OfflineNext Saturday I’m driving to northern Alabama (2.5 hr away) to compete in the North Alabama Tecmo Super Bowl Tournament. I don’t play online, so I’m pretty sure I won’t stack up to the competition. But I’m going for the fun, the nostalgia, and the experience.
Have any of y’all attended, or competed in video game tournaments?
There aren’t many games with such a following, and prone to the competitive atmosphere, as TSB for the NES. My second question is, if there ever was a game on the SNES that could rise to such a cult status as to garner real-life tournament play, what would it be?

OfflineNo I don’t play any tourney’s bud. Not unless you count when it’s a special ‘once in a blue moon’ day where a few of us go through several old school games trying to win the most, but that’s purely local with normally only 2 or 3 of us if we the time. Still it beats playing some schmuck on the other side of the world when I want to play against someone. As Soccer games go I still enjoy playing ISS Deluxe on the SNES, it’s really playable and fun once two people of similar ability go head to head. Same with Micro Machines, that’s a great multi-player racing game.

OfflineI haven’t played in any tournaments. If I were to play in any, I would have wanted to compete in the Nintendo World Championships back in the day.
As for Super Nintendo game tournaments, I could see Super Mario Kart garner a tourney following. That game is still a lot of fun, but not as fun as Mario Kart 64!

OfflineI hardly ever play competitively against other people, for two reasons mainly. 1. im not very good at games when it comes to competitions, 2. im not competitive at all so it doesnt mean anything to me wether i win or lose, so i get nothing from it.
But its nice to see that people who do like to compete set up competitions of old games like tecmo football games and what not, and not just the same 13 on a dozen FPS tournaments thats already out there.
Good luck.

MK 64 has the worst AI catch up on any MK game I’ve ever played. I suppose with 3 or 4 local players it’s still great fun on multi-player. Going through that Yoshi Valley track after years of not playing can be as an exciting race as you’ll get when competing against others who have no idea where they’re going…. I used to hate those spiny’s that spun you off though!

OfflineI should have known there’d be live, meet-up tournaments for NHL 94 (a game I mentioned in my last review). The NHL series has been hacked to pieces over the years, which would explain the game’s following carrying to the present day. Not to mention hockey is one of the world’s premier sports.

Masamune, Mariokart is a good call. I’d attend a tourney for that game, but not compete–it’d be fascinating. I’ve never had a premier knack for racing games, however.
Reading everyone’s responses reminds me why I’m into retro sports games: the competition. While in a sense every game is competitive for the gamer–be it puzzles, challenges or AI–sports games have a winner and a loser, with stats (not just points) to measure just how well you performed. As a side-note, TSB on the NES was just about the first game to have season-long stat-tracking, meaning you could record on a steno pad how well you did in categories, such as points and yards gained for each player, that season and boast to your buds.
Well, thanks for all the well-wishing, and Mongunzoo, I’ll definitely take some pictures.

Mario Kart always had issues where the person in last got great power ups. I never like that.
Items make the game fun so that never bothered me so much as watching my lead get whittled down by automatic speed increase on the AI driver in 2nd/3rd. Trust me, the 64 one was worst for this. You can literally watch in your rear view mirror, at times it’s like the driver behind is on a constant golden mushroom if you manage to get a lead through them crashing or falling off.

OfflineI’m back from the tournament–it was stupendous. I talked to the gamers, who mostly hailed from northern Alabama. There were many levels of skill there and the competition was fierce.
I did take some pictures. But I’ll direct your attention to the write-up on Bleacher Report, a popular American sports website. The author was one of the gamers I talked with (and eliminated from the tournament).
Overall, I went 3-2, winning some close games and being eliminated by a margin of one point!
