OfflineOld news for those in the know, but no topic yet.
china has lifted it’s long-time console ban, thus warming up a cold market for publishers and console makers to market and distribute in.
I don’t know how taken the Chinese are with console gaming, but any new markets are good news for an industry starved of customers.
Thoughts?

This will be a game changer in the console business and may keep consoles relevant for a while longer as the market gradually shifts to PC / tablet / cell phone gaming / digital-only gaming.
There’s the market growth you’ve been looking for! With a middle-class population that is half a BILLION strong (and growing) this opens up a ton of new potential customers.
I really think that this is Nintendo’s market to lose at this point. A release of the Wii at a low price would be a huge seller. I believe Nintendo had some limited success in the past releasing a watered-down N64 in China in the past (I forget what it’s called), so hopefully they can apply what they’ve learned about the Chinese market to seize this opportunity.
PS3 and perhaps even Xbox will have some success with high-end customers, but for China’s growing middle class it will be all about getting a cheap, reasonably priced console.
To end things on a negative note, piracy will be a huge concern. Still gaining 500 million potential customers has to be considered a good thing.
Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown

OfflineAbsolutely. The only thing is as you said, it MUST BE CHEAP. The Wii would sell terrific there. Xbox360 has had massive success thanks to Minecraft, and Minecraft will also be coming To Vita and VitaTV(perfect for the new Chinese market!!!!!)
I am considering an investment in Sony. The games division looks solid and the stock is currently junk. Now if onkly they could sort out their other divisions…
One concern that may brunt this impact is China’s current ongoing economic instability. It was recently revealed that they have been fudging their numbers, and it is no secret that china is no longer the cheap manufacturing Shangri-La it once was, as companies begin to close the Chinese factories and build in cheaper and more lucrative nations. (Vietnam, Ethiopia, Mariana Islands ect.)
This is causing tension as the interior people (who are generally poor as they have no access to world trade as the coastal populations and river valley folk do) are having problems finding employment. This is also effecting the lower and middle-class coastal populations as well.
China is busy consolidating their coal companies and shipping sector in an effort to keep the clock turning, but if China falls to instability, games will be the last thing on peoples minds, since we are likely looking at the aftermath of another uprising followed by brutal government crackdown.
Hopefully years away….
