Super Mario Brothers 7 is a simple concept revolving around taking Mario back to it’s Nonsense Fantasy roots using all of the resources and ambition available to current-generation developers. In the spirit of classical Mario, where every game would push current system capabilities to their limits in order to showcase all the system is capable of.
Inspirations: Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland, various Folk and Fairy Tales, The 1001 Nights, and The Wizard of Oz are all influences on the art direction and scenarios present in this game. Surreal locations that can be seen in the real world and fantasy locations influence the locations. The classical adventures are a heavy influence in the tone of the game, as Super Mario Brothers 1-3 all dealt with world that have ALREADY BEEN CONQUERED, giving the games a dark and dangerous feeling. Since recent games have established that the Mushroom kingdom is currently largely peaceful, in the interest of continuity and originality, this Mushroom Kingdom will be under siege AT PRESENT. It will be up to Mario to find out what is causing the problems by exploring a brand new realm.
I will do one entry per day, and feel free to comment on what you would like to see happen in a 2D Mario. My concept is finished, but that does not mean that there are not other ideas equally good.
I hope you enjoy this project, and find it interesting.

OfflineWorld 1: The Mushroom Kingdom
Ah… The Mushroom Kingdom. We have seen it all over the past few games. The Plains levels. The Desert Levels. The Ice, Sky, Forest, Mountain, Water, and Fire Levels….
Do we REALLY need to see this same shit over again?
The answer is yes. The Mushroom Kingdom is the real reason why we buy the ticket, it’s the reason why we are here. And it’s lack of expansion is the reason why Mario feels stale and uninspired. So where does the Mushroom Kingdom come from? The same wellspring of thought that produces such surreal works as Alice In Wonderland and the Wizard Of Oz. Worlds where the incomprehensible become reality. And due to this insane nature, imaginations are given great room to soar.
So with that in mind, Do we really need to see the plains or the Desert dunes another time? No. Let’s use the one world I am giving the Mushroom Kingdom to explore the more interesting locales in each Biome. That’s really all we need at this point. It’s time for Mario to set sail to other vistas, like a modern day Gulliver…
1.Peach’s castle: A perfect place to start! Let’s place the first level in the game in a Peach’s castle under siege. Paintings can come to life and spew nightmarish baddies into the castle! Toad’s can be transformed into blocks as the level goes on! (remember when there were tons of blocks throughout Mario games, all toads transformed by dark magic? It would stand to reason that a toad’s worst nightmare would be that happening again lol! You will notice a theme as time goes on…).
2.Toad Town: A Vista of colorful Mushrooms is the perfect fit for a Mario Level. More Blocks and lots of entry-level enemies to trounce…
3.Delfino Island:The perfect vista to explore in the water biome! “Las Venice” seems like a colorful place full of unique Architecture and lots of water!
4.Desert Oasis: Lots of possibilities in this one1 Not as ubiquitous as the sand dunes, a small destroyed village in a desert oasis give the Desert biome a fresh spin.
5.From Jack In the Beanstalk to Laputa in Gulliver’s travels, this treasure-hoarding kingdom of Lakitu’s would make for one sky-high adventure!
6:Shooting Star mountain: Returning from Mario RPG, a snowy biome is the perfect fir for the shooting star-filled level that will mesmerize as well as challenge.
7:Bowser’s Kingdom: We’ve already established that Bowser lives in hell, so let’s keep it that way. It will still be refreshing because it is only the seventh level the gamer will play!
8:Bowser’s Castle: Here is where Mario and company will discover the cause of all the chaos. But not the solution. ADVENTURE AWAITS!
*Clearly something is going on1 The inhabitants of the Mushroom Kingdome have been having nightmares for a while, and it seems like the koopalings are not immune to this as well! What is going on? WHO CARES! It’s an excuse to have an adventure.
World two tomorrow…..

OfflineNeat idea and I look forward to hearing more about it.
I don’t have any suggestions yet, though I do have a couple of questions:
- How did you arrive at the number 7 for this game? Which titles are you including (and excluding) in the “main” Mario series?
- Are you proposing that this game would use realistically proportioned character models for Mario and friends?

OfflineSuper Mario Brothers
Super Mario Brothers 2
Super Mario Brothers 3
Super Mario World (SMB4)
NSMB Wii (SMB 5)
NSMB U (SMB 6)
In short, the direct line of console 2D Mario.
Also, HELL NO lol! I’m fine with the plumber’s ubiquitous design. Those are pictures meant to illustrate the surreal nature of the franchise and the Mushroom Kingdom.

OfflineI figured you’d only count the 2D Mario games
I think a non numerical name might be best, since a lot of folks consider the 3D Mario games to be just as canon as the 2D ones, though coming up with the proper name isn’t really the point here.
Great idea on varying the locales. A couple series Mario could draw inspiration from in this regard are Donkey Kong Country and Sonic.
DKC2 did a fantastic job of changing things up from the biome inspired levels of its predecessor by using pirate and amusement park themed levels. A twisted Koopa amusement park could feel fresh for Mario.
The Genesis era Sonic games showed a tremendous amount of level diversity from game to game. They also showed how fun sci-fi themed levels can be in a platformer. Technologically themed levels can add neat twists to the gameplay, such as switching the gravity from floor to ceiling. Perhaps visiting a Koopa munitions factory (they’ve got to manufacture bullet bills somewhere) could offer a neat change of pace.

