It’s apparent that Nintendo has ignored some really great franchises practically since the GameCube. Until just recently, they basically only put out Zelda and Mario games, bringing back Donkey Kong due to Retro’s talents. Fire Emblem got a new game in Awakening for 3DS, and so did Kid Icarus, and new Yoshi and Kirby games are coming out for the 3DS. But Star Fox, F-Zero, a good Metroid, these are things that could bolster the WiiU and 3DS and Nintendo’s image overall. You could even go back to Excitebike, Ice Climbers, and Earthbound (just imagine the clamor around that one). Not to mention no Wii Sports U. Motion really doesn’t seem to be nearly as important with the WiiU as it was the Wii, which is a little odd; they can still make motion-sensor games and put out more traditional ones incorporating the gamepad.

It sounds like we’ll probably get another Metroid game from Retro at some point, maybe even a Star Fox utilizing the gamepad, but it’s totally up in the air about F-Zero. I guess we’ll have to wait to see E3 in June, but personally I’m most excited for Sonic Boom, even if it is different. At least Sega’s trying harder than Nintendo with Mario.

At least we got the new MarioKart and Super Smash Bros and Tropical Freeze for awhile 🙂

Which games would you all like to see brought back/given a new spin? I think Mario could definitely use something fresh.

How about all the memorable franchises getting a new HD game? Star Fox is a no-brainer. I was playing the Metroid spaceship game on Nintendoland and thinking the way that game uses the gamepad would be perfect for StarFox. Here’s some other ones, some you already mentioned:

Hogans Alley

Excitebike

Kid Icarus

Ice Climbers

Fire Emblem

Kung-Fu

Star Tropics

Kirby

Balloon Fight

Yoshi’s Island

Metroid

There’s probably a lot more.

3DS has an excellent library right now. Nintendo just needs to do the same for the Wii U and it would become more respectable.

Earthbound if market correctly could be just what Nintendo needs, as they have been weak in the RPG arena sice SNES.

Star Fox is a No-Brainer, provided it takes place IN A SPACESHIP. Not on foot doing puzzles, not in a tank, IN A SPACESHIP.

F-Zero could be a cheap, fast complement to Mario Kart.

Sakamoto Killed Metroid with Other M. This franchise will have to rebuild and prove its elf on handhelds now.

Excitebike and its coursebuilder would be a perfect fit for Miis and the Miiverse.

Ice climbers could be fantastic in both 2D or 3D.

Its just too bad that Nintendo has no desire to make what excites you. Its not about what we want, its about what THEY want…

What’s strange about the Wii U is that Nintendo actually did bring back an older niche franchise, Pikmin, before releasing some of their heavy hitters (Mario Kart, Zelda).

As I said in another topic, I think Nintendo would do well to partner with talented third party developers to help reintroduce some of their old properties.  Nintendo doesn’t have the resources internally to make an Ice Climbers or even a Star Fox for the Wii U, since they’re development teams are already tied-up on higher-value properties like Mario Kart.

Treasure and Star Fox feels like a match made in heaven to me.  Treasure can make arcade style shooters better than everybody and they know how inject their games with a weird charm.

Sega did great with the last F-Zero; why not let them take a crack at a new one?

Sega’s Valkyria Chronicles team could do a great job with a new Fire Emblem.  Perhaps they could inject the series with some 3D elements?

Last, but not least, I think there’s a decent chance Retro Studios is currently working on a new Metroid game.  Retro is absolutely the right studio to handle this, though I hope they’d make it more like the first Prime and less like its sequels, which added a lot of story elements that are decidedly un-Metroid.  I think just about everyone is in agreement that Metroid games don’t need a story outside of what is already communicated through gameplay.

Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown
