How about a series of articles with each article going over one year in the life of the SNES?  It can go over highlights of the games released that year and include commercial and other promotional materials.

Currently looking for the following SNES games:

Chrono Trigger

EarthBound

Final Fantasy II (Final Fantasy IV)

Secret of Mana

Illusion of Gaia

Super Castlevania IV

Super Mario RPG

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

 Zombies Ate My Neighbors

TMNT IV

Contra III

That would be a very ambitious series of articles. It’s a good idea, but will take a lot of research and time. I can’t think of another website off the top of my head that has such articles, so it’s certainly worth doing.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Mong says he’s working on a 1991 article which sounds fantastic.

For my money, 16-bit gaming hit its peak in 1994.  The Saturn/PSX were still a year away and both the SNES and Genesis got some of their best games.

Just look at this lineup!

SNES

  • Super Metroid
  • Super Street Fighter 2
  • Mortal Kombat 2 (with blood!)
  • Breath of Fire
  • Final Fantasy III
  • Donkey Kong Country
  • Super Punch Out
  • R Type 3

Genesis

  • Sonic 3
  • Phantasy Star IV
  • Shining Force 2
  • Sonic & Knuckles
  • Contra: Hard Corps
  • Castlevania: Bloodlines
  • Mega Turrican
  • Super Street Fighter 2
  • Mortal Kombat 2

I’d argue that 1994 is one of the best years in gaming ever!

Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown

Thank you very much.  I look forward to reading them.  I’m impressed at the 1994 lineup.  1994 had some quality movies as well, so 1994 might be my favorite year in terms of entertainment.

Currently looking for the following SNES games:

Chrono Trigger

EarthBound

Final Fantasy II (Final Fantasy IV)

Secret of Mana

Illusion of Gaia

Super Castlevania IV

Super Mario RPG

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

 Zombies Ate My Neighbors

TMNT IV

Contra III

Here are some other great years in gaming!

1981:

Donkey Kong (Arcade)
Stargate (Arcade) [sequel to Defender]
Gorf (Arcade)
Wizard of Wor (Arcade)
Frogger (Arcade)
Galaga (Arcade)
Ultima (PC)
Wizardry (PC)
Castle Wolfenstien (PC)

Ahh, the classics…

1983:

Archon (PC)
M.U.L.E. (PC)
Ultima III: Exodus (PC)
Pinball Construction Set (PC)
Mario Brothers (Arcade)
Spy Hunter (Arcade)
Dragon’s Lair (Arcade)
Gyruss (Arcade)
Pole Position II (Arcade)

1983 was a FANTASTIC year for gamers if you went to the arcade or had a PC.

1988:

Super Mario Brothers 2 (NES) [US Version]
Mega Man II (NES)
Super Contra (NES)
Metal Gear (NES)
1943 (NES)
Bionic Commando (NES)
Blaster Master (NES)
Bubble Bobble (NES)
Double Dragon (NES)
Guardian Legend (NES)
Ikari Warriors II (NES)
Life Force (NES)
Altered Beast (Arcade)
Super Mario Brothers 3 (NES) [Japan only]
Zelda II (NES)
Phantasy Star (Master System)
John Madden Football (PC)
Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny (PC)
Dragon Quest III (NES) [Japan]

So much good stuff…

1990:

Bonk’s Adventure (Turbographx 16)
Super Mario Brothers 3 (NES) [America]
Dr. Mario (NES/Gameboy)
Castlevania III (NES)
Crystalis (NES)
Double Dragon II (NES) [Everyone played this on NES]
Dragon Quest II (NES) [America]
Final Fantasy (NES) [America]
River City Ransom (NES)

Super Mario World (SNES) [Japan]
F-Zer0 (SNES) [Japan]
Railroad Tycoon (PC)
Ultima VI: The False Prophet (PC)
Wing Commander (PC)
Smash TV (Arcade)

I couldn’t keep up with all the good stuff. I don’t think I’ve still caught up with this year.

1991:

Civilization (PC)
Street Fighter II (Arcades)
Neverwinter Nights (PC)
Road Rash (PC)
Wing Commander 2 (PC)
Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis)
Super Mario World (SNES) [America]
Zelda: Link to the Past (SNES) [Japan]
Final Fantasy IV (SNES) [Japan]
Tecmo Super Bowl (NES)
Adventure Island II (NES)
Battletoads (NES)
Ikari III (NES)
Metal Storm (NES)
Micromachines (NES)
Ninja Gaiden III (NES)

Civilization and Street Fighter II? More genres building…

1992:

Mortal Kombat (arcades)
Ultima VII (PC)
Ultima Underworld (PC)
Kirby’s Dream Land (Gameboy)
Wolfenstien 3d (PC)
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Genesis)
Dune II (PC)
Super Mario Kart (SNES)
Contra 3 (SNES)
Soul Blazer (SNES)
Star Control 2 (PC)

Birth of new game genres happened this year with Super Mario Kart, Dune II, Ultima Underworld and Wolfenstien 3d. Incredible 2d platformers were released then. Mortal Kombat’s release marked the big fighter genre rise. Ultima VII, you didn’t need MMORPGs (U7 would be the launching pad for the MMORPG genre).

just some thoughts……

Wow those are some great games to summarize the years gone by. I’m just about old enough to remember some of the 1990 selection though it was Xmas 1991 when I got the NES with SMB, SMB3 & DKClassics.

1989 was another great year, as it was the launch year for two of the best system’s ever; Gameboy and Genesis / Mega Drive!

Some of the year’s best games include:

-Golden Axe (Genesis)

-Revenge of Shinobi (Genesis) – the initial release had you fighting Spider-Man, Batman, Godzilla, Terminator, etc. as bosses

-Phantasy Star II (Genesis)

-Ghouls ‘n’ Ghosts (Genesis) – more fun then Super Ghouls ‘n’ Ghosts for me, because I can actually beat it!

-Tetris (Game Boy)

-Super Mario Land (Game Boy)

-Mega Man 2 (NES)

Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown

Super Ghouls is my favorite of the two, needless to say, the line ups for games were great back then!

Super Ghouls had the double jump and slightly better graphics / sound, but man was it hard!  You also couldn’t shoot up (which of course just made things harder).

Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown

I was a fan, admittedly I don’t have much experience with the first game though!

I think it would be fun to do a 20th anniversary review each year. So, this year we could put the spotlight on games from 1993. Or else we could do “happy 21st birthday,” and celebrate 1992, etc.
