Topic RSSI know we kinda talked about this in another thread, but I think this topic deserves its own thread.
For me I would want:
1) The hardware to be significantly more powerful than Xbox 360 and PS3
2) Online multiplayer on par with Xbox Live or even PSN
3) A wide array or downloadable games from the NES era to the Dreamcast era.
4) A way to easily re-download games you accidentally deleted or lost due to the system breaking down.
5) Strong 3rd Party support.
6) Call it something else other than Wii U. ![]()
If these things take place, I feel Nintendo’s next gen console is a must buy for me! What do you think?

OfflineI’d like to be more powerful than PS3 and 360 as well. I’ve heard it is and I’ve heard it isn’t so we’ll just have to wait & see. The interesting thing will be if developers take extra advantage of the extra horsepower and actually make the games look better on Wii-U. God I hate that name, it’s HORRIBLE!! Wii I was able to live with but Wii-U just sounds bad no matter how ya cut it. They’d be smart to call it something entirely since everyone will just think it’s a supercharged Wii with a touch screen controller which it very well could turn out to be, LOL! Unlikely but ya never know with Nintendo as they consistently do things on their terms.
This years E3 is the biggest event in Nintendo’s life as it has to show whether or not it can compete with the current HD systems and still innovate with a new style of controller gameplay. It’s do or die with them as far as home consoles go though as their portable market is still thriving despite phone & tablet gaming.
If they come out of E3 with some AAA first party titles that aim at the hardcore they’ve got a chance but I remain skeptical cause the last Metroid and Zelda games left much to be desired for me and as much as I love Mario Galaxy. Part 2 was more or less an expansion pack for the 1st game. Hopefully they’ll prove me wrong but I’ll definitely be tuning into their press conference in June to find out!!

OfflineSee i’m in the other direction when it comes to hardware power. Since it is too expensive to hit the tech wall on the PS3, it would kind of be a waste of Nintendos money to be MORE powerful.
I hear you on the multiplayer. Stop chasing 3D and join the rest of gaming in realizing that the future of the industry is online!
Virtual console is a great concept, but they need to let us buy the license. I should not have to buy Games again on the WiiU if I bought them on the Wii. If they do not do this I will contiunue to not buy VC games!
3rd party support is great, IF those 3rd parties are doing games worth buying!
Ultimately they need to contunue what the Wii STARTED as and recapture the magic of old.
1)2D Mario DAY ONE!! This equals a day one purchase for me!
2)A REAL sequel to Super Metroid! Or at least another Prime! Keep Sakamoto away from this game at all costs!!!!
3)Donkey Kong Country Returns 2!
4)A Zelda in the vein of the old Action/Adventure titles! NO MORE PUZZLE/NARRATIVES!!
5)Smash Bros.
6)More Simple Sports Titles
7)How bout a REAL StarFox!?!
8)How bout a F-Zero?!?
9)Dont make us beg for more great RPGs like Xenoblade!! You ave MistWalker and MonolithSoft!! (Teh two greatest RPG devs on the planet) Stop Wasting Them!!
Ultimately it comes down less about specs and more about games. It has always been about the games, and the WiiU will be no exception!

When most people think about a next generation console, they expect an graphical upgrade from the previous generation. That’s part of the allure of a new console. I know, a game doesn’t have to be pretty to be good, but like it or not, most gamers, especially the hardcore kind are gonna want to see noticeable improvement in graphics. Until I hear otherwise, I’m assuming Nintendo is going to attempt to win back hardcore gamers this time.

OfflineI’m sure the “Hardcore” (how I LOATHE that term) expect a graphical upgrade. I expect them to be dissappointed.
The HD generation has really made it difficult for these games to make a profit. A budget for a Triple A Title is usually in excess of 40 million dollars-almost half of the Budget given to your average Hollywood movie. This is problematic when you realize that Hollywood movies have MUCH more market penetration than console gaming does these days. Even with these customers it is difficult to make a profit in the movie business. Most movies scrape by.
In the next eneration you will see budets double in order to hit the “tech wall” I am constantly babbling about. The Samaritan Demo that the industry is in love with would cost 100 million to fully realize. This comes directly from epic.
What I have been trying to say is that there is such a thing as “good enough” for the average consumer. Since we cannot even feasibly max out the PS3’s potential I say we are there, at least for a while.
As a tie-in, studies show consistently that the HD consoles have shed customers in comparison to the last generation. I suspect that may be due to this rise in cost. So lets do the math: INCREASE in Budgets for product + DECREASE in Customer base=NOT SUSTAINABLE.
How many gamers who showed up this go will show up for the next big thing? Depends on how many view it as unnecessary. Most gamers I talk to see no reason to upgrade, and it will take an insane amount of money to show us why we should.
What must occur if we reallly have decided to up the graphical ante again is to increase the customer base for the game industry. Even moving EVEYONE who bought a PS3 or 360 forward may not be enough for Samaritan-level budgets.
No. We will need the Wii owners to all move forward as well. And that is not going to happen. Not for SuperHD!!

