I think this would be a interesting idea for an article. Arcade ports when done right, can become the highlight of the system, but bad ports can sometimes be the absolute worst a game library can offer (SNES Pit-Fighter & Atari Pac-Man.)

The Super NES, like many other systems, has quite a few lousy arcade ports, a few of which are probably the worst that the system has to offer.

I’d say Pit-Fighter is definitely the pick of the litter as far as truly awful arcade ports are concerned.

Great idea Mark!

SNK’s fighters (Fatal Fury series, Art of Fighting, Samurai Showdown, etc.) all saw lackluster ports to the console.  They’re not Pit Fighter bad, but they’re not really worth your time either.

Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown

Thanks for the suggestion mark! It’s a neat idea I’m sure we will use as a future article.

While I’m not big on many fighters the SNES port of Fatal Fury Special is quite good in my opinion. The biggest disappointment is Samurai Spirits/Shodown which is really scaled down on the Super Nintendo. Art Of Fighting 1 & 2 are games I’ve not played on the SNES, only the AoF Anthology on the PS2 which are basically Arcade-perfect ports.

I’ve never played Fatal Fury Special; glad to hear SNK got one right on the SNES.

Overall, I don’t see much point to playing SNES-era fighters in general, since like you said, the PS2 got arcade perfect ports of most early SNK and Capcom fighters.

Another bad port is the original Final Fight.  The game is still lots of fun, but as a port it’s pretty terrible.  It’s missing a playable character, missing co-op and is heavily censored.

Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown
