Recently, I’ve been considering getting one from a friend. Any good games worth checking out? What do you guys think of the system?

Also, stupid question, but how do you play Nights? I’ve seen footage of that game & it looks pretty confusing.

I’m culling from my knowledge of video game history instead of firsthand experience, but my impression is that the Saturn was a good console that made too many mistakes. I recommend “Panzer Dragoon”, “Mega Man X4”, “Mega Man 8”, “Nights Into Dreams”, “Virtua Fighter”, and “Sonic 3D Blast” (the most underrated classic Sonic game). It’s not much, but it’s a start.

“Nights Into Dreams” is a really high-concept game that does look confusing at first. When you’re flying around a level as Nights, you travel in one of four predetermined circuits while traveling through hoops and collecting blue spheres. You collect 20 of them to destroy these Metroid-looking things called Ideya Cages, and each circuit is finished when you destroy them and travel back to the gazebo at the starting point. You can pass the starting point and keep going around the current circuit, but if the time limit runs out you lose Nights and you’ll have to return to the gazebo anyway.

I myself was considering getting a Saturn but I will wait and get rid of some unwanted gear first otherwise stuff will be everywhere.

I have little experience of it myself though I’m lead to believe the Saturn is a 2d powerhouse in an age of 3d popularity.

Games I have been recommended are Skeleton Warriors, Magic Carpet, Panzer Dragoon, Guardian Heroes and Shining Force.

It can be an expensive system to get games for right now. Anyone looking to start collecting games for that system should be prepared for that.

Golden Axe: The Duel looks fairly nice. A 2D fighter in the Golden Axe world does appeal to me. Anyone played it?

I’d recommend skipping III; it’s very bland.

On topic, I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve played a Saturn.  Being a huge SEGA fan, I’d love to own one but can’t see myself forking over the cash for the high prices its best games command.

Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown

I now have a Saturn! Bought one for a great price not long ago and plan to really make a go of this system and it’s incredible software library. I intend to acquire games from all regions, like I have done with the SNES. Already bought some and have several games lined up but as you can imagine, high demand titles are expensive so I will have to be patient.

That sounds awesome Ghost. Back when the Saturn came out, I was waiting for it to be great before I took the plunge. But it seemed like the Playstation had more volume of games and more quality games, so I went with that instead.

I don’t know if I will get on the bandwagon at this point; I’m more eyeing the Turbo Duo right now. smile

Well it was kind of a disappointment overall when it came to 3D games and lacked some of the better third party support of that generation, and it’s expensive to collect for, but the 2D games library is pretty great. Especially for shoot em ups.

Great games to get/play in emulation:

Nights into Dreams

Panzer Dragoon Zwei

Panzer Dragoon Saga

Sega Rally

Shining Force III (scenarios 2-3 have been fan translated)

Virtua Fighter 2 or Fighters Megamix, Dead or Alive

Galactic Attack (Layer Section), Cotton Boomerang, Batsugun, Radiant Silvergun, Battle Garegga, Darius Gaiden, Soukyugurentai, Hyper Duel, Strikers 1945 II, Thunder Force V, Sexy Parodius, DoDonPachi, Twinkle Star Sprites, Gradius and Twinbee Deluxe Packs

Dragon Force and Dragon Force II (fan translated)

Street Fighter Alpha 2 or 3, Marvel Vs Street Fighter, Samurai Shodown III or IV, Vampire Savior

Saturn Bomberman

PowerSlave/Exhumed

Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, Baku Baku Animal, Puyo Puyo Sun

Metal Slug, Elevator Action Returns, Mega Man 8 and MMX4

Bulk Slash, Burning Rangers

Guardian Heroes (better on XBLA though), Dungeons and Dragons Collection, Pu Li Ru La, Princess Crown, Die Hard Arcade (Dynamite Deka)

Gungriffon 1 or 2

Silhouette Mirage, Assault Suits Leynos 2, Psychic Killer Taromaru

Keio Flying Squadron 2, Rayman, Bubble Symphony, Liquid Kids

Magic Knight Rayearth

Purikura Daisakusen

Shining the Holy Ark

Virtua Cop 1-2

Real Bout Special, X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Kings of Fighters ’97, Astra Superstars

Decathlete, Sega Worldwide Soccer ’98

Daytona USA or CE (JP ver.)

I started looking at the prices of games I have mild interest in, and I almost went into shock. Might not be getting into Saturn anytime soon. shrugs

Saturn games are very expensive now. Don’t get me wrong, its not off limits. But for those of us who have to have a certain title or rarity then it becomes a difficult choice of whether to buy or hold off.

I managed to get a few of my wanted games for a decent price overall. Sonic Council, Strikers, Golden Axe, SF Collection, Pop n Twinbee, Parodius, Power Drift etc. Some that I’d still like are difficult to justify the purchase price.

Nice, Power Drift seems like a good port.
