Thinking more about 1991, it’s crazy how big of an impact Sonic had for Sega and for the market in general. Sonic 1 is a great game for sure, but when you compare its content to Super Mario World, it really feels like a much more limited experience. Sonic 1’s success is a true testament to the role of marketing in a videogame’s success (we’re seeing the same thing these days with Call of Duty).

from the first time that I played sonic I absolutely didn’t like the game play. What made it even worse was the underwater levels… I thought it had some of the worst stage design I have ever seen but the concept was great.
that being said, I really enjoyed the 3d Sonic Adventure game I thought those were the pinnacle of the series

You’re definitely in the minority with that opinion!
Have you tried Sonic Generations?
It has fantastic 2-D and 3-D levels (I may actually prefer the 3-D levels in Generations).
One of my favourite games of the modern era.