OfflineYa know, it’s sad that these companies have forgotten why many gamers became lifelongers in the first place! Speaking to the industry I say “It’s The Games, Stupid!”
Yamauchi (President of Nintendo during the NES and SNES) famously said that the NES was a box that people bought to play mario. I get that graphics are important, sound is important, etc, but the console is just the means to the end.
I dont buy a PS3 so I can have bluetooth functionality or a Blu-Ray Player or whatever feature they are touting. I bought my PS3 to play Demon Souls! The PS3 was the box I bought to get to Demon Souls.
I didn’t buy a Wii because of WackyControllers and the Weather Channel! I bought a Wiui to experience NSMB Wii! The Wii was literally the box I bought to get to Mario!!
I never did BUY a 360. Why? Nothing I deemed interesting. It was an empty box to me.
Developers need to get back to that mentality. A console is not interesting to the average consumer because it can play DVDs or Stream Internet! There are cheaper and better ways to do that. But My DVD player cannot give me a 2D Mario Experience!
They can upgrade hardware all they want, but at the end of the day it comes down to games. Give me the games that I want And I’ll buy your box. Dont and I’ll ignore you.

OfflineSpeaking of the importance of games, as a former Ninteondo investor I would love to see The Big N DO what they almost did with the Wii and go back to a Momentum Schedule for their WiiU Releases. That means that you tier your games to bring in new customers, sustain those customers, and finally extend the life of your console.
WiiU Tier 1 Games: These games are designed to sell your new system. They are typically proven sellers and are mass-market games that appear early in the consoles life cycle. Examples for the WiiU might include a 2D Mario, Classical Zelda (as in action/adventure, It CAN be 3D), A SimpleSports Game (WiiUSports?), Smash Bros, Donkey Kong Country, and a Mario Kart.
GIVE ME A REASON TO BUY.
WiiU Tier 2 Games: These games are to remind the early adopters that you still love them. These are games that may not get sequels or sell systems on their own, but you can bet that mnay who already own the system will buy these games! Examples for the WiiU might include a Pikmin Game, a StarFox Game, Kirby Games, and Metroid.
GIVE ME A REASON TO INVEST.
WiiU Tier 3 Games: Tese are games that release after the competition has already upgraded or announced plans to upgrade. They are the life-extenders. Examples include New IPs and Sequels to some system sellers (Mario, Donkey Kong, etc.)
GIVE ME A REASON TO STAY.
If the WiiU does this then it disrupts the competition as well as builds loyalty in their customer base.
Anyway, all some food for thought….
going to sleep now…

Well, if the graphics aren’t going to be vastly superior to what we already have, then why even make a next generation console in the first place?
I thought I heard somewhere Microsoft wasn’t going to release a next gen console until the 360 has seen 10 years. Obviously that will come a little short. I wouldn’t mind this current generation having a 10 year active life before moving on to the next thing…
But since the next generation is upon us, isn’t it inherently expected to see a leap in graphics? Take everything else out of the equation for a moment. If a next-gen system doesn’t have improved graphic capabilities, what’s the point?

Offlinethat would be a great question for Iwata, Miyamoto, and the rest of Nintendo, as they are forcing an unwanted jump when they have a system with a 91-million strong userbase that would be satisfied with more Wii content!
But to answer it myself, THERE WOULD BE NO POINT.
I have no doubts that the new systems CAN do more then current tech. What I question is whether developers will be able to utilize it without bankrupting their companies. Since they cannot even fully tap the PS3 due to budget constraints, my guess will be no.
The only way we might be able to do this would be to grow gaming’s customer base again. And that would mean making games for the customer again, instead of just making the games for themselves.

