) – 0 to 100
- Fun Factor (i.e. how fun is the game to play today) – 0 to 100
- Poll Popularity (how many votes the game got in the poll) – 0 to 192
- Each game we’ve played should therefore have a score between 0 and 492. We average each of the SNES Hub User Scores for the games. We then rank the list according from lowest average score to highest average score. Only the Top 200 games make the final list
Let me know what you guys think of this. Very glad that we have GhostSweeper here for his superior Super Famicom knowledge. I’m hoping that Mongunzoo is able to contribute as well.

I think it’s a good foundation, though I don’t think the poll popularity portion should have more potential points than the other categories. As a matter of fact the poll portion should have lesser weight than the others.
My suggestion for the poll section of your methodology: Make its score the percentage it got in the poll. For example, Super Mario World got 71% of the vote. So if someone were to put Super Mario World in his rankings, the poll portion of the score would be 71.
This is assuming the write-in games have a percentage attached to them as well.
Everything else about your methodology would remain the same.
What do you guys think?

That’s a good compromise.
I really do think that a game’s overall popularity is a good indicator of its quality. For example, if there’s a game that I don’t care for, but that 50+ people voted for in the poll, who am I to say that its bad? That’s why I supported weighting the poll results a bit more heavily, but weighting it roughly equal to the other categories is fair enough.

Well John has the entire voter’s lists. There are more than 200 games. Using RushDawg’s rubric and with discussion, we would order the list and the top 200 games would make it.
But we need more people active on the forums. I need to put more energy into getting this site into the forefront. I still get the impression not a lot of people know about this site yet.

I had to do some searching to find this site a few months ago. I love it but I didn’t know about it before I joined. Maybe we could do some advertising. For example top 20 snes videos on youtube get thousands of views. If we put one on the youtube site with a link to this site and in the video let people if they join they can be part of the biggest top snes list yet they will join the discussion and site. Another option is we could put a few snes games on ebay for bid and in the description for the item say something like if you love the snes check out this website so we can get the word out.

To look at this from another angle, this list could be a great way to drive traffic to the site, especially if it’s well organized and put together. A top 200 list is easy to “sell” on other forums.
On the YouTube front, a well produced Top 200 video could be very popular and could stay popular over time (people are always searching for “top games” for any given system).
Just another take on ti.
