A COTGW piece that is worth a read since this is a category. Similar to a piece I wrote recently.

Thanks for sharing this. I had so much hope for G4TV when it first came available in my area around 2003. It started off good, then got better, then progressively got worse and devolved into what it is now. The only shows worth watching are X-Play and AOTS, but even X-Play isn’t good as it was.

I finally took the time to read the entire article. laugh I’ve never thought about G4 so deeply as this writer has. It never occurred to me that G4 was insulting me or gamers in general. Sure, replacing gaming programs with stuff like Cops and Ninja Warrior sucked, but I never took it as a personal slap to the face.

The channel during the early 2000’s actually showed some promise and seemed to actually reach out to true gamers. Things started to change around 2005. Guess what happened around that time?

Is it really G4 that thinks we’re stupid? Or is it their parent company, NBC who holds these thoughts?

First Off, It would not surprise me a bit if NBC shared this sentiment.  Gaming is a long way away from being as cultural as it was in the heyday of the arcade and NES, contrary to popular belief.

As for the switch in direction of non-gamer programming, consider this:  How many of those gamer shows were getting enough views to stay afloat?  Were enough people watching This programming to make it viable?  There is a reason for this switch.

My personal theory is that Cops and Cheaters and the like replaced the less-viewed shows for survival purposes.  Note the ones that survived were the ones that were watched. (X-Play, AOTS).

If accurate it would confirm a lot of my analysis on the state of gaming.

Obviously those gamer shows weren’t pulling in the ratings, hence the axe. I want to believe that put in a competent person’s hands, those gamer shows that did get canceled could of flourished. Those were quality shows for the most part. My question is was the channel advertised properly to garner the attention of the targeted demographic? Was the channel available in all markets when it showed the most potential? If not, why not?

Who in their right mind would think an overdose of Cops, Ninja Warrior, and Campus PD was the better option? The only reason why those shows are there is because their cheap. Did those shows increase ratings? Did it take the network into the stratosphere? No. It hasn’t. Direct TV dropped the channel from their lineup, there are rumors of poor viewership in 2011, and the two biggest personalities are leaving the channel.

Its time someone in the cable industry recognized there could be a significant market for a true 24-hour video game network.

If DirectTV dropped them then the insulting strategy of Cops/CampusPD did not work.  Thank god for that.

I think that a true gamer-directed Newschannel would do wonders, but for that to happen other businesses would have to begin to take gaming more seriously, something that is probably not going to happen given the way the Game industry itself treats its customers.
