OfflineThe Dreamcast Junkyard recently put out a list of the Top 200 DC games of all time. The way they did this was by encouraging as many people as possible to vote on what games they felt deserved to make the Top 200. The games with the most votes made it to the top of the list. The process is described a little better in the link below:
http://segabits.com/blog/2013/…..ast-games/
We could maybe try this approach, though we’d need more than just the forum regulars to make a go of it. We’d have to promote the list on other sites like Game FAQs, Racketboy, Nintendo Age, etc. Could be a fun process though!

OfflineI created a poll that we can share with other people. Thanks for the advice, Rush!

OfflineThanks for making the poll!
I’ve made a post about it on the SNES sub reddit.
Perhaps we should make a post about it on the SNES Hub front page to make things more official looking? We should also pick an end date for the votes (some time in early to mid January?)

OfflineJan. 31st sounds good to me. Maybe even end it sooner? I think a post on the front page of SNES Hub explaining the rules / deadline would go a long way.
By the way, you can check out the Reddit post at:
Does anyone here have accounts at Nintendo Age, Racket Boy, etc.? Please spread the word there.

OfflineI like Jan 17th. Thanks for sharing at Nintendo Age. The poll has generated a decent amount of interest at the SNES sub reddit. Hopefully we can convince some of these voters to visit the site (I’d imagine most will want to check out the final list).
I’m pleased with how the poll is going too; some of the top games are getting over 80 votes. The big challenge will be for us to rank the games with few or no votes once the polls close.
Have you been getting a lot of write-ins?

OfflineThere is just one thing that bugs me with the way were doing this top 200.. The popular/well-known games will clearly have the highest number of votes. Does that make them the ”best” games? Not necessarily. A very good game could have went under the radar and still not be very well-known. Said game would then get a very poor score.
For example, we can forsee that games like Prehistorik Man, Ninja Warriors, etc. are still not very well-known even with all the ressources we have nowadays (Internet, …) but they are most definitely better than what their score will show by the end of the poll. Worst platformers than Prehistorik Man will surely have a better score than it because they were more popular, same goes with Ninja Warriors and similar beat ’em ups.
Popularity and sales aren’t always the best way to judge something’s quality.
EDIT:
Apart from that issue regarding some lack of subjectivity , I have found that it is possible to vote numerous times.
Also.. the fact that people can add games can also mess up the results of the poll. Let’s say I really like Lemmings 1 but it is not on the list when I register my votes. For some reason, I might not think of it at that time and so I would not have the reflex to add it to the list. Two weeks later, someone adds it. Had I seen it on the list when I answered the poll, I would have clicked it.. but I didn’t because I did not think of it then.
Adding new voting options DURING the duration of the poll WILL affect the results.

OfflineThe thing I had in mind with this poll, which I think reflects the issue you stated, is it wasn’t going to completely define the final list. How these games are ranked in the end can still be up to us to decide. I created this poll with the idea of getting a feel for the rest of the SNES community, and which games are important to who, which is why I included the option for write-ins. If we couldn’t come up with their selections the first time, we can avoid that mistake in the final cut. Additionally, seeing votes for “Super Metroid” and “Ninja Warriors” and “Sailor Moon” gives us more incentive to include them.
The numbers only reflect what people would like to put on the list, not how the list will be organized.

OfflineI would respectfully disagree with you both. I think that the poll should decide the rankings of the final list, with SNES Hub regulars weighing in to determine the order of any ties.
I actually feel that popularity is a pretty good measure of overall quality. If more people feel that Super Mario World deserves to be on this list than any other game, who am I to say that it doesn’t deserve the top spot? What credentials do I have that make my opinion more valid than any other?
Secondly, using votes to determine the final rankings will allow voters to have a sense of ownership in the final product. It will effectively become their list, not our list. My hope is that this sense of ownership will convince some voters to sign up for a SNES Hub account and continue to contribute in the future.
Just my $0.02.

OfflineIt all depends on how we want to make the top 200.
If this is supposed to be ”the top 200 snes games from everyone who plays snes” list and not OUR list, then yeah I guess it makes sense to only use the votes. Then I agree with your second point.
As for your first point, I am not saying our opinion is more valid then the voters’. What I am saying is, the well-known games WILL be at the top. Does that necessarily make them BETTER games (in terms of quality)? No. There are lesser known games that should clearly be in the top 25 or 50. But will probably not even make it to the top 150 because they are not popular. Our list should then be ”the top 200 most popular games” not the ”best games for the system”. People vote for what they know, not necessarily for the games with the highest quality.
But then again, a good game for someone could not be very good in the eyes of someone else..

OfflineI wanted to make a “200 greatest” list, and I don’t like ranking the final 200 games based on how many people voted for them. The issue of overshadowing brought up by Antarch is a big concern of mine, and so is misrepresenting the opinions of people who voted. 115 people voted for “Super Mario World”, but did they all vote for it to appear at number one, or just for it to appear on the list?
And on top of this, there should be some critical evaluation in organizing all these games that extends beyond popularity. The thread about our poll on DigitalPress has some discussion of how best-of lists like this one are already established, due to how much certain games have been vindicated, and it’s not an insignificant criticism. The cream rises to the top, which is what I get out of your arguments, Rush; but it’s what we all know about the libraries of big games consoles, anyway. If we all do agree to put “Super Mario World” at the top, we need a serious explanation of why. If we say it’s because the game earned the most votes, we’ll have said nothing of interest about what makes the SNES what it is, that hasn’t already been said by others before us.

OfflineRespectfully, we can place SMW at the top of the list for getting the most votes and come up with a compelling argument as to why it deserves the top spot (timeless platformed, helped define what the SNES was all about early one, etc.). We could come up with similar justifications for most of the games that have ranked high in the poll as well. Your idea of publishing the poll results sounds like a good compromise though.
That said, I think the poll results are as good a place as any to provide the initial rankings of a draft list. From there, we can argue which game should move up or down the rankings (and if there are any games that should be added or subtracted).

OfflineWe shouldn’t put “Super Mario World” at the top just because it has the most votes. We shouldn’t make justifications for ranking certain games according to their high percentages – that isn’t what I’m saying. But what I am saying is closer to your idea of using the poll results as a draft list and moving games around from there. I’m with that idea.