OfflineA Munitions factory level is fucking brilliant! People tend to forget that just because it is nonsensical fantasy doesn’t mean that a world cannot benefit from continuity. The Bullet Bills and Bob Ombs, Tanks and Airships exist, thus they are made SOMEWHERE…

OfflineWorld 2: The Black Sea

Sailing into Uncharted Territory on Bowser’s tail, they finally arrive at the Black Sea, a stormy place that is difficult to navigate. It is soon shown that this is no ordinary water level, as Bowser’s Warfleet lies in wait for our heroes. While tropical bay-style water areas are a dime a dozen these days, no one has ever really shown us a Mario world set in the middle of the ocean, near their destination but far enough away that they will have to journey a bit further to reach it. The only “platforms to cross this thresh hold are Bowsers own ships, rocky isles, shipwrecks, and a lone lighthouse in the distance…
Ship Armada: Think World 8 in SMB 3, except on the high seas. Mario Must cross several of Bowsers Destroyers on the stormy sea, dodging cannonballs, bullet bills and wrenches.
Stormy Sea: No coral, obstacle,or walls! There is no bottom on this level so Mario must fight the currents and shifting waters, not to mention Torpedo Teds, in order to make it to the rocky isle in the distance!
Rocky Isle: RUN TO THE HILLS! Cross the rocky Isle while dodging deployed Koopa Troopas and an airship bombardment! The goal is to reach the shelter of that Old Shipwreck over yonder…
Old Shipwreck: Navigating the crumbling ruins of an ancient shipwreck is no easy task when you consider that more than Mario has taken shelter here…
Sinkhole: UH-OH! In attempting to cross the strait to the lighthouse, Mario has been engulfed by a Sinkhole! A verticle Swimming level, Mario must make it back up to the surface, going from pitch black depths where only fireballs and evil angler fish light the way, all the way up to brighter ocean where the more familiar cheep cheeps and bloopers call home.
Lighthouse Ruins: Climbing this ancient lighthouse is a risky proposition, but it is the only way to board the airship and get to the island. Beware of Mysterious Masked enemies, and prepare to battle the Fiery Source of the eerie light at the top of the lighthouse…
Airship: You know the drill: Navigate the Defenses, Dodge the artillery fire, and take out Lemmy Koopa. Now, does anybody know how to drive this thing?!?

OfflineSorry about the lack of updates, holiday and all!
LAst we checked in on Mario and company, they had just overtaken an airship but lacked the know-how to drive the thing! guess that means we’re in for a crash, huh? One of the coolest Ideas (at least I think it is) for changing the Mario game is inspired by board games (like many videogames) different boards have different rules in play, so why would Mario be any different. I would love to say that I am being creative with this concept, but in reality I am mining gaming’s past, Mario 3 in particular.
So what if the airship crashes randomly in one of the next four worlds? This would mean the following:
1:Each world has a unique Airship Crash Site level each it’s own. Let’s call it Level C
2:Since we are not taking the general “get harder as the game goes on” structure, we will need to alter this to make each world begin moderately easy, and get progressively harder the further you get into each world. By the time you get to optionals, it will be HARD.
3:This cannot be over-stated: YOU CANNOT GO BACK. One of the brilliant moves of Mario 3 is that you could only go forward. No more mining extra lives or powerups. No more star coin scavenger hunts. The game loses all sense of cohesion. Once you beat a stage in Super Mario Brothers 3, you could not replay it. You also couldn’t go BACKWARDS to prior worlds. You could only go forward. Mario should be a journey again.
I will update later today.

OfflineWorld 3: The Waste Lands
No more Egyptian deserts! Let’s explore the desolate waste of the Big Empty, which is a wasteland full of danger and wonder! The only life-signs are the forces of the Koopa king as his Tank Brigade patrols the expanse. On foot this desert is difficult terrain, from a cracked and canyon-like Dry Lake to a toxic desert that Mario must navigate in under a minute! After finally catching up to Wendy Koopa, will Mario be happy just to have a key to Bowser’s castle? or will he explore a little deeper and discover a desert lost-and found populated by a certain evil rodent?
C: If you happen to crash here you may notice that you created one hell of a sandstorm! Keep moving and try to navigate this desert maze the best you can, and youmay get out before the timer runs out!
1:Dry Lake: A deep dry Lake with even deeper cracks makes for some tricky platforming, since there are crevices everywhere1 This will force you to hop across the entire expanse!
2:Piranha Plant Boneyard: An eerie white-sanded boneyard that is filled with Pokeys, Piranha Plants, and bony Enemies!
3:Desert Fortress: The checkpoint for the Koopa troops, they guard this entrance while the tank brigade scours the desert for the things Bowser is looking for.
4:Starry Salt Flats: White Sand gives way to a mirror-like salt flat that reflects the stars overhead! A wonder to behold!
5:Quicksand Desert: Watch your step here! Quicksand and a pesky moon Hope to be the death of Mario and company here.
6:Toxic Mile: This toxic desert features red sand and geysers venting sulfur fumes. No plumber has ever crossed this toxic mile and lived to tell about it: ONE MINUTE MARIO!
7:Tank Brigade: Navigate the tanks, avoid the artillery, and take Wendy Koopa out to get her key and a way out of this desert. Or drive on… there seems to be some sort of scrapyard in the distance…..
8: Scrapyard: More Masked enemies show the beginning of a pattern, and a climactic showdown with a classic rodent foe should have you thinking at this point in this optional lost-and found of the ages!
