As many of you know I just recently got back into gaming after spending a couple of console Generations in exilelaugh

While I still do not see anything near the fun of the 16-bit era, there are some great games that did come out this generation.  Since the game industry is ending the party as early as next year I thought that we could take the time to honor some of our favorite experiences.  Here are the ones good enough to pry me off my SNES!!

My top ten console experiences of the seventh generation.  (In no particular order)

1.Demon/Dark Souls:  These games just scream Legend of Zelda to me!  Emphasis on story and world is there IF YOU WANT IT but not shoved down your throats, you are playing immediately, you are free to choose your path, and you live and die by your combat skills.  I have been waiting for a game like this to come around again since ALTTP and Terranigma!  Nothing more fun than to choose a sword-and-shield/bow/bomb Wanderer and name him Link!!!!!smile  I bought a PS3 just to experience these masterworks!

2.Rock Band (The Music Platform):  Of all the games on this list, this is the one that sapped the most money out of my pocket!  I cannot think of a single game that my family, friends and I devoured more of!  So much fun in a single disc, and music for everyones tastes make this a winner in my book!

3.XenoBlade Chronicles:  The return of the JRPG.  Dont look at the pathetic corpse that is Squenix, look to MonolithSoft for your RPG needs!  I cannot place it but for soem reason this game just feels like the second coming to me!  Its as if it comes from soem alternate tiemline where RPGs actually EVOLVED as games instead of focusing on NARRATIVE and CINEMATICS.  The more you play the more you appreciate.

4.WiiSports and WiiSports Resort:  The game that created millions of gamers and single-handedly grew the market AND created the casual myth.  What a mouthful!  I still pop these in to experience the simplistic joy that gaming can be.

5:NSMB Wii:  I would not own a Wii if not for this game!  I WAITED 18 YEARS FOR THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!madfrustratedbad-dayragingwtftwitch.  Despite this insane wait, it delivered, and Mario Mania was reborn a second time before my eyes!  DO NOT MAKE ME WAIT THIS LONG AGAIN, PLEASE!!

6.  The RockSteady Batman Games:  If Dark Souls is the new Zelda, then Arkham city is my new Metroid!  These games are just an epiphany!  It combines the exploration of a fascinating world with the tight gameplay I love to brag about to my friends!  A triumph!

7.BioShock (1, and MAYBE INFINITE):  I am often hard on games that focus on narrative, but if any game on this list is an example of arrative done right, it is Bioshock!  The way the story uses the player is an absolute masterpiece of storytelling!  It doesnt hurt that the game is polished as well.  If you have yet to visit rapture I cannot think of a better time!

8.Diablo 3:  I am in love!  This is our modern day gauntlet.

9.Starcraft 2:  2 Blizzard Games!  Imagine that…

10.Have to get back to everyone on that one!!!

How about everyone else?

Ill just mention a few at the top of my head in no particular order. GTA 4, Skyrim, Mass Effect, Uncharted, Fallout, LA Noire and Mafia 2. They are all on the ps3, or multiplatform, since thats the only current gen console i own.

Needless to say, i like storydriven games, preferably with plenty of freedom of movement in a sandbox enviroment, but story comes first.

Hmm, I think some of the best games of the current generation are the Call of Duty games. It’s because of the multiplayer/chat aspect that makes these games so strong in my opinion. What other game can you gather 5 other friends/teammates and work together as a cohesive unit to take down an opposing force and have tons of fun doing so? Controls are almost perfect, graphics are tight.

I’ve tried Battlefield 3, Halo, and other team based shooters, but nothing comes close to the funfactor I get when playing Call of Duty, especially with people who I know and can communicate well with.

Another standout is Batman Arkham Asylum. I playing through this game currently, and I think this is perhaps the best Batman game ever. This is the first game where I truly feel I am Batman and am in his world.

How can you even stand CoD’s player base though? Ive pretty much stopped playing games like MMO’s or online shooters. Kids with no manners who taunt and harass you has ruined the fun, and they are always there, in numbers.. That said, as long as you have fun it doesnt really matter i suppose.

I’m with Grimm on this one!surprised

When it comes to games like COD, these obnoxious kids turn me off from the online experience.  That Said, I DO love me some  local multiplayer on the COD games!

Well, at first the ranting kids and others who talk a lot of trash came at a shock, then a bit of annoyance. But after some time, I gotten used to it.

The secret though is this: Get in a team with your friends or clan. That way, you know everyone on your team is cool and you can just mute the other team if you want. No problems then!

Nothing beats a team based objective games like COD. It’s just so addicting!

Now on the other hand, I find it amusing when idiots trash talk each other. It’s like my Sunday funny papers!

Ive never found people’s true nature (yes, the REAL person behind his/her supposed anonymity online) even mildly amusing. I am aware that you can mute people in most online games with voice chat these days, but that doesnt help since you do hear their abuse before you know who to mute.

I can apriciate the team play and cooperative aspect of it, but i prefer to simply cooperate in games, and not compete against others. I just have no ambition to be “the best”, but just to enjoy myself. And sadly, if you dont have that ambition, no team or clan will want you, because they feel you dont “contribute” as much as you should. I played many MMO’s during 15 years on and off, and it always comes down to that stuff in the end.

