Stars Wars is one of those franchises that has a copious amount of video game adaptations. I imagine it is difficult to pull off the feel of the movies and transport it into video game form. In his first review for the site, JohnoffZelda gives his perception of the game here.

Yes an excellent review and really honest in your opinions. Good work John LoZ. I had exactly the same impression on my own playing of the game. It looks the part but the cheapness of the platforming sections with constant re-spawning enemies just amounts to utter frustration. It’s a shame because if they ironed these faults it would be one of the better platformers on the system. As it is it sort of makes me not want to play it, not a good trait in any game.

You did a terrific job, here, John! A perfect way to kickstart what I hope will be many more.
This review is important, because it is what I like to call a Grey-Area Game. These are games that do not play that well, yet are constantly hyped up by people who have perhaps not even played the game all the way through. Super star wars often falls into that category, being a game from a popular franchise.
I am glad that our web site can go above this and deliver an honest look at an overrated game. Thanks, JohnoffZelda!

That was a great first review John. Can’t wait to see what else you have in store for us.
Thank you. But I submitted two other reviews, didn’t I? Should I re-submit them?

You make a good point there, Mongunzoo.
Back in the day, “Super Star Wars” and other Grey-Area Games were given a big nod by a former Entertainment Weekly writer named Bob Strauss. I’m kind of fascinated by his other videogame articles for that magazine, because they give an unusual insight into how the Super Nintendo resonated with the average Joe.

No need to re-post! They are there!
Right on with Bob Strauss! He is one of many that have given us a false memory of certain games! Not that SSW is bad, but I cannot really recommend it when far superior titles such as Plok get the shaft.
Part of our responsibility as I see it is enlightening new SNES gamers by steering them towards the good games right off the bat. Hind-sight’s 20/20 but if I could do it over again I would have bought Plok instead of Super Star Wars. Yet it is often Super Star Wars that gets the nod after the usual suspects are listed (Mario, DKC, Kirby).

Oh, how I loved this game as a child. Who didn’t love having a Lightsaber!? In a Jontron video, he actually touches on this game a bit, which you guys may find humorous.
You know what; I really like JonTron (and Egoraptor), but I haven’t seen that full video until now! I figured that the “Troll 2” reference was all I needed to know.
And I’m sorry if I disappointed you, I was just being honest. I really like certain “Star Wars” games, just not this one.

I really liked this review if anything. It’s great to hear different opinions regarding games, especially those that are high-profile.
John, are you planning to write more reviews?

Sometimes we really like a game when we were children, but if we played certain games again as adults, they don’t hold up as well. Cintronella, do you feel the same way about this game?
You know this is generally how I feel towards Super Star Wars. I can’t speak for the other two games in the trilogy as I haven’t ever played them but if I play SSW now it’s not the same. That can be said I suppose for just about any game you go back to that you played as a child but being older and wiser my opinion is SSW has an almost unfinished feel to it. I hate to criticize unfairly but I feel just in what I say, it’s a struggle to find enjoyment in certain sections of the game unfortunately.

Spot-on review. Behind the presentation (and the awesome source material) lies a frustrating game with some serious flaws. That said, relative to a lot of the SNES’ library, this one isn’t too bad. I think that back in the day, we all played a lot of crap (we didn’t know better) and this one seemed a little less crappy then the rest (if that makes sense).
Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown
