I bought the Wii U in November, but haven’t played it until New Year’s Eve. I gotta say I’m very impressed by the console. I’m loving the gampad it came with. It was amusing just setting the the system with the pad. I felt like a little kid again. laugh

My system came with Nintendoland and myself, my sister and my nieces and nephews were playing it. Man, it was a lot of fun! I kept giggling like a little boy when I was playing many of the attractions, especially the Luigi’s Mansion one. The gamepad really did add something to the gamplay and I’m so glad Nintendo decided to use it as their next controller.

I can’t get over how much fun I had with it and my sister, who is a Sony girl, had to admit the gamepad and Nintendoland was pretty fun.

I’m telling you, if Nintendo and 3rd party developers can consistently utilize that gamepad with innovation in mind, the experience will be tough to outclass.

Anybody else have initial impressions they would like to share about this system?

NSMB U is great, and I had fun with a few of the Nintendoland attractions. The gamepad, like the Wiimote has massive potential, which IF the Wiimote is any indication, will probably be squandered. But imagine a Wii sports U where the Gamepad player could be the referree, or an Ice climbers that utilizes the Gamepad player as NATURE HERSELF, drawing up gusts of wind or avalanches to doom the climbers? Imagine a Zelda where you no longer have to pause the action to equip items, or a Metroid (NOT OTHER M-LIKE) with a permanent Map Screen and scanner that updates with information on enemies and environments you come across?

The possibilities are there, but it is up to Nintendo to sell them to the consumer. Nintendo has to find a way to make the Gamepad do what customers want it to do, not expect customers to do what Nintendo wants them to do. This is the perspective that is crippling Nintendo.

Not that WiiU is alone this gen. I am haring reports from across the nation that Xbox One and PS4 sales are going flat after the holiday. In my town I can literally walk into any store and find one.

The Game industry will be shocked, though I am not… Still, I will wait until March’s numbers to tell my friends in the industry “I told you so”.

Exploring the New World on Nintendo Switch. Currently Playing: Zelda BOTW, Octopath Traveler, Sonic Mania, Yoku's Island Express, Mega Man 11. Currently Watching: Marble Hornets, Luther, Black Mirror, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 5. Currently Reading: Influence by Robert Cialdini.

The last several times I’ve been in Target I’ve tried out their demo Wii U setup (I don’t care if I look silly – I want to check out the new games!)

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed was so good it made me buy the 2DS and 3DS version of the game (which is identical to the Wii U version), and I LOVE it. From my impression of the Wii U demo though, it didn’t utilize the GamePad that much ( it was just like the bottom screen of the DS – showing your position on the track).

Then I tried Sonic Lost World, Rayman Legends, and Super Mario Bros U demos

They turned Sonic Lost World into Super Mario Galaxy, I’m glad I stopped after one level because I would’ve got vertigo (hard to control speedy Sonic on moving 3D platforms). The graphics were gorgeous though. Didn’t really notice any GamePad use.

Super Mario Bros U was pretty sad – the backgrounds looked cheap, like right out of Angry Birds. They reminded me of the Giant 4th world in SMB3, but the way they defined the background shapes made it look Angry Birds-y. They also made Mario all squat and fat, which looks pretty bad when you compare how he looked in Super Smash Brawl. It used the GamePad minimally, although in a logical fashion (find stuff underground, see more coin boxes)

Rayman Legends was the most annoying, maybe because I haven’t played a Rayman game yet and am not sure about the gameplay, but I’ve heard good things and want to try the Wii Origins game. Anyhow, you start off as one character and then almost immediately they make you switch to another – where you’re having to give yourself neck-strain looking from the GamePad to the screen to control the second character – annoying as all hell. Makes me realize how spoiled I am with the tag team system in Donkey Kong Country.

Maybe it’s just me, still not used to checking a second screen on DS and whatnot, because the little girl playing Super Mario U after me was solely looking at the GamePad and she was doing fine.

It’s certainly a different wave of gaming.

Keep in mind, these are just my initial responses to demos I played.

Masamune, how were you all playing the games together? Did one of you have the GamePad while the others had Wiimotes? Does the WiiU support multiple GamePads? (that sounds expensive…)

No the Wii U doesn’t support two gamepads unfortunately. I don’t think Nintendo made the system powerful enough to handle two gamepads adequately.

In Nintendoland, one person has the gamepad and the others use wiimotes, or we would all take turns using the gamepad in the one player games. Tons of fun! Try Nintendoland if you can!

I’m thinking of buying a Wii U this week. I’d go for the Windwaker HD bundle and buy Mario 3D World. NSMB U and DK Tropical Freeze also seem very nice but I think I’ll wait a bit because I bought their Wii prequel last summer and haven’t played them completly yet.

Would anyone advise me not to go with the games I mentioned?

I’ve never completed Windwaker on the gamecube and the HD remake seems gorgeous.

How is Mario 3D World’s multiplayer? Is it enjoyable?

Also thinking of getting a Wii U, though not at present. I’m happy to let them come down in price. With it I’d like to get NSLB U.

LoZ: The Windwaker is a great game, one of my favourites for the GameCube. Every time I get the old ‘Cube out I give it a play through. I know a lot of people don’t like the sailing part but I love exploring the island’s and archipelago’s. I also appreciate the cel-shaded art style they went with, for me it captures the character of the world and it’s inhabitants perfectly.

Get those games you mentioned since they are some of the best ones the system has to offer. Mario 3D World multiplayer is fun. It’s like playing Super Mario Bros. 3 but with 4 player simultaneous play.

I’ve really enjoyed playing Wind Waker HD with the gamepad. Having the inventory and maps on the second screen can be very useful. I haven’t really played Super Mario 3D World and Nintendo Land yet but they seem very fun too. Right now I’m very tempted to get Earthbound on the eShop as I don’t feel like spending over $200 on a cartridge.

Anyways.. I have to say I’m quite surprised about the gamepad. I thought it would feel weird and bulky but it’s actually quite nice! So far I’m not regretting my purchase and the game line-up for 2014 seems incredible!

I think if naysayers of the Wii U gave it 2 solid hours of play, many of them would change their mind about the system and gamepad.

Nintendo’s advertising certainly doesn’t help though. mad
