Topic RSSI often think of the lost potential of the N64. It had a few gems, but overall it was a disappointment in my book in comparison to Nintendo’s other console systems.
I think one of the greatest mistakes Nintendo made was making the N64 a cart based system. Carts are more expensive to produce than CDs are, hold less space, and the mid ninties was a time where the gaming industry was transitioning over to what I believe are a better format. Thus it didn’t get the 3rd party support that might of had if the system was CD based.
What do others think?

OfflineI think Nintendo developed a bad reputation in the late 90s and that had more to do with it than the actual cd format.. Plus, the new hot system was not the N64, it was the playstation.

OfflineNintendo needed to learn to do learn what gamers valued. And it was not INSANE controllers and no 2D gameplay.
As I have said before, N would have been better off just supporting the SNES more.

What did Nintendo do in the late 90’s to cause them to have a bad reputation? I don’t remember anything offensive on their part, except maybe some bad decisions with their consoles…

OfflineWell one thing is trying to once again create monopoly from a cooperation with another company, which likely cost them that monopoly actually.. Ive never liked Nintendo’s business practices. I think you can see other things and choices they made that cost them support of both end consumers and third party developers.

OfflinePursuing the games that THEY wanted to make instead of doing what their customers wanted.
Choosing formats unkind to third parties and not supporting them with the proper development tools.
Integrated Hardware and software (limiting custoemr CHOICE)
these are just a few…

OfflineThey were developing the Disk Drive, an add-on that would attach to the bottom of the console. I know they were developing Ura Zelda for it, a patch for OoT that was ultimately abandoned. They should’ve implemented the Disk Drive and introduced an alternative controller for the N64’s three-pronged thing. I think it would look something like the GCN controller. They could have had much more success with the N64 being disk-based, but alas, we’ll never know.
