OfflineWould love to see some head-to-head comparison of SNES and Genesis games on the site. It could be a comparison of different versions of the same game (Mortal Kombat, EA Sports games, etc.) or a comparison of similar games from the same franchise (Contra, Castlevania, TMNT, Ghouls ‘n’ Ghosts, etc.).
It’s a lot of fun to look back on the console wars and see who came out on top when it came to a particular franchise or game.
Here’s some ideas:
NBA Jam – SNES vs. Genesis
Mortal Kombat Series – SNES vs. Genesis
Street Fighter Series – SNES vs. Genesis
Contra III vs. Contra Hard Corps
TMNT: Turtles in Time vs. TMNT: Hyperstone Heist
Super Ghouls ‘n’ Ghosts vs. Ghouls ‘n’ Ghosts
Super Castlevania IV vs. Castlevania: Bloodlines
Super Turrican vs. Mega Turrican
Space Megaforce vs. M.U.S.H.A.

OfflineThis is a pretty good idea. I can’t do the comparisons myself since I don’t have a Genesis, but a few others here have one, so it’s certainly possible.

OfflineI can contribute for quite a few of my suggestions, though I don’t own physical copies of all the games above (my collection skews to the Genesis side).
Would love to see a comparison between MUSHA and Space Megaforce, though that’s probably too niche for anyone to care about but me!

Nostalgia kicking in big timeI have had some great days with the Megadrive and still do so I can appreciate your Gen collection RushDawg. I remember Hyperstone Heist was awesome. Some games on that system define my gaming childhood, above all others I recall Shining Force being my fave.
I’ve actually been replaying Shining Force 2 on Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection. It’s a fantastic game that still holds up to this day.
Shining Force 1 is a bit rougher around the edges, but you have to respect it for how great it was for its time. It did have the cooler characters though (for me anyways).
Too bad Nintendo never released a Fire Emblem game outside Japan, otherwise we could have a SF vs. FE comparison as well.
I also find it neat that despite the SNES utter RPG dominance over the Genesis/Mega Drive, the Genny has the slight edge when it comes to Strategy RPGs.

OfflineI never played Shining Force 2 till I saw it on my friends Ultimate MD Collection and yes it is a very good, more open game than the first. I prefer the characters, music and battle effects in the first one though.
As for you saying Fire Emblem vs SF, would an alternative be something like SNES’ Ogre Battle:MotBQ which did get a US release or is that too dissimilar?

I’d consider Ogre Battle to be too dissimilar to Shining Force, though I’ll admit I don’t really “get” Ogre Battle. Tactics Ogre would be the better comparison.
I agree with you that SF1 has better characters then SF2. Can’t beat having a team of a ninja, an armadillo in a mech suit, an old man in a flying suit, a flying squid, etc., etc., etc.
It’s a shame Sega’s never ported or remade SF3.

OfflinePhantasy Star IV vs Final Fantasy 3 is a fair comparison if you’re looking to compare RPGs.
Phantasy Star II vs. Final Fantasy 2 is somewhat of a reasonable comparison as well. In that case, I’d argue that Phantasy Star II was more influential but Final Fantasy 2 was more fun to play (though the ATB was a pretty big innovation too)

Yes the Phantasy Star series omg can’t believe you mentioned it. Of the first 4 my faves were #1 for the Master System which seemed a technical achievement in itself and #4 on the MD/Gen. I really like the town music of Phantasy Star IV too, nice & very relaxing.
PS I and IV are by far the best in the series. PSI was so far ahead of its competition at the time.
PSIV on the other hand was about as good as its competitors. What makes PSIV such a blast is how streamlined the whole experience is. Battles play out very quickly and the game has that neat feature where you can talk to your party members and they’ll tell you where you’re supposed to be going (if you haven’t played in a while). It also beautifully wraps up the series. There’s something to be said about going out on a high note.
But is it better then FF6? Tough question and one I haven’t given enough though to! It’s a really exciting comparison the more I think about it, since the games came out around the same time.
On paper, PSII should be a classic, but in practice, it requires too much grinding and the dungeon layout borders on unfair.

Those all sound great! I’m most excited for 1991; some of the SNES’ best games came at launch.

Offline1991 is my magnum opus. I am very proud of it so far as there is really nothing else like it on the net. There is just so much confusion and misinformation about the first years of the Super Nintendo and it’s reception, and even it’s standing compared to SEGA early on. We talk about that console war like it was a sweep victory for SNES when nothing could be further from the truth.
History is a funny thing……

As a vet of the console wars, I remember quite vividly when Sega was winning around 1992. I firmly believe strong competition from Sega pushed Nintendo to develop their best games ever. It’s a shame that competition from Sony/Microsoft didn’t really have the same effect.
Looking forward to this!