OfflineHaving just spent a considerable amount of time with the new Mario Brothers game, I will say this: though it brings past concepts together better than any in the series history and has moments of brilliance, it is ultimately the most disappointing entry in the series. I will not buy a WiiU for just this game. Which means that unless Nintendo really goes back to their roots *(Zelda and Metroid, another DKC, a REAL STAR FOX) I am ceasing to be gamer again in the modern sense for the forseeable future.
(LONG RANT AHEAD)
I am reading many rationalizations for NSMBU. Why they recycled the same fucking music from NSMB. Why there is no real gameplay additions brought to the table (Even 5 brought multiplayer and vertical levels). Why we are STILL using recycled worlds (the exception being the BRILLIANT Soda Jungle.)
Some say it is a business decision because the Neanderthal 2D Mario Fan who purchase NSMB do not want to see “change”. Others say that the game was rushed to completion. Still, others say the B Team was put in charge.
The only proper explanation, which everyone is tiptoeing around, is that Nintendo just doesn’t care. The nearly twenty year absence of Super Mario Brothers from the home console scene is evidence that the software developers just never cared to make it. (The business side of the company certainly cares which is the only reason why it is being made today.) Notice how Nintendo only seems to care about 3d Mario and only about converting their customers to play it. Yet, it has failed with every iteration over decades. This is the actual Nintendo arrogance. Apparently, I don’t know what games I like and require Nintendo to tell them to me. “You don’t actually like 2d Mario over 3d Mario, you just don’t find 3d Mario accessible enough.” No. We actually don’t like 3d Mario. At least 2d Mario is demonstrating it can sell without graphics, amazing soundtracks, and new gameplay. 3d Mario can’t sell even with those things.
We purchased Nintendo consoles and fell in love with their systems because of games like Super Mario Brothers, Legend of Zelda, and Metroid. Super Mario Brothers turned into a 3d monstrosity (with that horrible voice which made Mario uncool). Zelda turned into a boring PC Adventure game devoid of anything that fans of the series can recognize. Metroid turned into a horrifically-written soap opera about “THE BABY”.
At first, I thought I had changed as a gamer. I was older now. Maybe gaming is only for the young. Yet, I still had a blast with my NES, SNES, and Genesis. The explanation I accepted was that Nintendo didn’t understand what they did. They thought in the mid 90s that they had to apply 3d to everything because of the competition and times. How could I blame them for that? I never knocked Nintendo for making Super Mario 64. I thought they just didn’t understand that they didn’t have to go 3d with EVERYTHING.
Despite not purchasing Hardware I kept giving Nintendo passes. With the N64, Nintendo just doesn’t understand. With the Gamecube, Nintendo just doesn’t understand.
Then the year was 2006. Nintendo’s fortunes are riding high and going higher. Why? What changed here? What changed was that we, the old schoolers, began to think Nintendo was beginning to understand. We have been awaiting this day. It was the day where we could return to buying a Nintendo console. What was the Wii? It was a simple console with a very simple controller. More to it, the Wii resembled a modern day NES. The controller layouts were identical where you could turn the Wiimote on its side and have it the full NES functionality. At E3 2006, Nintendo showed off the Wii Zapper and ‘gun games’ which is reminiscent of the NES light gun. And the Classic Controller resembled the SNES controller exactly with a couple of analog sticks. The Virtual Console was a big deal. While the Virtual Console shop was terribly done and the lack of an account killed any and all sales, the Virtual Console represented that Nintendo was remembering its past. Wii Sports resembled the NES Sports games, and Nintendo actually said so. Wii Sports golf courses were based on the NES Golf game. The idea of taking a console home and having the entire neighborhood stream through your living room was reminiscent from the early days of game consoles. I remember it from the NES.
At the end of 2009, the Wii sold out thanks to NSMB Wii which I call Super Mario Brothers 5. Why? It is because we interpreted it as Super Mario Brothers 5. We have been waiting for that game for 18 years. When Super Mario Collection came out, it instantly sold out even though it was nothing more than NES games with 16-bit graphics. We were telling Nintendo what we wanted. Donkey Kong Country Returns was also a great success whose sales are due to the SNES Era games and the fans the DKC series made beyond that time period (kids growing up with the game on the handheld versions).
By 2011 the Wii had entered full decline. Why? In 2010 Nintendo told us we had another 3D Mario and another Zelda to look forward to. But NO ONE CARES about 3d Mario and Zelda has become a joke due to how eccentric it has become. And Metroid: Other M was greeted with outright hostility. These games felt like Nintendo was just giving its fans a middle finger. Nintendo was demonstrating they just didn’t care that Zelda was going further and further away from its roots. With Metroid Other M, Nintendo was saying they just didn’t care about our previous Metroid experiences. If Nintendo was not going to care about giving us the games we wanted to buy, why should we want to buy their upcoming consoles?
The answer that they gave us was NSMBU. A game that couldn’t even be bothered to write new music for, or come up with worlds aside from PLAINSDESERTICEJUNGLEMOUNTAINSKYFIRE, or introduce ONE NEW GAMEPLAY CONCEPT. Wait until the WiiU gets its 3D Mario, and just watch how much love is put into THAT….
It is now the year 2012. Twelve years ago, I said, “Nintendo just doesn’t understand,” as they rushed headlong into 3d and made 3d Mario and distorted Zelda into a PC adventure game. Six years ago, I said, “Nintendo now understands,” and I wrote at great length about the Nintendo resurgence and the potential of a second Console Gaming Renaissance . Today I say, “Nintendo just doesn’t care.”
Nintendo just doesn’t care that they’re ruining 2d Mario by turning it into a repetitious joke.
Nintendo just doesn’t care that no one buys Zelda anymore because “everything is like a puzzle”, a PC adventure game.
Nintendo just doesn’t care that the Metroid franchise is destroyed because of Sakamoto and his “version” of Samus destroyed the players perception.
Now Nintendo is showing that they no longer care about their own flagship.
If Nintendo ruins 2D Mario, then they are in serious trouble as a company. IF 2D MARIO DIES, NINTENDO DIES. This is not the economic heyday of the late 90’s/early 2000s anymore! Nintendo cannot successfully maintain a hardware market presence without 2d Mario. The sales of the N64 and Gamecube show that they never could, even in those gravy days. And the N64 and GC had the advantage of being sold at a profit.
today, Nintendo is entering HD market and now has the burden of HD Development costs and selling a console that starts as a loss!
There are alternatives to modern consoles. If Nintendo doesn’t want me as a customer, then that is fine. My SNES and Genesis work fine. I went over a decade without buying a single thing from this industry. whats another ten years to me…