So whilst i have no problem with you liking these games for whatever reason, i cant share your enthusiasm for FPS.

It is just more proof of the “hardcore gamer” ruining the fun for everyone…

That is why I love shooters, but only when I get enough together for a LAN party or whatnot.

As Grimm said, gaming should be fun, not a second job.

I consider myself a “hardcore gamer”, its my main consistant hobby. Im anything but a casual gamer. im just not in it to be the top man on the charts.

Let me restate that.  I do not believe in Segmenting newer or returning gamers such as myself into some Casual Ghetto.

I see all the time where they do this.  Try this:  Anytime you see the word casual in an article, remove it and insert “Stupid”.  Then you will be seeing what this industry feels about “us”

Casual and hardcore are two terms that I wish would go away.  It is why I always put them in quotations.  I bergan as a “Casual”.  My first games were Baseball and ExciteBike, Followed by Donkey Kong Super Mario Bros and Zelda.  As I found more games that intereted me I began to become “hardcore”.  After the N64 era I stopped altogether.

CSo-called “Casuals are just budding gamers that need a push to become “hardcore”.  In that the industry has failed them.  I see many gamers who stopped at the NES, SNES, only to be brought back into the fold again with the Wii.

Now I look for these gamers to become disinterested again due to the current direction.  I doubt Wii-purchasers will be interested in the WiiU.  The enemy is Disinterest.  Always has been.  look at how Hollywood has been able to turn their industry around oncw they realized this.

I dont substitute the word stupid with casual. When i say casual, i mean casual. As for labels, i dont like them either. But since people love labeling eachother, im pretty much forced to use them to describe my gaming dedication level. As for the industry itself, i, bluntly put, dont give a shit what they think of me. I take part of the games i find interesting. Games i dont, i simply dont play.

As for causal gamers needing to be pushed into becoming hardcore, i disagree. People have different levels of interest in hobbies, and that does not have to change for any reason what so ever.

Hollywood, schmollywood…. I dont really care what goes on there. The best films are never made in/by hollywood.

For me in no particular order…

1.  The “Uncharted” Trilogy on PS3

2. Blue Dragon

3. Xenoblade Chronicles

4. “Mass Effect” Trilogy (PS3) except the 1st on 360

5. Skyrim

6. “Dead Space” series-Still scares the sh#t out of me with the lights off!! LOL!!

7. Donkey Kong Country Returns

8. Valkyria Chronicles

9. Lost Odyssey

10. COD series But I gotta be honest I agree with Grimm & Mongunzoo on this one about the multiplayer. The online community for this series SUCKS!! I can see if you have a ton of the same friends playing but in general most of the time I have tried to get into the multiplayer aspect of the FPS’s the more I get frustrated with the social aspect of it. I do enjoy online co-op for several games though. I enjoy the big action set pieces for the COD series though. I like just playing through it and blowing sh#t up by myself mostly.

Another sad part is the lack of awesome RPG’s for this generation. They’re out there but many aren’t that great. Square really flubbed FF XIII and to be honest they haven’t made a great game since the PS2 days. Funny that the other RPG’s on my list are pretty much made by former Squaresoft employees…maybe that explains alot. The Playstation brand used to be such a power house for JRPG’s too. How things have changed. Still looking forward to The Last Story and Pandoras Tower for Wii though.

Not a fanboy, just a gamer...every system has its gems!!

I didnt think you use these terms, I’m just saying what THEY Think of me.  I would probably be labeled a casual or Nongamer.

Most gamers are exactly like what you said.  They play what they enjoy.

And as for pushing  gamers you do not have to.  But if you do not want to do that then Do not state that gaming is mainstream.  Im not sasying you do, but this industry loves to pretend it is.  If they have no interest in making mainstream games then why pretend?

I wouldnt say there is a lack of awesome RPG’s.. You have quite a few of those. Now if you actually mean j-rpg’s then yes, i can see that more easily. But then again, i think the golden age for j-rpg’s being the 16bit era. I have not played many j-rpg’s since the mid 90’s.. They lost much of their apeal to me when they went 3d…

The Treyarch COD’s – I like them a lot better than Infinity Ward’s COD’s simply due to the fact that the Treyarch COD’s have Zombie modes while the latter doesn’t. At least MW3 has a generic survival mode.

Left 4 Dead 2 – The 1st L4D game was a bit sparse in terms of content, but the sequel brings in melee weapons and 3 more infected as well as more throwable and normal weapons. You can even replay the L4D1 campaigns with the additions brought over from 2.

NSMB Wii – The 1st 2D Mario to be released on a home console in over a decade? FUCK. YES.

Wii Sports – Classic NES-style action brought over to the Wii! Who could ask for more?

Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum – What the 3rd gen games should have been in the 1st place. Probably the best JRPG(s) this gen, bar none. It’s practically digital cocaine.

Pokemon Heartgold/SoulSilver – Kick-ass remakes of Pokemon G/S, now with 32-bit graphics!

Samurai Warriors 3 – I don’t understand why people hate this game so much. It’s probably my favorite current-gen beat em’ up.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who likes the Call of Duty games around here. Until my recent rekindling for retro gaming, that was all I really played the past few years.