OfflineWell I think there is a place in the world for both 2D and 3D Mario. I’ve heard a lot of positive feedback on the Wii U Mario game from other gaming forums. It’s received solid scores from many gaming publications as well. It’s probably worth picking up if you’re buying a Wii U.
Your sentiment about recycled music and not really adding anything new is also something I heard about the game. I think that was a mistake whether because it was rushed or the developers didn’t care, or whatever the case may be. People who have already played the other 3 iterations of the New Mario Bros. series may be burned out on this one. Those who have played one or none of the previous ones may enjoy this new game more.
Nintendo may be getting lazy with their games, but will people still buy them? That’s all that really matters (to them anyway). If they can still make a profit with rehashed design, they’ll do that because it’s easier.
Of course the Wii U’s book has just started being written. For all we know they could have awesome Zeldas, Marios, DKCs, Metrioids, and Star Foxes coming down the pipeline that will recapture our imaginations.
That being said some people are harder to please than others. I’m relatively easy to please. YMMV.

OfflineDon’t get me wrong, It is VERY good. I agree that if it is your first Mario then you could not have a better one other than SMB. But when I look at the changes from SMW to NSMB Wii, they are substantial.
SMB: Modern Platforming
SMB3: World Maps. Airships. Minigames.
SMW: ONE Integrated world. Multiple exits. Ghost Houses. Secret Worlds. Yoshi.
NSMB Wii: Vertical levels. Multiplayer.
Each game Has its own personality and flair. Each game brings something new to the table.
NSMB U has an integrated world. It has multiple goals. It has Secret worlds. It has minigames. It has Ghost ships, Airships, Towers, and Castles. It has Yoshi. It has multiplayer. That is what i mean when I say it combines all of Mariodom better then any that comes before. But there is no progression for the first time in the series. And that frightens me.
And Nintendo is not getting lazy with ALL of their games. That is why I scratch my head. Nintendo is never lazy with Zelda, 3D Mario, or Metroid: Other M. Nintendo only chooses to be lazy with certain games. Games that just happen to sell really well.
I find it funny looking back on interviews about 2D Mario development. Developers say it is hell, and that after each release they contemplate never doing another. But anytime 3D Mario is made they positively glow with interest. Development on these games is always described as “magical”. Is it no wonder why we have 3D Mario treated so well in comparison?
When NSMB Wii came out, I said that they could only do this kind of thing once. So what happens now? Will 2D Mario Die? No. But it will begin to decline if it continues to be treated in this manner. And that is bad for gaming.
So I will wait for more. If Nintendo can give me more then i will bite. Mario Kart will surely come! MonolithSoft has a U project in the works. And SURELY we will get another DKC Returns?!? And Mario U.
That makes Four games. My own policy is I need six. If a system cannot produce six games that interest me, then no thanks.
And the reason I do not even mention Zelda or Metroid is that these games are dead franchises now. I will not even follow Metroid uless it is out of Sakamoto’s hands at this point. That does not have to be explained. And Zelda will need a major baggage chuck and overhaul to become interesting to the masses again. I would advise Aonuma to study Dark Souls, but this would not be constructive since he cannot even beat the Oktorocks in the original game!
Star fox was gutted and combined with a New IP so it would sell better and it ended up killing the franchise. F-Zero is a forgotten game that Nintendo no longer cares about.
But you are right. Nintendo COULD Surprise me. I hope that they do. But I have studied this company and what they say too long to think that will happen.
Time will tell…
